“Please call us as soon as you touch down in California, okay Rebecca?” Mom said.
“Yes, I will!!”
“And what time is Sarah flying in?” Mom asked.
“Tomorrow at 1 o’clock. And I will pick her up.” I said, a little annoyed since we went over this stuff a bunch of times before.
“Last call for Flight 505 to California, loading at Gate 11.”
“That’s me,” I said, picking up my bag.
“Honey, we want you to know that we are very proud of you and that we love you very much!!” Dad said as he wrapped me in a big bear hug of his.
“I love you too, dad.” I said, hugging him back.
“Love you, Rebecca.” Mom said hugging me and sniffling a little.
“I love you too, mom. Please don’t cry, because I will start to cry too.” I said laughing trying to stop the waterworks. “OK, I really have to go. You guys are going to make me miss my flight!!” I started to walk away, blowing kisses to them.
“Yes, dad.” I said as I spun around to face him.
“Same rules apply… No, boys!” He said jokingly, but yet seriously.
“O-K, dad. Whatever you say. I love you guys!!! BYYYYYEEEE!!!” I said handing in my ticket and walking towards the terminal door. Dad said something again but I wasn’t totally sure what he said. But I’m pretty sure it was, “I’m serious!”
I found my seat and stored my bags in the over head compartment. I sat down and let out a sigh of relief. I went into a deep thought.
Finally I am free. Free to live my life the way I want it to be lived, but I have to be responsible. This is my first time leaving New York and it won’t become a regret. I am very excited to start college at USC (University of Southern California) to study math and music, and play lacrosse as well. And I can’t wait to spend the summer with Sarah at the beach house we are renting. I wanted to get to know the area and people before school started and just spend time with my best friend before we are separated for awhile. As our graduation presents, Sarah’s parents and my parents rented a beach house for the two whole months of summer before we start college.
I lose my train of thought by the flight attendant asking me if I wanted anything. I asked for a pillow. Once I get the pillow, I plug in my Ipod and drift off to sleep. I slept the rest of the trip until we landed. I grabbed my bag from the overhead compartment and walked off the plane. I walked off the plane excited, with my head held high, ready to start a new chapter in my life, ready to expect the unexpected. If only someone told me how crazy the unexpected was.
