Xander's p.o.v. (just to clarify, most of the story will be in his point of view, but I'll switch it up every now and then)
"Why do I have to train her?" I whined.
My mother was making me train some stupid girl because her parents were 'worried about her safety.' Jeez, if she can't fight, then why is she even in my pack. Yes, I said my. As soon as my father retired, the old geezer would have to give the pack to me.
'If he gives it to you. You don't even have a mate anymore,' my wolf snarled at me. He had been extremely pissed ever since yesterday.
"Because she's been arriving at the pack house with unbelievable bruises and cuts, and she's continued to make the excuse that she fell. She's obviously lying because she's a very well balanced person. She's a remarkable fighter, but her mother and I are worried. All you have to do is teach her self-defence. It's only for an hour a day, then you have to get ready for your coming of age party," My mother said, changing the subject.
"Fine," I huffed, walking back to my room.
I changed into some shorts and a t-shirt and stomped downstairs to the training room, making sure everyone could hear I wasn't pleased.
"Keep your focus on your opponent and never get distracted," I heard Trevor saying to who I guess was the girl I had to train.
"Oh, Trev," I heard Lilah say seductively.
Lilah was only ever in there when she was training or when Starlet was training, and Lilah is excellent when it comes to self-defence. I walked in and saw Trevor look over at Lilah. Starlet took a running leap towards her brother and made him fall to the ground, pinning both of his arms above his head.
"Always keep your focus on your opponent, Trev," Starlet said with a small laugh, using his own words against him. I watched in awe as Starlet got up off Trevor, and Trevor hopped back onto his feet.
I gulped as I took in Starlet's choice of attire. She was in black short-shorts and a blue sports bra along with a pair of Jordan 23s. I've screwed lots of girls, but damn. She stretched and my eyes nearly popped out of my head.
"Time for your self-defence lessons, Star," Trevor said hesitantly.
"Okaaaay, I have no idea what the hell you're talking about, but bring it on," Starlet said, determined. I love that.
"Um, I'm not your teacher," Trevor said as if it were a question.
"Well who is?" Starlet asked.
"Xander. Look, I know you don't like him, but he's my best friend. He won't hurt you," Trevor said quickly, grabbing Lilah's hand and rushing out of the room before Starlet could say anything else.
"Hi, Starlet," I said quietly, watching in pain as her eyes projected the horror she probably felt.
"U-um, h-hello, Xander," She stuttered. Her stuttering is cute, but not when it's out of fear of me.
"Can we talk?" I asked, trying to avoid looking at her body. I'm going to have to take a cold shower before my party. Did I mention she has major curves?
"A-aren't we supposed to be training?" She asked.
"Yea, but Starlet-"
"Please don't," She whispered.
"I think I need to go for a run. We can train some other time, just, not now, please," She said, gathering her towel and water bottle and leaving me standing there.
"Mother! Dad, tell her I look fine!" I shouted, trying to get away from my mother, who was trying to fix every single detail about me. By the way, I was right about the cold shower.
"He's right, dear. Plus, his party's about to start and people are already starting to arrive," By people, I knew my father meant the girls my mother had invited.
My mother had invited girls from every pack near us to help me find my mate. But I already found her. Of course, they don't know that. No one does except Starlet and I. And probably Lilah
"Oh, I still have to finish the salsa! Xander, go help finish setting up outside. Reginald, go entertain the guests while Xander and I finish the final preparations for the party," my mother said hurriedly, pushing me down the stairs.
I almost fell, but regained my balance and walked outside into the backyard.
"Sup, dude," Trevor said before going back to blowing up ballons.
I nodded in his direction and continued to walk around the backyard, putting tablecloths on all the tables. Our backyard was huge, and didn't even have a fence. It led straight into the forest. As I got closer to the deck where my parents, the betas and their family and I would be seated, I heard the faintest of singing. I stopped what I was doing and traced the voice to the deck.
Starlet was there, singing softly while setting up the table. She was dressed differently. She wore an off-the-shoulder black shirt with the words 'Why Live Just to Die?' on it, and grey ripped skinny jeans along with black combat boots.
She fluttered around, placing a candle here and sprinkling confette there. She had her back to me the entire time, which I didn't mind. She was singing to Lost In Paradise by Evanesence.
When she finished setting up the tables, she let out a deep sigh and turned around. I don't know why, but I hid. I hid and continued to watch her as she went to the table I had abandoned and straightened the tablecloth.
She hung streamers on the big oak tree in the middle of the backyard, then bent over and dug in a box for more decorations.
'It wouldn't be hard for you to do her right now,' my wolf suggested. Horny bastard.
She pulled out a sign and asked Trevor to help her hang it. Once they had it up, she took a few steps back and admired her work. The backyard looked amazing. It had a royal blue base color, and since that's my favourite, I liked it. There were millions of black, royal blue, and silver streamers all over the backyard, and hung in the middle of the oak tree, was a sign that said 'Happy 17, Xander,' with the signatures and notes of pretty much everyone in the pack on it. Starlet's stood out to me immediately.
'Happy bday, dude. Hope you and your mate live happily ever after-*Star*' I don't know why, but that note made me a little angry. Well, more like made my wolf angry.
'How can she expect us to live happily ever after when you've messed everything up?' He growled at me.
"Well done, Starlet! Can you and Trevor help me bring out the rest of the food?" My mother asked, carrying a large bowl of salsa out and setting it on a huge table.
"Yes, Luna," Starlet and Trevor said polietly, going back inside with my mother.
I let out a breath I'd been holding for a while and went up onto the deck, sitting down and propping my feet up on the table. I closed my eyes and tried to just think and figure some things out.
Starlet Loving is my mate. She's also the girl I've bullied since the 6th grade. She's afraid I'll hurt her. I won't. I love her. She won't even let me talk to her. My wolf's pissed at me. She gets hotter and hotter every time I see her and it's becoming hard to contain myself. I'm currently sitting at a table at a party where I'm to be surrounded by single females who're hoping their my mate. All except my actual mate. Yep, my life is royally screwed up.
"Could you take your feet off of the table?" I opened one eye and saw Starlet standing there with a stack of plates in her hand.
"Uh, yea, sure. You need any help?" I asked, taking my feet off the table.
"No thanks," She replied, sliding plates onto the table in front of every chair. She finished by setting the last plate in front of me.
"Happy birthday," She said quietly, turning and going to help my mother finish setting up the tables.
Once everything was set up, my mother went to invite the guests into the backyard. I saw Quintell, a friend of mine since we were in diapers. His family moved to London when we were both ten.
"Well, hello there, beautiful," He said to Starlet, taking her hand and kissing it.
'Kill him! RIP HIS GOD DAMN HEAD OFF!' My wolf snarled. I was pretty pissed, too, but I knew he was just being friendly. Guess jealousy won, because I got up from my seat at the table and made my way over to the two.
"Hello, Quintell," I said through gritted teeth.
"Hey, there's the birthday boy!" Quintell shouted.
"Yea. Anyway, I think that cute blonde over there is checking you out," I said, pointing at a girl who had been staring at me for a while.
"Really?" He asked hopefully.
I saw Starlet roll her eyes and walk away. Good, now she thinks he's a douchebag. Or thinks I'm a douchebag...
"Hey, Xander, Can I talk to you?" Lilah asked, not waiting for an answer before pulling me into the empty house.
"What the hell?!" She shouted, slapping me across the face.
"What was that for?" I shouted back.
"For crushing my best friend's heart, douchebag," She replied simply, turning and walking back outside. Starlet came in minutes later carrying empty bowls. There were a lot, and it looked like she was struggling.
"Let me help you," I said quickly, taking most of the bowls away from her.
"You're wanted outside," She said as soon as she set the bowls in the sink, going to open the fridge.
"Why won't you let me talk to you?" I asked her as I watched her pull out a can of whipped cream.
"What's there to talk about?" She asked before squirting whipped cream into her mouth.
"Us," I said, frustrated. She was doing this on purpose.
"Ok. Let's talk. We danced at school. It meant nothing. It's your birthday. Happy birthday. There is no us, and there probably won't ever be. You can go back to physically and mentally abusing me tomorrow and things can go back to normal. Nice chatting with you," She said in a very fake sweet voice, shutting the fridge.
She squirted more whipped cream in her mouth and shrugged her shoulders at me before going back outside. Well then.
"Hi there, Xander," the blonde girl who was staring at me earlier said, entering the kitchen.
"Uh, hi," I said, getting ready to walk outside. She stopped me by putting an expensively manicured hand on my chest.
"What's the rush. Don't you feel the sparks?" she whispered seductively.
I looked outside to see if Starlet was watching, but she was having a conversation with some really buff guy.
"Do you know him? And what pack is he from?" I asked the girl, pointing at the guy talking to Starlet. Blonde girl followed my gaze and rolled her eyes when she saw who I was pointing to.
"That's my stupid older brother. We're both from RavenWing pack. Looks like he found another skank to screw. Anyway, back to us," she said, which was the absolute wrong thing to say.
I continued to stare at that guy and Starlet, and something about him was off. Starlet seemed tense. I saw him laugh and grab Starlet's butt. She jerked away from him and slapped him. Good. I let a small smile creep onto my face. Starlet stormed into the kitchen and past blonde girl and I, going upstairs. I saw her eyes start to water, and I got pissed off. Lilah followed minutes later, scoffing when she saw the blonde girl and I.
"I think we should go somewhere more private," the blonde girl said after a while, her hand travelling up my chest and going to unbutton my shirt. An opportunity I would have jumped at just a few days ago seemed to make me sick.
"How about no," I said, knocking her hand away and going outside.
I grabbed the guy who was messing with Starlet by the collar and jerked him into the forest. Before he could say anything, I punched him in the jaw. I kept hold of his collar as I continued to punch him repeatedly.
"Dude, what's wrong with you?!" Trevor asked, pulling me away from the guy. He spat blood and looked at me with anger in his eyes.
"I'm going back inside. Plus, your welcome. He grabbed your sister's ass," I said angrily, stalking back toward the house as I heard a low growl rise from Trevor.
"Hun, I know you're not planning on disappearing again!" My mother shouted at me as I went to go back inside. I stopped and groaned inwardly.
"Come sit down. Now where have Starlet and Lilah gotten off to?!" She said, getting annoyed.
"I'll go get them. I promise not to take long," I said quickly, sliding open the glass doors and going into the house.
I walked upstairs and knocked on Starlet's door.
"Who is it?" She called from the other side. Something is telling me she doesn't want to be bothered.
"Xander. My mother wants you and Lilah to come back downstairs," I called back.
Lilah opened the door a minute later, narrowing her eyes at me before dragging Starlet towards and down the stairs. I followed slowly, watching Starlet's bored expression as she was literally carried down the stairs.
"Ah, now everyone is finally here. Walter , start the music," My mother said happily.
I was forced to dance with at least ten different girls, even though I'd rather have been dancing with Starlet. She was looking bored and talking to Lilah when the song Troublemaker by Olly Murs came on. I'm guessing that's her and Lilah's favourite song because they both squealed like little girls. I'll have to remember that. They danced and sung along to the song until it was over. Then a slow song came on.
"May I have this dance, malady?" Trevor asked Lilah.
"Remember," Starlet said, grabbing her best friend by the shoulders and shaking her, "NO GRANDCHILDREN!" Her loud shout caused a few people, mostly girls, to look in her direction, and she stared down every last one.
"Xander, have you found her yet?" My mother said, pulling me away from the girl I was dancing with. I shook my head no and her face fell.
"Sorry, mother," I said sympathetically. My mother has wanted me to find my mate more than I did.
"Don't be, sweetie. You can't rush fate," My mother sighed.
"It's finally time to eat," My father announced.
I was to get my food first. Then the Alphas. Then the Betas. Then the beta's children and Lilah since she was Trevor's mate. Then everyone else. Once everyone from our table got our food, we all went and sat on the deck at the table Starlet had took careful time to prepare.
"This entire place looks beautiful!" My mother gushed, complimenting Starlet and Trevor.
"Nothing's too good for the future alpha," Starlet said with a shrug of her shoulders, pulling out the can of whipped cream she had gotten from the fridge earlier.
To the horror of her mother, Starlet squirted whipped cream straight from the can into her mouth.
"Starlet! That is not ladylike!" Her mother exclaimed.
"I apologize, mother," Starlet said, squirting whipped cream onto her spoon.
"Better?" She asked before sticking the spoon in her mouth. Her mother seemed like she was about to burst, and let out a small growl.
"And that's my cue to go and hide. Happy brithday, yada yada yada, 17, blah, blah, blah, present! See you guys tomorrow, if I live to see the day," Starlet said quickly, pulling a present out from under her chair and sliding across the table in front of me.
She ran back inside the pack house, but not before taking the whipped cream and squirting more into her mouth. I swear, she's addicted to sweets. I looked at the present she had given me and then looked to where she had disappeared.
"Open it. It's from Star, Lilah and I," Trevor said, prodding at the gift with his fork.
I hesitated before taking the wrapping paper off the present. Inside was a ps4, along with the games Assasin's Creek 4: Black Flag, Battlefield 4 and COD: Ghosts.
"Sweet!" I exclaimed.
A ps4 was the only thing I really wanted for my birthday.
"Glad you like it. It was Star's idea," Trevor said before shovelling more food into his mouth.
"Do either of my children have any manners?!" Mrs. Loving sighed.
