Our happy reunion was the best part of that day.
Because when we pulled away Tony and Zack were standing in the doorway, our parents had already seen them. My dad stood up already on his way to Tony, "You get out of my house you street rat you have no right to be here..." he stopped mid sentence when Emma stepped in between them.
"Dad you will not talk that way about him and he has every right to be here. If you won't allow him to be here I'll leave right with him." She threatened.
I looked at Zack my eyes telling him to do something but we were both silent and frozen. My father looked aghast, but slowly he backed away and sat back down beside my mother who hadn't moved since we entered the house. Quietly we all sat down on the long sofa opposite my parents, Zack and Tony on the ends, me and Emma right next to them, and Cory squashed in between us. Emma gripped my hand and I held hers back tight, I gulped the large bulge in my throat and slowly opened my mouth.
"Someone say something."
I sighed, "Okay I brought Emma home for the benefit of all of us, and all you guys are gonna do is sit there?"
"I knew this was a bad idea" Emma whispered, "I came back to fix what I did."
"What you did was leave and never come back, you never called or even tried to tell us you were okay Emma! Jesus Christ we thought you were dead!" Mum screamed
"Don't you think I know that Mother!? It hurt me inside knowing what I did and I still have this pain in my heart just at the thought of how I left." Emma shouted back.
"Then why did you leave Emma? That's all I want to know."
She looked at me and I nodded, her eyes went to Cory, "Little man please don't hate me I don't want you to think lowly of me, but I left for one reason and one reason only" she took a deep breath, "Mum and Dad were going to send me to a boarding school across the country."
His eyes widened, "What why!?"
"Your sister did a terrible thing Cory, please go to your room until...." Emma cut my dad off.
"I had sex Cory." She deadpanned and I giggled, Zack snickered and Tony turned crimson red, "Jenna it's not funny."
I giggled and she smiled, this made my mother furious, "This is no laughing matter Emma you did something you should have waited to do you weren't ready and..."
"Because I wasn't ready you were going to send me across the country!? That is such a good alternative mother, just send me and my problems away. You didn't stop and think maybe I have feelings or maybe that we could have worked it out together?"
"Emma you weren't ready."
She laughed, "You're right dad I wasn't ready but you know I took responsibility, I grew up and took responsibility just like you guys never thought I would."
Cory looked completely lost, "What are you guys talking about?"
We all looked at him but said nothing Emma looked at me and nodded toward the door, we stood up and the boys followed. My parents said nothing as we walked out the door.
She crossed her arms over her chest and sighed, "Well that went..."
"Interestingly?" Tony asked.
"Awkward." Zack laughed.
"Neither I don't even have a word for it" her eyes found mine, "Jenna call Andi."
I pulled out my phone and dialed Andi's number, "Hey I'm so glad you called we were actually about to come over, we're down the street be there in a second."
She hung up and I looked at them, "She's coming."
The wait didn't take long before silver Murano came down the street and she parked right in the driveway, Emma walked over and pulled Emery from the car and hugged her.
"Emms maybe we should..."
"No we have to do this, Andi please stay here if anything I'll bring her back to you and I want you to drive back home immediately okay?" Emma said and Andi nodded. We slowly walked back into the house but me and Zack went first, my family looked up at me and I looked at Tony.
He stepped up and Emma behind him, "Cory this is why mum and dad wanted to send me away."
"Emma don't you..." But it was too late Emery was in full sight, Cory saw her his eyes trailing every inch of the baby. From her brown eyes, to her black hair, and her freckled face.
"Is she your baby Emma?" He asked.
With a nod Emma smiled, "Yeah Cory this is Emery, my daughter."
My eyes found my parents and this time it was my turn to be mad at them, "So because Emma got pregnant you threatened to send her away and take Emery if she didn't have an abortion?"
They looked shocked, "Jenna please this is a conversation to have at another time."
"Oh you mean when you can interrogate Emma alone, I don't think so mother dearest. You had no right to do that to Emma, now I understand why she left and I would have done the same thing if I were in her position. She came back to fix what happened, but it's hard enough without you being hard on her. Now we're going to go to our room, they're going to be staying with us until this mess becomes a family again. If you have any objections keep them to yourselves, and if you even think about threatening us or touching Emery in any way I will call the cops."
The look on their faces were looks I'd never seen before, the look of betrayal. I didn't care, I grabbed Emma's hand and the boys went to get the bags. Cory followed us back to the room but once we got to the door Emma froze, "What's wrong?"
"It's been a while I just.." She trailed off.
"It's okay I'm right here, it's not that bad in there it's just a little empty."
She nodded and we walked in, it was warm being that it was May but it was cozy. It's because Emma's back, a voice in my head said making me smile. Slowly she made her way around the room, from the side with my things on it to the empty white side. She put Emery down and ran her fingers across the dark brown dresser that once held all her makeup and accessories. The colors ranged from light colors to darks to medium colors, but now there lay nothing not even dust.
"I hate how empty this room is, why I left it this way. God I've missed this room and the softness of my bed, how quickly I would fall asleep and how comfortable I was." She whispered to herself.
"Maybe we can make it less empty."
She turned to me and put on a warm smile, she ruffled Cory's hair and sat on her bed. The sheets still there clean from when I had washed them last week, I washed those sheets and blankets just incase she ever came home I'm glad I did. The boys came into the room with all the bags and sat down beside us, Zack wrapped his arm around me and Tony grabbed Emma's hand.
"This day could have gone worse you guys, I'd say it went pretty good." Zack joked and we all laughed a little, Cory sat on the floor playing with Emery still taking in her appearance.
"Well it's only 4:49 and I know we don't wanna see those two again how about we order a pizza and watch some movies." I suggested.
"Can we get pepperoni?"
I laughed and pulled out the menu to Domino's and placed an order for a large pepperoni with bread sticks and cinnamon sticks. Cory brought his Xbox into our room and put on Netflix so we could get some movies, we were half an hour in on Movie 43 when the doorbell rang.
No one moved so I got up, "I'll get it." I walked quickly to the door before my parents could answer it but they were no where in sight, I paid the guys and took the pizza shutting the door with my foot when I heard voices.
".....don't you think I know that Daniel!?"
"Maybe we should tell them to leave."
"No!! It's been three years since she's been gone let's just at least let them stay for the time being."
"I don't like the thought of him in our house, and with her being back look at what's it's done to Jenna."
"She's always had that confidence."
"No she hasn't Shannon she's always been a wimp.."
"I'm not having this conversation with you Daniel I'm going to bed." I listened for something else but there was silence and then footsteps, my father appeared at the top of the stairs and saw me. I put my head down and walked back to my room silently.
"Hey Jenna took you long enough." Tony said taking the box, I sat down on my bed and Emma came over wrapping her arms around me.
I wiped away a tear, "Nothing I'm just happy you're home."
"I know that's not the reason, but I'm not going to push it" she smirked, "Not until later."
I smiled and she hugged me tighter, This is what I missed most.
