The past six months proved to be good ones. Caiden got promoted and now ran his own section of the company. Krista and Brad were engaged to be married in the next year, and his brother, Mason, had his second child. Sienna had decided to name their second daughter after Ava, it was a sweet gesture. Caiden felt good, better than he had in awhile. After four years he was finally coming to terms with loss; and the likelihood that Ava was not going to return.
After one particularly long day at work, Caiden went home and switched on the television and once he had flipped through the channels several times, he went into his study and decided to play some video games. He went to bed early that night due to an early morning meeting, a very important one.
Caiden woke up somewhere foreign. Once he got his bearings, he realized that he was in the woods someplace. Looking around he spotted her crouched behind a tree, she looked just as he remembered. Dark, midnight black hair and startling green eyes; something in Caiden's heart broke all over again. She was wearing what seemed to be a black dress, though it had been torn to shreds and covered in what looked like dirt. Caiden stepped forward, but something pushed him back. To his left a man, pale with dark hair and glowing blue eyes, stood beside him. He held a finger to his mouth then pointed back to Ava.
There was a noise to their right; eyes wide, Ava crept forward peering around the tree. From the expression on her face Caiden knew she was scared.
"We have to get her." I whispered to the man next to me. He simply shook his head and pointed towards the bushes. As if on cue, a rustling sound came from that direction, and a low rumbling growl.
"Shit." Ava cursed, Caiden's attention was turned back to her. She spun around on the spot and ran off, never looking back. Again he moved to follow her, but the man stopped him. The man's gaze was back towards the brush; Caiden followed his eyes and saw a large creature. First all he could see was its eyes, large yellow eyes. It seemed to slither out from its hiding spot. Then he noticed the talons, and the short powerful legs, long body, and long spiked tail. It had a long neck, and large mouth full of sharp teeth. Blood stained its entire mouth and even its feet and tail. The thing was meant to kill, to hunt, to destroy. Caiden's heart pounded in fear for Ava; even more so when he saw four more pairs of eyes emerge from the brush behind it. There were more of them? They crept around looking in all directions. But no other bodies appeared, that was when Caiden realized that the other heads belonged to the same monster, it had five heads.
"Oh my God." Caiden muttered, his skin crawled as he stared at the creature. He was too mortified to look away. The heads continued to search the immediate area looking in all directions, high and low. His heart pounded, palms began to sweat in fear that it would see them. But after a moment it left as if it didn't see them or smell them. As it left it seemed to glimmer, then all together disappear. It had camouflage, like a chameleon. It was a reptile.
In the distance Caiden heard the low growl of the beast and then a high pitched screech. It sounded unreal to him. It hadn't been Ava... had it? He moved to follow but for a third time, the strange man stopped him.
"No. You can't go any further."
"Why not? Who are you?" Caiden asked. He tried to shove the man off of him, but it was useless.
"A guardian. Yours. Your heart wants to know what happened to your lover." The man didn't blink once, his eyes were unsettling. Caiden tried to look away.
"As you can see, she is facing a fate worse than death itself. But this wasn't the worst."
Without another word he placed his hands on Caiden's head and everything went black.
Caiden woke up panting hard. Throwing the sheets off him, he ran to the bathroom and washed his face in attempt to calm himself. The cool tiles felt good beneath his feet.
"It was just a dream." He told his reflection. Then it was forgotten. Caiden fell back asleep easily. He dreamed about the woman he worked with, nothing inappropriate, but when he woke up he felt as if maybe it was time to move on.
Hello lovelies, two chapters in one night. This one is extremely short. But I had to leave it this way, I didn't want to reveal too much! Sorry if Caiden upsets you, he upsets me too.. But come on, he can't wait around forever for someone who may or may be alive.
