You have just moved into a new house, in a new town, with a new school and new people. Even though you were nervous, you were also excited. For the most part, you got along well with people, so you were eager to make new friends.
Clutching a lunch tray, you walk into the school cafeteria after your first morning at school. You look around, not knowing where to sit. Suddenly, you spot a blond-haired boy waving at you. “Hey, Morgan!” he calls over to you. “Want to sit with us?” He is sitting with a girl and another guy.
You smile and head over to his table. You remember that he’s in your English and Spanish class, but you cannot remember his name. When you reach the table, you sit down next to him. “Thanks,” you say. “For a moment there, I thought I wasn’t going to able to sit at a table.”
The boy smiles, then introduces himself. “I’m Niall, and I’m in some of your classes. You looked lonely, so I thought you’d like to join us. This is Jess, and that’s Nick.” Jess and Nick both smile at you.
"Hi," you nod to them. “I’m Morgan."
You have a fun lunch with Niall and his friends, and are disappointed when the block is over. “What class do you have next?” Niall asks you.
You glance at your schedule. “Um, Math,” you say.
"Really? Me too!" Niall says. “Here, we can walk together."
A week later
You and Niall have become very good friends as the days have passed. You get along fine with Nick as well, but for some reason, Jess does not seem to like you.
As you take your usual seat at the lunch table, you hear Jess and Nick talking about the school dance that was coming up at the end of the week. When Niall sits down next to you, he joins in in the conversation. Then Jess asks him, “Hey Niall, do you know who you want to go with?”
Niall smiles. “Yes, but I don’t plan on telling anyone just yet.”
The conversation then turns to other topics. At the end of lunch, as you are walking out of the cafeteria, Jess runs up to you. Under her breath, she hisses, “Niall is mine, do you hear me? Don’t you dare think of going with him to the dance this Friday. I saw him first.” She pauses, then continues, smirking. “But anyway, who would want to go to a dance with you?”
You frown. What? you think. But before you can say anything, Jess takes off in another direction.
On Friday, you notice that Jess seemed to be constantly steering Niall away from you. Eventually, even Niall notices. “Hey, Jess,” he says gently, “why are you excluding Morgan so much?” Jess just glares at you. Niall frowns, then says, “Morgan, I was wondering… would you like to go to the dance with me on tonight?”
You begin to answer, but Jess starts talking before you can answer. “What?!” she shrieks. “Niall, I thought you wanted to go with me! How is she better than me in any way? I’m pre-“
Niall cuts her off. “How is she better than you? Well, for starters, she doesn’t go around insulting people.”
Jess looks at the ground, silent. Then her head snaps up again. “But it’s true!”
Niall shakes his head. “No, it isn’t. For the most part, you’re a nice person, but… I like you as a friend, not anything more.”
Jess seems to accept her fate. “Alright,” she mutters quietly. She turns to you. “I’m sorry for insulting you. I guess I was just jealous. Friends?” She hold out her hand.
"Friends." You say, shaking her hand. Then you grab Niall’s arm. “C’mon, let’s all go to the dance and have some fun." He hugs you as you walk down the corridor together.
