After Edmund being a great help, I went back to class. It wasn't easy trying to pretend I didn't exist. Everyone shot me questioning looks, knowing I had definitely not been in the bathroom. It didn't matter. As long as I was safe from my dear brother, it was alright. And that was when the fear came back. This was Callum's next class.
What am I going to do?
It also didn't help that the bell was about to ring any minute now. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't escape Callum. He would be headed here next.
"Hey, did you hurt you head?"
I looked up and found Ray smiling at me.
"My head is fine, though your concern is flattering," I said. Ray and I had gotten along great, teasing each other every chance we got. It was always fun to be around her.
"You couldn't find another person who could care less than I do," she replied. "But......we should test your head with an easy-schmeezy riddle." I looked at her horrified. She laughed, truly laughed. I was so dumbstruck, I didn't even notice when she stopped. It wasn't until she started speaking that I blinked my surprise away. "When you say my name, I'm not there anymore. What am I?"
"Uh.........." I didn't know the answer, but didn't want to give her the satisfaction of knowing she had gotten me. She didn't need me to say it, though. My eyes said enough for her.
"Nothing's wrong with your head. You're as lost as ever."
I couldn't muster a response for that and decided to play a different angle. "It wasn't my brain you were worried about. It was my looks. You didn't want me to lose my beauty." Ray shook her head, trying to get my words out of her head. "But, shame Ray, we're friends, and I don't feel that way about you. Don't take this the wrong way."
At that moment, the bell rang, as loud as it always was. Everyone gathered their things to go to Herbology. Ray walked with me, putting a witty response together in her head. The moment we walked out, paranoia swept over me.
Ray spoke, unaware of my distraction. "You do have good looks." I looked at her, shocked. She didn't notice. "But my cat is way better looking than you."
"What? That ugly thing? There's no way your cat is.......Hey! That was mean!" Ray's cat was truly hideous. It screeched at anyone who came too close and only let Ray touch it. Ray could not stand many things, the negative comments about her cat definitely being one.
"Anyway," she said, changing the topic once more. "What's the answer to the riddle?"
"I....don't know." There was no need to act. She knew I was dumbstruck.
"If you ever give me the answer, the right answer, then I'll tell you a secret about my cat." We were in the greenhouses and had just sat down at a desk when the bell rang again.
I couldn't focus in class, but instead kept thinking about Ray's riddle.
So, what do you think the answer to the riddle is?
What should Ray's cat be called?
Will Bryce ever get the answer and find the cat's secret?
