17. The Cave
“Wait, can we stop off somewhere before we get to the train station?” I quizzed into Niall’s ear, he lifted his right arm up and stared at the watch that was placed neatly around his wrist “I guess so, we got half an hour till the next train” Jumping off of his back, I placed my hand into his and dragged him in the direction of the sea front. Running along the beach I finally came across what I wanted to show Niall, tucked away at the end of one of the beaches was a neat cave we both sat inside staring at the green sea that lapped up the rocks and sand the rain drowning within it. The whole beach was deserted; the wind was harsh and made my cheeks numb. “My mum and I used to sit in here, talk about everything and everyone. It was our place. We’d come here every weekend and she’d tell me the same story about how there was this mermaid out there in that water awaiting her lover and how he never came, but when she stopped looking that’s when she found him” I smiled at the memory “That’s when she got cancer, we stopped coming here and instead I went to her hospital bedside and tell her the story. When she died, I spent countless hours here. It sort of became a second home it felt like a piece of her was always with me when I was here and the pain would leave me, like she was here comforting me” I was staring at the ground tears gathering in my eyes, when I looked up Niall was staring at the wall of the cave, where I had engraved the words ‘Mum, 1975 – 2010 R.I.P’ his thumb tracing over the words as if his was remembering them. “I can’t imagine what it’s like. To be so close to someone and have them taken from you. It’s fucking unfair” Niall hit the wall of the cave and I pulled him in hugging him “Niall it’s okay, it’s life. Nothing we can do to stop it. I don’t want your sympathy it happened a long time ago, I just wanted to bring you here because I now feel close to the two most amazing people I’ve known. She’d be happy that I chose to bring you here” I smiled looking up towards the sky.
I miss you so much mum, I wish you were here so I could talk to you and have you hold me in your arms and tell me it’s all going to be okay.
And just like that, Niall pulled me close, holding me in his arms whispering a sweet little lie “Everything’s going to be okay Lucy”. I smiled at his words and he caught my grin “What?” he laughed back “Nothing, let’s go we’re gonna be late” dragging him in the direction we came from I pulled him towards the train station and just in time for our train home.
