When I woke up the next morning I felt like crap, Cory was gone and there was silence until I heard my mother's car start. Of course to ignore the fact that your daughter ran away, go to work. I will say it again, Mother Of The Year.
The room around felt foreign without Emma's thousands of clothes and stuff scattered all over, I missed the sound of her soft little snores. My head began to ache and I reached up to rub my temples when the door creaked open.
"Jenna sweetie are you up?"
"Yeah dad what time is it?"
He looked at his watch and said, "Quarter to ten, you know you don't have to got to school today."
"I didn't plan on going."
A heavy sigh fell from his lips, "Jenna I know it's hard, Emma being gone and all but you don't have to act this way."
I scoffed and glared at him, "Act what way? Rational? Because all you guys have done is act as if nothing happened, mom left to work as if nothing happened. And then I get yelled out for telling the police the truth!"
"Jenna you told the cops your mother hit your sister."
"Because she did dad!"
"Jenna maybe Emma exaggerated a..." I leaped up.
"Don't you try that on me dad!! I watched her do it!! Why do you defend her knowing what a terrible person she is!?" I screamed and he just frowned.
“I'm sorry you feel that way Jenna but I noticed ever since September I've seen you change, you went from the shy girl who always hid behind Emma for everything. To the strongest one of the family, but honey if you keep up this tough person act you're only going to make it worse and drive yourself insane."
“Well maybe if you were the dad you should be who takes care of us and defended us against our witch of a mother maybe I wouldn't have to be this way. And just maybe Emma would still be here!!" The minute I said it I felt guilty, the look of utter dismay say on his face as he looked away avoiding my gaze.
“I'm sorry you feel that way Jenna. I have to go....I'm going down to the police station to help with the investigation. I'll be back."
I nodded and he shut the door, the door symbolized a wall that had been built over time and with what I just said the last fifty bricks were added. My world was crumbling, my sister was missing, and there was nothing I could do about it.
I reached for my phone and dialed the second number i knew by heart, three rings and nothing, “Come on answer."
I dialed again and nothing, it took five calls before they answered, “Hey Jenna, sorry we were getting lectured for some bull. What's up its almost lunch where are you and Emma?"
My heart clenched but I continued, “I need you to get over here now."
I guess he could hear the voice I made when I cried and instantly made an excuse to his teacher, “I'm on my way Jenna."
“Give me ten minutes." When he hung up my eyes watered feeling lovely once again, Where was everyone?
“Cory!" I yelled but no answer came back, he must have left too. It felt like forever and my body acted and my head hurt, but there was a knock at the window. I glanced up and saw a small hand reaching for the glass, “Emma....."
My body was propelled up and the window yanking it open, “Emma!!"
“No Jenna it's me, what did end sneak out again?" My smile dropped as Zack climbed through the window, I was happy he was here but I hoped he was Emma. He saw my face and the tears threatening to drop he yanked me into his arms, “Jenna what's wrong?"
“Did she and your mom get into another agreement?" He asked but the tears fell and I shook my head.
“Emma, she-she's gone."
He sat me down and looked me deep in the eyes, “What do you mean?"
“She ran away on Saturday..." his eyes widened as the years flyer down my face, tears formed in his eyes and his lip trembled.
“Gone Zack. She's gone." He watched me closely as I told him everything.
The words fell from my mouth and I threw myself into his arms and he gripped me tight as we both cried. He held me tight and that's exactly what I needed, with my terrible mother, my distant father, and my confused little brother no one had been there for me. But Zack was.
“Zack I just want her back."
“She'll come back Jenna, she loves you too much."
“Then why'd she leave me?" My voice trembled.
“Like you said she needs some time away."
He wiped away my tears as I leaned into his embrace, “I wish I could find her."
“Maybe you could, you know that cops nearly find missing kids."
“I know I've seen the statistics. But do you seriously think we could find her?"
“We're great as a team Jenna and if you really wanna find Emma I'll stand right by you, I wanna find her too." His words were sincere and I hugged him.
“Thank you Zack, you're my best friend." I whispered, but he mumbled something I couldn't hear something having to do with 'more'.
“let's start of small let's not go back into your Nancy Drew faze again." He grinned making me smile a little.
“I wanted to be a detective I was eight stop judging me." I giggled but remembered ends and dropped the smile, I reached for the most recent picture of me and Emma and handed it to Zack.
“Here put this is the photo copier, and let's make some flyers, posted, set up a webpage dedicated to finding Emma." I was determined to find my sister, Zack nodded and went over to my printer. I pulled out markers, sharpies, and my laptop.
Zack made over a thousand chores of the prior and it took all day for us to write all our information on the papers, they all said the same thing:
Emma Sophia Dexter
Last seen in the night of November 11th, if you see this girl please contact the number below.
Jenna Dexter or Zack Fidel at 284-850-6360
I had set up a Facebook page for her too, it seems as if weird had gotten pout about Emma and a ton of people followed the page, messaged me their apologies, or worse the terrible people that didn't like her said 'Its about time that girl left', 'Looks like life got too hard for the little bitch', or worse if all 'She deserves to turn up dead in a ditch'.
That one comment made my stomach lurch and I rushed to the window and threw up the little bit of food Zack had gotten me to eat. People were sick and just awful, Emma didn't deserve that noone did. We reported the people and deleted the messages, but with every hour more and more people followed and messages me. It became overwhelming and I just gave up, during the country I pulled my blanket over my head and cried.
“Jenna Pryor are just doing that because they're jerks who have no lives."
I shook my head, “It's not just that, I don't want anyone sympathy, no one needs to say they're sorry. All they need to do is just help me find her."
"Some people just don't know what it's like to want to be left alone, especially when something like this happens."
"They need to get a hint." I whispered and he smiled, getting off the ground he sat on the edge of my bed and rubbed my back softly.
"It'll get better Jenna I promise you."
The headache began to develop again making me want to sleep but I looked at him taking in his features and cute boyish face, "When Zack? When?"
"Soon Jenna, sooner than you think."
I looked back up at his face and leaned up kissing his cheek, "Thanks for saving me today Zack."
He sat back looking me in the eyes stunned for a minute until he said, "You're welcome, from now on call me Zack the hero." He grinned and I giggled, "Go to sleep it's late and you're tired."
"What about you?"
He scooted up farther on my bed, laid his head on my stomach, and left his legs hanging off the side, "I'm pretty comfortable here."
"Don't you have school tomorrow?"
"I'm not going to school." I said.
"Well neither am I." I smiled and ruffled his hair, we laid like that all night in silence because we didn't need words we just knew that all we needed was each other. And together we were going to find me sister.
