"Liam, calm down." We've already been on the plane for 5 hours, and Liam's still nervous.
"I'm fine." He said, while his leg was shaking faster than light.
"Then let go of Taylor's hand. I think you're hurting her."
Liam was gripping Taylor's hand. He insisted on sitting in the middle of us. I guess just so he feels more comfortable. "Oh. Sorry Taylor."
The pilot's voice came over the microphone thing. "We're about to land in Vancouver, Canada. If you are traveling further, please stay on the flight. Thank you everyone, and welcome to Canada."
Liam's grip on my hand got tighter. "Canada? Why'd she have to move to Canada? We could've saved so much money if she lived in New York. So much money."
"Liam, it was your idea to go see her."
"I know. And I don't regret it." He looked down at the ground and let go of my hand. "At least I think I don't."
"It's all gonna be okay."
"Are you sure this it Liam?"
"Yeah. I googled it."
"Wait I thought you said she knows you're coming."
"Liam?" Liam's mom answered the door in her pajamas. "How did you find me?"
She put her head in her hands. "I'm sorry I texted you. I should've called you." She looked up at me, and noticed I was holding Taylor.
"Um, mom can we come inside?" Liam wrapped his arm around my waist.
"No. Who's this?"
"Um, this is Nikki. She's...she's my fiancé."
Liam's mom's mouth dropped open.
"And this is our baby, Taylor." Liam pointed down at Taylor.
"Liam! This girl looks like she's 15! What were you thinking?!"
I couldn't help but join the conversation. "Ma'am, I'm 17."
She rolled her eyes. "Even better." She paused for a second and looked behind me and Liam. "Come in." She pushed both of our backs into her house.
"Mom's what wrong?" Liam wandered around the house like he was looking for something.
"Nothing, I just have gotten dressed yet. I don't want anyone to see me like this."
Liam nodded unsurely. "So how do you feel?" He sat down on the couch. Without thinking, I sat down too. Liam's mom gave me a sharp look as she sat across from me.
"I'm feeling fine. I hate being trapped in here though." She laughed. "These might be my last few months to live, and I'm not doing anything!"
"Mom, what do you want to do?"
"I've always wanted to go to Paris. And I've always wanted to meet Billy Joel. And I've always wanted grandchildren."
"Well..." Liam grabbed Taylor from me and handed her to his mom. "Here's one wish."
"Thank you." Liam and I both said at the same time.
"You know what Nikki?"
"Yes Mrs. Payne? " The anticipation was killing me.
"You can call me Karen." She smiled, and I smiled.
The rest of the time she had Taylor, she was bouncing her on her lap, trying to get her to laugh.....all things that make Taylor spit up.
"Oh shoot!" Karen stood up and held Taylor in the air as the spit up slid down her pajamas.
"Oh my goodness I'm sorry let me clean that up!" I handed Liam to Taylor and gave him the wet wipes. Karen started wiping herself off with a paper towel.
"Nikki I think there's some on the floor. Would you mind getting the mop? It's down the hall, first door on the left."
"Sure thing." I walked toward the hallway, admiring the pretty furniture in the living room. The whole hallway was covered in pictures of Liam and his sisters. He was so adorable. Still is. I smiled as I walked into the first room on the left. The whole room was filled with antiques. Everything from tea cups to baby dolls. Stuff like that always creeps me out. I carefully made my way to the mop. I quickly grabbed it and ran out of the room, making sure no dolls were following me. "Here I got it." I bent down and mopped up the spit up.
"Thanks Nikki." Karen laughed. "You can just leave the mop here when you're done."
Thank goodness. I just grinned and sat back down next to Liam.
"So Liam? How's the teacher thing going?" Karen raised her eyebrows.
"Um..it's good. I have a couple annoying students though." Liam laughed awkwardly.
"Are you in his class Nikki? Is that how you two met?"
"No." I could feel my insides tingling. "I used to be though."
"Oh. You moved up a grade?"
"Yep." I put on a fake smile.
"So..." Liam cut off the awkwardness. "Let's go see a movie!"
Karen smiled. "Let's go! My choice!"
We all laughed as we walked out the door. Even Taylor. Who I'm pretty sure has no idea what's going on.
