5. Raven vs. Snake

Over the next few weeks at Hogwarts, Holly fell into a distinct rhythm. Every morning she followed the Harry, Ron and Hermione and usually Ginny down to the Great Hall for breakfast. Less students glanced her way each day, she supposed it was due to her new school robes she received a few days recently and the fact that she was now old news. She sat in silence until they made their journey to their various classrooms. Harry, Ron and Holly all had the same schedule, Holly in most cases walked behind the two to avoid their harsh glances and the accidental touch of Harry that would send her flying.

The classes she looked forward to the most were Potions and Charms. These classes meant she would be sitting beside Draco Malfoy, who made the classes interesting and fun. In Potions he would teach her the proper way to brew potions and made quirky anagrams to help her remember the different ingredients. In Charms, Holly turned into the teacher, helping Draco and the rest of the students reach their full potential of the spells. During Harry and Ron’s free periods, Holly took refuge in the library to work on her homework and avoid the evil eye of the majority of students. Since Harry wasn’t taking History of Magic in his sixth year, Professor McGonagall had given Holly a list of books to read and take notes on the various aspects of wizarding history.

Draco Malfoy joined Holly in the library when his classes were finished. They helped each other in Potions and Charms until dinner when they sat together in the Great Hall. Because of this, Holly received even more dirty looks. She had heard of Draco’s reputation but had never experienced his harsh attitude first hand. Whenever they were together he didn’t seem to notice anyone else, only talking and paying attention to Holly. When the weather was nice the pair took to studying outside under a tree by the lake. Those days were cut short in mid-October so the library became their main study spot. Because of the stares she was receiving, Holly claimed the furthest desk in the library, hidden in the corner from the majority of looks from the students. Draco hadn’t questioned her choice of desks for some time but finally asked her about it during one of their studying sessions, a few weeks after Halloween. While Holly was re-reading how to make the Polyjuice Potion for the umpteenth time, he interrupted her.

“So, why are we always hidden in this part of the library when we come here? Not that I’m complaining, it’s just a little peculiar that’s all”

Holly looked up from her textbook and smiled slightly, “Oh c’mon, don’t tell me you haven’t noticed. The looks people give me are far from friendly, especially when they see me with you.”

Draco looked at her quizzically, “No I haven’t, what do you mean?”

Now Holly had the confused look on her face, “This school follows whatever Harry says and does. Especially now that they know he was telling the truth about the Dark Lords’ return. Because he doesn’t like me, no one does. The students who don’t like Harry still don’t like me because they think I was sent by Voldemort as a spy or something. The people who don’t believe that, don’t like me because they don’t like you. Apparently you’ve been labelled as a bully for the past five years whose Professor Snape's favourite and whose father is a Death Eater.” Holly paused and looked Draco in the eye, seeing if she had gone too far. When she mentioned his father, Draco looked down at the desk.

Holly tried to lighten the mood, “People also say that you’re dating Pansy Parkinson and that being with me, you’re cheating on her. Should I be worried about a gang of Slytherin girls coming to get rid of me?” She said with a smile.

At this Draco looked back at her quickly, a slight smile on his face, “Pansy and I aren’t dating, don’t worry. We were last year but over the summer she became too clingy so I dumped her. She hasn’t gotten over it but if anyone hurts you they’ll be answering to me.” Slightly taken aback by his comment but flattered all the same, Holly could only smile and blush slightly as she looked down at her book. Draco spoke again, “But I understand now why you’ve been hiding, must be terrible to be on everyone’s radar." He took a deep breath, "You’re right, in the past I have been a bully. This year I guess I finally realized how immature I was being.” Holly nodded, satisfied and they both went back to their studies.

That night Holly entered the Great Hall made her way past the three other house tables for dinner. She found Draco near the end of the Slytherin house table. The only glances she received were from Pansy Parkinson and her group of girls sitting in the middle of the table and the majority of the Gryffindor table. Draco, who was noticing these glares more often since Holly pointed it out, gently bumped her knee under the table to knock her out of her mood. She came back to reality in the middle of Professor Dumbledore’s speech.

“- we will be host once again to the students of Durmstrang and Beauxbatons schools of witchcraft and wizardry. In these trouble times, our friends are our best and safest allies. Similar to the year of the Triwizard Tournament, we will be having a ball. I thought we could let our guest, Ms. Peters decide what the theme would be. I’m sure she has some original ideas from overseas that she could share with us.” Dumbledore’s eyes swept the room and landed on Holly. The rest of the school followed the suit.

Holly could feel her face turning instantly red. Her voice shook a bit as she replied, “Uhm I’m sorry sir but I’ve never been to a b-ball before.” She raised her shoulders and gave an apologetic smile. A few of the students laughed.

“Ah no matter no matter, the theme will be Winter Wonderland as this will be happening in December. Christmas Eve will be the night of the ball, like the Yule Ball two years ago. Now the procedure when visiting students come to Hogwarts-“ Dumbledore’s words trailed off as Holly ceased to listen. The blood rushing through her ears blocked any sound besides her deep breaths trying to calm herself. She wasn't used to drawing attention to herself, she had learned at an early age that when people don't see you, it's for the best.

Crabbe, a Slytherin boy sitting beside her, pointed at her face and laughed, “Your face is as red as a tomato”

“No shit Sherlock,” Holly snapped back. Draco chuckled across the table but Holly paid no attention to him, her only thought was getting as far from everyone as fast as she could.

Dumbledore dismissed the students and instead of waiting for Draco, Holly allowed herself to be swallowed up by the crowd of students. She made it up to her dormitory without being stopped by anyone. She sat on the edge of her bed and tried to compose herself. Hermione came up about half an hour later, and started; it seemed as though she was shocked to see Holly there.

“Erm hi Holly, I was just going to do some homework in the common room with Ginny, would you like to join?”

Excited for the distraction from her thoughts, Holly immediately gathered her textbooks and followed Hermione downstairs. The trio of girls worked on their homework for a solid hour until they took a break and chatted. While they were chatting, the subject of the ball came up. Both Ginny and Hermione were very excited at the thought of another ball.

“I think I want my dress to be red this time, the pink was good but I think the red will make me seem more mature.” Hermione said.

Ginny and Holly nodded in agreement. Holly turned to Ginny and said, “I think a nice green would look amazing with your red hair.”

“Ou that’s a good idea Holly thanks! Are you excited for your first ball?”

“Erm actually I’m dreading it.” Holly replied, “I don’t have any dress robes and then there’s the whole subject of finding a date…”

“Oh don’t worry about the dress robes! We haven’t ordered ours yet either. After our homework we can look through the selection Madam Malkin has in her shop, I’m sure we’ll find something! And don’t fret, I happen to know a few boys have asked me if you were going with anyone yet.” Ginny winked at Holly knowingly.

Before Holly could ask who, their conversation was interrupted by Professor McGonagall coming up to their table.

“Excuse me ladies but Ms. Peters may I have a word in private with you?”

Holly followed the Professor out the portrait hole and to her office.

“Now Ms. Peters, Professor Dumbledore has told me that you share Harry’s talent for flying.”

Holly shrugged indifferently. “When I was with Arthur Abbott our main mode of transportation was flying by broomstick, it was the least detectable especially at night.”

Professor McGonagall nodded in approval, “That will suffice. I’m sure you’ve heard of the Ravenclaw vs. Slytherin Quidditch game set for tomorrow. One of the Ravenclaw chasers has been withdrawn from the school by their parents. Professor Flitwick has asked me to help him find an emergency substitute for tomorrows. Because you can’t play on the Gryffindor team or any games vs. them in case you hit Harry, I thought this would be a good opportunity for you to play.”

“I’d love to Professor! Thank you very much!”

Professor McGonagall smiled at Holly, “The Captain this year is Cho Chang, you’ll meet her and the rest of the team after breakfast down at the pitch. Normally I don’t cheer for any team besides my own but in this case, any team that beats Slytherin will make me happy. Good night Ms. Peters and good luck.”

The next morning Holly met Draco in the Entrance Hall. He was dressed proudly in his Quidditch robes which she could tell boosted his ego slightly.

“Not too shabby eh?” Draco asked Holly as he spun around slowly letting her admire his outfit, “I play the most important position. The Seeker is really the one who decides who wins the game. Unfortunately for Ravenclaw, I’m a much better Seeker than theirs. Their chasers aren’t very good this year either, should be a quick game.”

Holly laughed to herself, 'if only he knew' she thought. They sat and ate breakfast, talking about the recent matches and how each house had faired so far. After breakfast Draco said bye to Holly and made his way to the pitch. Holly, to avoid Draco seeing her enter the Ravenclaw dressing room, cast a Disillusionment Charm on herself, and followed him down a few paces back.

When Holly entered the dressing room, after taking the spell off her, she was met with a team full of dismayed and miserable faces.

“Ah hi guys, ready for the match?” Holly said in a hopeful voice.

“No.” A fifth year boy said, “Without our normal chaser we’re doomed. And Malfoy’s dad bought the whole team Nimbus 2002’s the newest model. We won’t stand a chance.”

Holly was thrown off guard; her team was throwing in the towel before they even started!

“Well good thing Malfoy’s sick today, eh?” Her words were met with skeptical looks, “No really! He was telling me this morning he feels off his game.” She looked at Cho Chang, Ravenclaw’s captain and seeker, “Speed doesn’t always win you know, you have as much of a chance as he does to catch the Snitch.” With her words Cho and the rest of the team perked up slightly.

The horn sounded, signaling the team to enter the field. Holly nodded reassuringly at the team and mounted her broom. The team took their positions in the air. Cho and Draco hovered above the rest of the players, Holly could see that Draco was concentrated on psyching out Cho rather than watching her teammates; her element of surprise was still good. Madame Hooch’s whistle sounded the start of the game and all of a sudden the chasers wrestled for the Quaffle. Holly was finally the one to have a strong hold of it and sped towards the Slytherin Keeper. She easily beat him and threw the Quaffle through the golden hoop. She retreated to play defense when one of the other Ravenclaw chasers bumped the ball from the Slytherin’s grasp. Holly dived and caught the Quaffle about 10 feet from the ground and scored again. As the game progressed it was clear that the Slytherin defense was no match for Holly. The Ravenclaw Chasers learned to use Holly as a scoring machine, setting her up play after play to score. Slytherin’s Beaters tried to knock her off her broom but she avoided every Bludger they sent her way easily.

Deciding they were far enough ahead that she could pay attention to other things, she peered her eyes for the Seekers. She found them just in time to see Cho and Draco about 20 feet from the ground, following each other closely. Holly decided it was the perfect opportunity to make her move. She dove below the pair and came up about 5 feet in front of Draco, making sure to smile and catch his eye as she went past him. Her plan worked; Draco’s head followed Holly’s movement in a sort of double take. Holly waved at him, winked, then sped off in the direction of the other Ravenclaw Chasers. Draco was distracted only momentarily, not enough time as Holly hoped that would give Cho time to catch the Snitch. He sped off on his broom and caught the Snitch from beneath Cho’s nose.

The Slytherin fans roared! Slytherin won the game! A look at the scoreboard silenced them in a second. Yes, Draco had caught the Snitch, but due to Holly’s hot streak with scoring, the final tally of the game read: SLYTHERIN 160 (they had scored once) RAVENCLAW 170. The stadium erupted in cheers! These results haven’t been seen at Hogwarts for years! Both teams landed on the ground, Ravenclaw rushed over to Holly, enveloping her in a massive group huddle. The Slytherin team has dumbstruck looks on their faces as they regarded Holly.

Draco strode over to her, a huge grin on his face.

“Nicely done Peters, good ‘clean’ game.” His hands made quotation signs over the word ‘clean’. Laughing he said, “Good distraction technique, you obviously didn’t need it. Here I was thinking you’d be cheering me on in the stands as my team flew circles around the Ravenclaw’s Chasers.”

“Pfft me? Sit by? Not my thing” Holly winked at Draco. “But thank you, I was keeping a few tricks up my sleeve if need be.”

“Well either way, you won and I’m sure a few more people will be impressed with you. That was some serious flying you did there.”

“Well I can’t take all the credit, Arthur Abbott showed me a thing or two  over the years." Holly laughed to herself over the memory.

Draco smiled, “How about you tell me all about it over a victory drink and dessert?” Holly nodded in agreement and they started their long walk up to the castle.
