Ace of Blood

Alice has found a new kind of wonderland.
Jamie Cunning is just an ordinary girl. Sort of. Bearing the scars of a thousand painful memories, old an new, she found a strange set of friends in the abandoned and untended headstones of a nearby cemetery. But this girl who prefers the company of the dead to that of the living finds a shocking new life thrust upon her when she is shoved into a world of danger and death. The worst of all: it lurks just around the corner. The paperboy. The school bully. The neighbor. They may all be a part of it. Watch out, because Ace is always watching, and you never know how the cards will fall.

58. Death of a Queen

Deuce staggered forward, fell to one knee. Ace rushed to him immediately, while Zack and Jamie hung back. The Queen moved too, stepping backward, her hand pressed to her stomach. Blood seeped from between her fingers.
“Bastard! You want truth? Your bastard father tried to leave us, Whit! He was going to kill you and Blake both, because he thought you were weak and useless, and then leave me for that other woman! He wanted her over me! Wanted the family she could give him, one without defects and failures!”
Zack stepped forward and broke her neck in one motion, one quick twitch of his wrists.
Ace cried over Deuce where he lay dying. “I’m so sorry, my friend. I tried to hide it, to keep it from you. I didn’t want you to know.”
“It’s alright. It’s alright, Jesse. You don’t have to-”
“But I… do. I have to say this now… or I’ll never have the… chance.” His words came slowly, harsh, ragged breaths between. “I didn’t want… to hurt you. Never… that… I just wanted to keep… you safe.”
 And it was over.
