Though the nightmares had subsided that night after Caiden had woken Ava up, she still dreamed of those mysterious red eyes. She could have sworn they were familiar, but she knew that was crazy. She woke up in the morning still in Caiden's arms, he had fallen asleep with his head against the wall. Ava kissed him lightly and got up; she didn't wake him as she left for school. He needed to rest, considering he had been up making sure she was okay.
Caiden made big plans on Saturday; he woke Ava up early with a tray of breakfast foods beside him.
"Good morning beautiful." He said kissing her head. "Happy anniversary." In his hand he held a slender box. Ava sat up and smiled at him.
"What is this?" She asked. Caiden smiled and handed it to her.
"Just open it." Ava took the box and opened it, inside was a gorgeous amethyst bracelet with diamond accent. Caiden helped her put it on and kissed her softly.
"Thank you, its gorgeous." Ava said. "I love you," she shrieked, hugging him tightly.
"I'm glad you like it. Breakfast in bed today," he announced handing her a tray. He slipped into bed beside her and grabbed his own tray. They ate together, Caiden's cooking was amazing.
Once she had finished eating, Ava handed the tray back to Caiden who took it back to the kitchen. Ava yawned and stretched her legs a bit and snuggled up to her pillow. Caiden returned and jumped into bed. He grabbed her and pulled her close. Ava giggled.
"Eight years," he whispered in her ear.
"I know," she sighed happily, "A year ago I thought I was going to lose you."
"But you didn't" He smiled and kissed her lips. His touch was so soft, it made Ava's skin tingle.
"Mmmm," She said.
"Go get ready," he patted her leg gently.
She took a quick shower then dried her hair. Wrapping a towel around herself, she walked back into her room. She slipped on a strapless bra and matching panties. Throwing the towel towards the bathroom Ava walked to her closet in search of a dress. A pair of hands grabbed her and dragged her to the bed. She screamed and started to kick in attempt to escape.
"Hey! It's just me, calm down." She turned around and Caiden was holding his hands up in surrender.
"You scared me." She said softly. Truthfully, she had thought that red eyes was coming to get her. She wasn't going to let Caiden know that; was just a dream after all.
I'm sorry," he said laughing. He wore nothing but shorts, around his neck he wore a necklace that Ava had given him on their last anniversary.
"Come here," he said.
"I have to get ready." Ava said standing.
"I just want a kiss." He said in a whinny tone. Ava stepped towards him and leaned over kissing his nose.
"Gee thanks," he muttered.
"Get in the shower." She said winking.
Once he had gone into the bathroom, Ava continued her search for a dress. Eventually, she found the perfect one. It was a deep red strapless dress with a rhinestone embellished waist. Ava pulled it on and zipped it up. Then she found the silver wedges she liked, and pulled those on. Walking over to the vanity, she curled her hair and put on a necklace.
"Damn," Caiden said, Ava turned around. He was leaning in the doorway with a towel wrapped around his waist. His abs were still a little wet, giving them a polished look. "On second thought, lets stay in the house."
"Come on, you've been looking forward to this forever." Ava winked.
"Yeah, but you look too good to take out." He said walking towards her.
"Well, get dressed." She said denying his move. He sighed and grabbed some clothes.
Finishing her make up, Ava walked back into the bathroom to look herself over. Caiden was ready in minutes, wearing nice jeans and a button up plaid shirt. It was more casual than her outfit, but it was still nice.
"We'll have to stop before dinner so I can change." He smiled as he led Ava to the door. At the car he unlocked her door and helped her in. He leaned into the car and looked her over a few times.
"Have mentioned how beautiful you are?" He smiled and kissed Ava on the forehead. His hair fell into his eyes, he looked good.
" Hmm, let me think." She said. "No," Caiden laughed and kissed her softly on the lips. He cupped her head in his hands and ran his thumb over her cheek.
"You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen," He said looking into her eyes. They stared at one another for a moment, a far off look was in Caiden's eyes.
"What?" Ava asked.
"I was just thinking about how we met." He smiled. Caiden walked to his side of the car and they drove off.
First they went to a building out near the mall. They met with a photographer and drove out to the park near their apartment. They spent an hour or so with the photographer taking pictures.
"Okay now sit together like this," the photographer would say, or, "turn just a little bit... good good."
Once he had left, Caiden ran to the car and grabbed a couple of blankets and a basket. When he returned, he threw the blankets onto the ground and fell onto them. He gestured for Ava to sit with him. She did, taking off her shoes and straightening her dress.
"What is this?" She asked tucking her hair behind her ear. She leaned towards Caiden and smiled looking into his eyes.
" I thought we could relax for a bit and have a snack, drink some wine." He said pulling the wine bottle and snacks from the basket.
"Today is perfect." She said hugging him tight. He kissed her softly and took her hands.
"I forgot the glasses in the car, give me a second." He stood up, giving her another kiss and ran back towards the car.
It was a beautiful day out, the sun was shining and the trees looked magnificent. Ava laid back and watched the clouds pass by for a moment. She sighed feeling content, but there was something nagging at her.
'One year...' She heard a low voice whisper in her mind. She sat up and tried to shake the feeling it gave her.
In the blink of an eye the clouds changed. The sky grew dark, clouds covering the sun. Thunder and lightning struck, the wind picking up. Ava's hair blew into her face, she stood up and looked around her. The grass that was surrounding her had died. She looked off into the distance at the woods and could have sworn she saw red eyes staring at her. Her eyes darted back to Caiden, who was still ransacking the car for the glasses. Her dress blew up as the wind continued, she pushed it back down and started to run to him. Then she heard the low voice loud and clear.
"One year... time us up hon." She spun around and saw a man standing at the edge of the woods. Ava whipped her head back around and ran faster.
"Caiden!" She called, her eyes wide with fear. He poked his head out from the car, and seeing her panic he started running towards her.
"Ava, oh my god!" He screamed, his eyes flickered over her shoulder.
"Come on pretty, you knew this was going to happen." The voice was directly behind her. It sent chills down her spin as it spoke. It was more of a hiss than anything.
A memory flashed in her mind.
"A small price... one year." Her heart shattered as she remembered what she had done. 'How could I forget?' She asked herself. Looking over her shoulder she came face to face with the red eyed creature. He lifted his hand and grabbed her arm. Ava fought with the thing, but it's grip was like iron.
"Come now pretty, we had a deal." As he spoke his face transformed. His skin looked burnt to ashes, and horns protruded out of his temples. The tips of his fingers turned to talons and dug into her skin. Ava felt a burning sensation and the world began to grow dark.
"Ava! No!" She heard Caiden calling. She could see him reaching out to her. By then it was too late, she was falling into the darkness from her nightmares.
