Ace of Blood

Alice has found a new kind of wonderland.
Jamie Cunning is just an ordinary girl. Sort of. Bearing the scars of a thousand painful memories, old an new, she found a strange set of friends in the abandoned and untended headstones of a nearby cemetery. But this girl who prefers the company of the dead to that of the living finds a shocking new life thrust upon her when she is shoved into a world of danger and death. The worst of all: it lurks just around the corner. The paperboy. The school bully. The neighbor. They may all be a part of it. Watch out, because Ace is always watching, and you never know how the cards will fall.

29. The Duty of a Rabbit

“Tomorrow night Ace is going to save Zes.”
The White Rabbit hadn’t been able to believe its good fortune when the news of the escape had landed oh-so-nicely in its lap.
Her mistress smiled and the Rabbit smiled with her. “What shall I do? What do you wish for?”
“Those things I wish for, Rabbit, are not yours to give.” The woman paused, and the Rabbit strained to hear her instructions as her voice dropped lower. “But you shall help me achieve them. I want you to take Tera here, to this corner, whether she is assigned to join you or not. I will handle the rest.”
The Rabbit nodded and backed away, already turning the task over in her mind, trying to discover a method of preforming it without revealing herself to the others.
Because the Rabbit would do it, whether she wanted to or not, whether she saw herself in Tera – respected the innocence the girl had clung to – or not. She had been given a task, and the White Rabbit always succeeded.
