*Approximately One Year Later*
Ava woke up in a cold sweat, she glanced at the clock and saw that it was three. Ava sighed, feeling calm. She rolled over and touched the person next to her; feeling his warm skin was was comforting.
'Thank god' She kissed his shoulder and fell back asleep listening to the boy's heartbeat.
In the morning, Ava woke up to kisses from Caiden. He wrapped his arms around her and his bare skin was warm against hers.
"Mornin," she muttered with a small smile on her face. Caiden pulled her close to him, her head touching his bare chest. His body radiated so much heat, Ava found it comforting.
"Morning baby," he whispered. Caiden turned on his side and kissed Ava's shoulders, she shivered. He looked up, his blue eyes meeting her hazel ones. "How did you sleep?" He kissed her neck lightly, the feeling tingled but Ava just sat silently. He stopped and sat up.
"Did you have another nightmare?" He ran fingers through her dark hair. Ava didn't respond, instead she looked down at Caiden's chest.
"Ava, is it the same one?" He said; Ava said nothing. Caiden had strong brawny arms and an incredibly irresistible collar bone, his shoulders were broad, but they weren't threatening; he was strong but comforting. He had a defined jaw, and light blue eyes. His sandy hair sat messily on his face, it was a sexy look. Ava pulled Caiden down to her, a fire spreading where their bodies made contact. She leaned up and kissed him lightly on the mouth.
"Are you listening to me?" He asked, his baby blue eyes searching hers. Despite his cool demeanor, true worry was in his eyes.
"I'm sorry," Ava said. Caiden shook his head and leaned down and slid his arm under her. Being close to him made all Ava's bad dreams disappear. She thanked God everyday that she had been given another chance to have him. Caiden was her savior, her fallen angel. He was always there when no one else was. There wasn't anything Ava wouldn't do to protect him.
The soft innocent kisses, slowly turned into something more with him. Leaning onto him, Ava traced his collar bone with her finger tips. In one swift movement, Caiden rolled Ava back onto her back and kissed her hard, becoming more passionate by the second.
'Buzz,' Caiden buried his face into the pillows as the alarm rang.
"Damn it," he cursed, Ava giggled. She let her hands feel down his chest making their way lower and lower.
"Tease," he muttered. Ava kissed his forehead and moved to get out of bed.
"Here's an idea," he sat up. "Skip class." He smirked. He watched as she got out of bed and stripped off her pjs.
"You know I can't do that." Ava said as she shimmied into her jeans. She threw on a t-shirt and walked back to where Caiden was sitting.
"Please?" He begged, grabbing her thighs. He kissed her stomach and and rubbed her inner thighs sensually.
"No." Ava ruffled his hair and grabbed his hands. Then she turned and walked to the bathroom to prepare for the day. When she returned, she found that Caiden had already dressed.
"I will walk you," He winked.
They lived in an apartment only a few miles from the campus, so walking when the weather was nice wasn't too bad. Caiden had already finished school and was finishing up an internship, he had a jobbed lined up with a computer company. Ava was in her last year of college, it was during her second class that she had some sort of panic attack... at least that's what she thought it was.
Ava could hear a faint laughter and a growl coming from everywhere around her. When she would look around, the room was silent. Taking a deep breath she tried to focus on the lecture, this class was very important for graduation. Soon the sound became unbearable, making concentration impossible. Ava covered her ears and closed her eyes for a moment, she hoped no one would notice. When she looked around she saw many people sleeping. Ava looked back to the front of the room and out of the corner of her eyes she thought she saw someone in the doorway. There was no one there. Finally, at the end of class Ava stood and all but ran out the door. She looked over her shoulder as she left and could have sworn she saw a pair of red eyes watching her.
'What is going on?' Ava asked herself as she made her way to the cafeteria.
She sat down at her usual table and opened her laptop. While she waited for her friends she tried to calm down. After a few minutes she decided that she must be sleep deprived, the nightmares were messing with her sleep schedule. She was hearing and seeing things, they weren't real.
"You look like shit." Ava's friend said. She was a short girl with dark hair.
"Thanks Kate, I'm not sleeping very well." She responded.
"Aw, I'm sorry. Is Caiden a snorer?" She giggled.
"No he sleeps silently." Ava smiled.
"Well lucky girl. Then what's wrong?"
"Damn, they must be something fierce to keep you awake." Kate said sitting next to her.
"It's always the same one. I am in bed, and I hear this voice... it's more of a cackle. But then I see this pair of red eyes right above me and I feel the sheet get torn from the bed and something grabs my feet, digging into my skin. It feels so real. Then I am in complete darkness, but I feel like I am surrounded by fire. My entire body is burning, but from the inside out. I feel claws ripping my skin, and just when I think it is over. Flames erupt and I find myself chained to the ground by my arms and legs and someone is turning a crank, tightening my chains. I feel pain all over my body, and actual fire begins to burn my skin. The thing is, nothing happens to my body. I am engulfed in flames and I feel the pain but my skin doesn't burn, it never ends. Then this monster with wings appears and laughs at me, and the dream always ends right then."
"What the fuck." Kate says after a moment. Ava shrugs, trying to laugh it off.
"You need help." Kate said, putting her hand on Ava's arm.
"You're telling me." She rolled her eyes and closed her laptop.
By the end of the day, homework had piled up. She walked home alone, and then entire time she felt eyes on her back. But every time Ava would turn around, there was no one following her. Regardless, she picked up the pace and hurried home.
When she opened the door, a sweet aroma wafted out. Ava inhaled deeply, Caiden was doing something in the kitchen. As she walked around the corner Caiden smiled.
"Someone has been busy." She laughed walking toward him. He wiped his hands on a towel and grabbed her waist. He moved hair from her face and kissed her nose.
"Slaving away as you sit around goofing off all day," he winked.
"Well, excuse me!" She said crossing her arms jokingly. They laughed, and Caiden pulled her closer.
"I know," he said and kissed her one last time before turning back to his masterpiece.
That night the dreams continued, becoming more and more vivid. At one point Caiden was shaking her awake.
"No, no no no. NO!" Ava screamed. Caiden was holding onto her shirt when she became conscious. She clutched his wrists and tried to break free before she realized it was him.
"What's wrong?" In the darkness Ava could see his blue eyes, they seemed to glow in the darkness.
"I... I don't know. I was burning and I got taken from you." Ava broke into tears. Caiden pulled her into his arms and cradled her closely kissing her forehead.
"It's okay baby, I won't let anything happen to you. If we got separated I would find you and get you back. Nothing will take you away from me; you were there for me. I love you."
"I love you too." She whispered.
After a while, Ava fell back asleep in Caiden's arms. He stayed away watching her the rest of the night. He held her in his arms and made sure she slept okay. She was terrified and he could tell. Seeing her this way made him scared. She meant the world to him, she had been there for him when he was in the hospital dying. His recovery was unexpected, the doctors thought for sure that the accident would have killed him.
