I backed up, not saying a word.
"Nikki. You don't have to be afraid. I promise you."
"You're in an orange jumpsuit for god's sakes!" I turned around and walked into JC Penney's, trying to erase him from my mind.
I walked straight to the swimsuit department without turning back. The nerve in him. How much more will it take to make him understand I never want to see him again? Sometimes I think it'll never end.
I picked out an black one piece with a small slit in the middle. I went up to the cash register to checkout. I was shocked to see a little boy that looked about 10 behind the counter.
"Um...Is your mommy here?" I looked around but didn't see anyone.
"Nope. Is this all you want?" The little boy looked at me, waiting for an answer. "My name is Mike by the way."
I nodded and handed him the cash. "So...how long is your shift?"
"9-5. I'm on a ramen noodle budget right now so..."
"Here you go. That'll look great on you. Have a nice day!" Mike waved goodbye to me as I walked away. The most interesting conversation I've had all day and it was with a 10 year old.
As I walked back into the food court to leave, I noticed all the prisoners were going outside to get back into the van. I walked quickly, not making eye contact with any of them. I went out to the parking lot and couldn't remember where I parked. Great. I hit the panic button on my keys and heard my car beeping from a few feet away. I walked towards it, passing an outrageous amount of orange jumpsuits. And the one closest to my car? Harry of course.
"Leaving already?" Harry's voice seemed tired.
"Yep. Nice seeing you, Harry." I didn't make eye contact with him. I just got in my car, shut the door, and drove off.
"I'm home Liam!"
"What did you get?"
"This." I held up my swimsuit for Liam to see.
"Whoah. That'll look amazing." He winked and kissed me.
"Napping. Don't worry, I finished packing for her."
"Your awesome." I laughed. "So is everything ready to go?"
"Yep. We can just go straight to the airport tomorrow." Liam smiled.
"Liam...why are we leaving so sudden? It seems like out of nowhere you just want to get out of here."
"You're right. I just want a break. The constant worrying and stress of being here is becoming too much. I think we all deserve this."
"I agree." I sat down next to Liam and we put on the TV. "I saw Harry today."
Liam turned around to me. "What?"
"The prisoners were doing community work at the mall."
"Did he talk to you? God, for his sake I hope he didn't."
"Yes or no. Did he talk to you?"
"That son of a-"
"Liam it's okay. He just told me hello. And he told me...that I don't have to be afraid."
"You don't believe him, do you?"
"No of course not!"
It was silent for a few seconds.
"You know I love you Liam. Let's just forget this happened and have fun on our trip. Okay?"
"Okay." He leaned over and kissed me on the cheek, only to be interrupted by Taylor's cry. "I'll go get her." Liam got up and went into the nursery. He came back in the living room with Taylor. "Looks like someone's really excited to go to Disney!"
Taylor laughed as she cuddled her stuffed Mickey close to her. "Awww." I laughed. I know this will be a trip she will never forget. One that us as a family will never forget.
