“Lathy… Lathy wake up...” I heard sniffling and felt a poke in my side.
“Hm?” I sat up and rubbed my eyes. “A-Ally..? What’s wrong?” I grumbled when I saw the time. 6 AM. Really Ally? This early? I thought to myself.
“I had a bad d-dweam...” she said wiping her tears on her sleeve. I sighed and patted the space next to me.
“Come lay with me until we need to get up.” She crawled onto the bed and snuggled into my side. I gently wrapped my arms around her and started singing her usual lullaby. It wasn’t long before I heard her soft little snores. I couldn’t fall asleep again. Allison, Ally for short, is my little sister. She’s only 4 and she struggles with her r’s and has a lisp. It adds to her cute factor if you ask me. Our mother died 2 years ago when Ally was only 2. I was 18 at the time and could barely look after myself, let alone a 2 year old. Dad walked out on us when Ally was born. No one knows why, but I suspect he was cheating on mum, because 3 months later he got remarried to a Russian bimbo. He never called to check on us, nor did he pay child support. After mum died, I took Ally in and landed a job at the local recording studio. It isn’t anything important. I’m a mere receptionist, but it pays the bills. I’m turning 20 in few days and I already know what the term ‘parenting’ means.
I sighed and looked at the clock on the opposite wall. Only 20 minutes had passed. Cautiously, as not to wake Ally up, I unwrapped my arms from around her and got up. I took a long shower as to clear my mind and got dressed in black skinny jeans, a black Green Day t-shirt and my usual leather jacket. I sat at the end of the bed and pulled my black Supras on. I applied some make up, looking like the perfect little scene girl. I let my hair out of its ponytail, my normal brunette curls falling down my back. The ends were dip dyed a pinkish purple color. I’m very fond of my hair. It’s the only thing besides Ally that I have left of my mum. Everything else had to be auctioned off to pay for debt my father helped make.
Now came the hard part of my day. Waking Ally up.
“Ally, baby, it’s time to get up...” I said softly placing a hand on her small shoulder. She opened one eye and closed it quickly. I sighed.
“Ally, please... we have to get you dressed and ready for playtime with Jessie.” I pleaded.
“I don’t wanna go to Jethie... I wanna thtay with you...” she wined and I couldn’t resist her charms.
“Fine. I’ll take you with me to the office, but you have to promise me you won’t go running off, yeah?” I sighed and picked out a yellow summer dress for her to wear.
“Oooh, pwetty!” she giggled as I struggled to keep her still and dressed. I ran a brush through her strawberry blonde curls and tied it back with a yellow ribbon. She smiled at me when I finally finished.
“Ready to get going?” I asked grabbing my leather bag off the couch and putting a few juice pouches in it for later.
“Yup...” she said and started dragging her bunny shaped backpack across the floor.
“Hold up little missy. What do you have in there?” I asked eyeing the heavy bag.
“Nothin...” she said and continued to the door. I quickly picked up the bag and unzipped it. A pair of fluffy ginger ears popped out, followed by a white little nose sniffing the air.
“Ally...” I sighed. “We can’t take BamBam with us. It’s not allowed. Are you sure you wouldn’t rather want to go to Jessie’s? She loves BamBam.” I said taking the poor Essex bunny out of the bag. She shook her head and just held her arms out for him. I handed him down to her and she put him in his palace, as she called it. I zipped the bag shut after checking what else she had in it and swung it over my shoulder.
We walked out of the dirty apartment building and made our way to the studio. We received multiple looks from people and I knew they were judging. I shook it off and held Ally’s hand tighter. We walked past a store with a lot of One Direction merchandise in the front window and Ally tugged me into it.
“Ally, I’m going to be late.” I said as she reached for a bracelet.
“Pwease can I have thith?” she asked with a puppy dog face. I sighed, knowing we didn’t have the money for it, but it’s been so long since she’d gotten anything she asked for so I bought it. I quickly slipped it on her tiny wrist and we started walking again. She started singing Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne and I couldn’t help the smile that was growing on my face. We walked into the office, Ally still singing, when we bumped into the boss man himself, Simon Cowell.
“Good morning Mr. Cowell.” I greeted politely. He gave me a nod and smiled at Ally before disappearing around the corner to his office. I walked over to the desk and dropped my bag in a drawer.
“Louis, do you have a carrot mate?” a strong Irish accent spoke.
“No, why Niall?” another voice asked.
“I want to feed the bunny.” He said and they chuckled. I spun around and saw 5 boys standing at the front desk. I felt the blush creep up my neck and quickly took it off and handed it to Ally, her little arm extending just enough to show her bracelet.
“Looks like we have a little fan over here.” One of the boys said. He had blue eyes and caramelish brown hair. That’s when I realized who I was looking at. It was none other than One Direction.
“What’s wrong, love? Cat got your tongue?” Harry, I believe, asked.
“Oh, uh, sorry about that.” I picked Ally up and sat her on my chair. She looked up at me and tried to hide behind my legs. “This is Ally...” I said looking down at her. “She’s a little shy.”
“She’s adorable.” The Irish one smiled down at her.
“She is.” I smiled and placed my hand on her tiny shoulder.
“Not to be a spoil sport here, but we have to get recording guys.” Another spoke.
“Liam stop worrying about everything.” Harry said rolling his eyes. Liam shook his head and turned to me.
“Do you know which room we’re in today?” he asked. I checked the schedule and nodded.
“Room 1. You’re lucky, it’s the best one. Would you like me to show you the way?” I offered, but they shook their heads and with a last smile, disappeared around the same corner as Mr. Cowell had. I turned to Ally and kneeled before her.
“Ally, I have to go make a few copies. Don’t go anywhere, I’ll be right back.” I said.
“I wanna go with you...” she pouted. I sighed and picked her off the chair. We walked to the copy room and I started the copies. I gave Ally some old papers to put through the shredder and she was giggling the whole time. I smiled putting more paper into the machine when I heard a knock on the door. I turned around and saw the blonde Irish guy again. I never did catch his name.
“Lacy, right?” he asked. I nodded and smiled as Ally started giggling again. He smiled and came into the room and sat beside her. She looked up at me scared.
“It’s alright baby, he won’t hurt you.” I assured her. She smiled and poked his cheek, the bracelet dangling around her wrist. He chuckled and looked down at her.
“She’s right. I won’t hurt you. You’re too cute to hurt.” He smiled. “Besides, I wouldn’t want a fan hurt.”
She giggled and hopped on his lap. “N-Niall...” she smiled and started pulling on his lip. He just chuckled and started tickling her.
“Oh my gosh, Ally! You can’t pull other people’s lips...” I scolded blushing bright red.
“It’s okay, really.” Niall chuckled and stood up, putting her on his shoulders as she giggled again. I smiled and realized the machine had stopped. I got the copies I made and started walking back to my desk with Niall, Ally still on his shoulders.
“Was there anything I could help you with Niall?” I asked sitting down at the desk again starting to sort the papers.
“I just wanted to hangout. You seem lonely here.” He said looking around after placing Ally on the desk. He leaned against it and looked over at what I was doing. “Can I help you with anything?”
“Shouldn’t you be recording right now?” I looked up at him confused.
“Harry’s in right now and then it’s Zayn. I’ve got a break for a while.” He shrugged.
“Oh, well okay.” I smiled and continued sorting through the papers.
“So, you’re a receptionist, huh?” he said playing with Ally’s fingers.
“Yep, that’s me. Lacy the receptionist.” I sighed as the phone rang. “Excuse me...” I said answering it after Niall nodded.
“Watch out… your mother was only the first. You and your sister are next...” the line went dead. Confusion crept on to my face and then realization of what I just heard struck me. I started shaking and tried to focus on my work. Niall noticed something was wrong and came up beside me.
“Lacy what’s wrong?” he asked softly.
“N-nothing.” I stuttered my hands shaking as I reached for the next pile of papers.
“Yeah? It doesn’t seem like nothing.” He insisted taking my shaking hand in his large soft one.
“It’s just another threat. Nothing to worry about.” I mumbled, but he caught what I said.
“Threat? Who’s threatening you, Lacy?” he asked putting an arm around my shoulders.
“I-I don’t know...” I stuttered feeling the warmth of his body.
“What did they say exactly?” he asked softly, his hot breath tickling my neck.
“My mother was only the f-first... my sister and I are next...” I said a tear rolling down my cheek.
“Hey don’t cry.” He said wrapping his arms around me.
“I can’t have them take Ally, Niall. She’s all I have left.” I cried into his neck. He didn’t say anything else. He just held me until I stopped crying. I pulled away from him and shook my head. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have cried.” I said wiping the last tears away. Ally crawled over the desk and sat on my lap. She took my cheeks in her hands and kissed my nose.
“No be thad, Lathy...” she said and hugged me. I smiled and kissed her forehead.
“Yo Niall, you’re up!” I heard a familiar voice from the hall.
“Yeah I’ll be right there!” he yelled and grabbed a piece of paper and pen. He scribbled down a number and handed it to me. “Whenever you need anything, whenever you feel unsafe or scared, just call me up and I’ll come over as soon as possible.” He rushed around the corner and I was left with my little sister and a small piece of paper I was too scared of losing.
“Ally, how about I take the day off and we go get ice cream?” I offered and she jumped up and down on my lap giggling.
I walked into the room as the lads turned to stare at me.
“Where have you been Niall?” Louis asked smirking.
“Yeah Niall. Did you have a bunny play date?” Harry laughed.
“Shut up guys. She has a name.” I huffed and sat down on the couch.
“And what is her name? My next girlfriend?” Harry joked. I rolled my eyes and shook my head.
“Her name’s Lacy and back off mate. I really like her.” I said and blushed lightly.
“Ooh Niall’s blushing!” Louis laughed. I groaned getting ready to record my part. I wasn’t feeling it when I started and everyone noticed. I messed up a few times before I got told to go home and come back tomorrow. I sighed and walked out of the room after gathering my things. I smiled thinking I would see Lacy again, but she wasn’t there. Instead, a perky blonde was sitting in her place. I felt the smile disappear. I walked up to her and cleared my throat.
“Do you know where Lacy went?” I asked politely.
“She went home, Mr. Horan. Is there anything I can help with?” she asked batting her eyelashes at me.
“No, thank you.” I groaned and mentally rolled my eyes. I’m tired of girls throwing themselves at me. Lacy was different. She knew who I was and yet she didn’t try anything. She was too focused on Ally and her work. I barely know this girl, but her smile already lights me up. The way she blushes… Keep it together Niall, I thought to myself. I walked out of the building and headed home.
I yawned when we got home and carried Ally to bed. She fell asleep on the bus home. It was only 3 PM, time for her nap. I walked to my room and plopped down on my bed. I pulled my phone from my bag saving the number Niall had given me. I wanted to text him, but I was scared he would think I’m some stalker girl. I shrugged my jacket off and walked to the tiny kitchen. I started cooking noodles for Ally and me when she wakes up. I was almost done when there was a knock on the door. I frowned and tiptoed to the door. I looked through the peephole and saw Rylan our neighbor.
“Hey, Rylan.” I smiled when I opened the door.
“Hey Shoelace, how’s it going?” he asked chuckling and walked inside.
“Eh, its going alright I guess.” I shrugged closing the door.
“Ally asleep?” he asked looking around.
“Yeah. I was just busy cooking dinner.” I sighed and walked back to the kitchen. “Want anything to drink?”
“Oh, uh, yeah sure.” He smiled leaning in the doorway. “Y’know, I don’t know how you do it. Looking after yourself and Ally with only a receptionist’s pay.”
“We’ve accepted the fact that we can’t buy luxuries. No takeout, no shopping sprees.” I shrugged and handed him a beer.
“But you can afford beer?” he asked raising an eyebrow smirking.
“Hey it’s not the expensive kind. Plus, you have to unwind sometimes.” I laughed and took the noodles off the stove.
“True that.” He chuckled sipping his beer. “Look who’s awake.” He smiled when Ally shuffled into the kitchen.
“Lan…” she said calling her by his nickname she gave him when we first moved here.
“Still struggling with the r’s I see Al.” he chuckled and picked her up.
“Lathy, I’m hungwy.” She wined and I set her plate on the small table.
“Food’s already finished.” I smiled and Rylan placed her on the chair. We talked for a while before he had to leave for band practice. Ally and I was just about to start coloring when my phone rang. I checked the caller ID and saw it was Niall. I frowned and answered.
“Niall?” I asked.
“Lacy! I just wanted to check if you were okay. I came back to check on you, but they said you went home.” He sounded relieved.
“I’m fine, Niall. How’d you get my number?” I asked. Did he really care about me?
“I, uhm, I kinda asked Simon for it...” he stumbled over the words.
“I would’ve texted you sometime, but I was a little scared..” I smiled blushing.
“Why were you scared Lace?” he asked.
“I didn’t want to look like some stalker girl.” I admitted. Ally was staring at me with a smile on her face. “Ally stop staring at me..” I said forgetting about Niall on the phone.
“Ally’s there?” Niall asked.
“Oh yeah she’s here. She’s staring at me, like you heard..” I said face palming.
“Can I talk to her please?” he asked chuckling. I held out my phone to Ally who quickly pressed it to her ear.
“Niall!” she giggled. “I’m fine, Lathy doethn’t wanna give me ithe cweam...” I stared at her my mouth open.
“No... Yeth... Okay!” she spoke and smiled. “He wanth you...” she said holding the phone out to me.
“She lied to you; I gave her ice cream this morning.” I explained.
“Lace, its okay, just follow her tomorrow. There’s going to be a surprise for you.” He laughed and then he was interrupted by other voices. “I have to go or I won’t ever hear the end of this. I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow Ni.” I smiled. “Bye.”
“Bye Lace, I love you.” He said and hung up. Wait, did he just say he loves me?
