The Year of Opportunities

This story is your typical high school based story. What is the state of Texas best known for... Football! This story will not just be about football; there will drama, realistic situations, romance, boundaries will be broken (that have and haven't be broken in real life).

7. Girls can play football!!

~~The month of September is ending, and the second home game is beginning in minutes. Day after day, the team has been constantly improving the game plan. Coach Cassie made sure that every player is synched with the 4-3 defensive scheme, special team coverage, and multiple offense personnel. Tonight, the Garland Knights can prove not only to themselves, but also, to the entire district that they mean business.
The referee had just finished the coin toss process, and we decided to take the first possession of the game. The opening kickoff could not have gotten any better; the special teams got the ball to the opponent’s forty-yard line.
Dimitri’s POV:
As I made it onto the field, and I remembered what Coach Cassie told me in the locker room. She said, “Dimitri, even though the deep pass work last game; on the first play. Remember: scan the defense, pay attention to any shifts (especially the linebackers and safeties). Do not forget to work in the silent snap count. Give the hand signal to the receivers, and the offensive guard will tap the center.”
The entire team got set at the line of scrimmage. I scanned the defense, and realized they were in man coverage. I gave the wide receivers the signal for quick slants and told the running back to “run the flat route.” We had three receivers, one running back, one blocking tight end, and the five offensive linemen on the field (including me). I took the snap from the shotgun formation and had a few seconds in the pocket. While in the pocket, Ashley Cruz, the slot receiver, beat her defender and caught the pass for a twenty-five-yard gain.
The red zone, we have reached the red zone. We are fifteen yards away from scoring a touchdown. Once again, we got in the same formation and the defense were in man coverage. This time, we ran the ball to the right side. Jackson Coleman ran in between the left guard and tackle and scored the touchdown. The crowd were going crazy and screaming that we could not even hear each other congratulating one another.
The game finally reached the middle of the fourth quarter. The score was 23-16; we, the Garland Knights, had our defense on the field. The Mesquite Wildcats were at its own thirty-six-yard line and attempting to either tie or win the game. The crowd were even louder than before, and each sideline were jumping out of their football equipment.
The defense was on strict duties of mixing up some zone and man defense. Every play the opposing offense were running would result in short gains, and the clock continued to run. The clock read two minutes and fifteen seconds, and coach wanted to put an end to this game. So, she rushed three linemen, two linebackers dropping in coverage, and six defensive backs. Since it was third down, it became clear that the opposing team had no choice but to throw. That is exactly what happened, and Ashley Cruz was once again in the right place, at the right time, and intercepted the ball to end the game.
