12. Goodbye's

That night, Holly watched as Harry received a letter from Professor Dumbledore and hastened away to his office. After he left, Holly moved to Hermione, Ginny, and Ron’s table. She explained that Dumbledore had said for them to keep an eye out tonight for anything suspicious. After recruiting Neville and Luna and the Marauder’s Map from Harry’s trunk, the group split off to their posts. Ron, Ginny and Neville would stand guard by the Room of Requirement. They were acting on Harry’s assumption that Draco was up to something and was trying to kill Dumbledore. Because Draco didn’t appear on the map they believed he was in the Room.

Holly didn’t want to be involved in this Draco hunt so she and Hermione took the Map and started patrolling the hallways. Because Hermione was a prefect she was allowed to be out late at night patrolling the halls. Holly cast the Disillusionment Charm on herself so she would walk beside Hermione but be invisible.

Everything seemed quiet that night. The girls had walked the first six floors of the castle and were on the moving staircases to the seventh floor when Holly heard Hermione gasp. Holly turned to see Hermione staring at the Map, eyes open wide. Holly hurried over to look and saw the names Draco Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange, Fenir Greyback and a handful of well-known Death Eaters appear on the map beside Ron and Ginny Weasley, and Neville Longbottom. Both girls raced up the stairs, past tapestries and suits of armor until they reached a fork in the road. Looking at the Map, Ron, Ginny and Neville were to the left of them and the Death Eaters were to the right.  The girls looked at each other for a brief moment, then quickly ran in opposite directions. Hermione hastened to the trio that were still standing by the Room, some of them looking to be confused and were walking in circles.

Holly on the other hand, sprinted down the corridor and followed Bellatrix’s cackling laughs that echoed down the hall. She finally caught up to the group and immediately spotted Draco’s head in the crowd. He seemed to be moving towards the Astronomy tower so she followed him, invisibly dodging the Death Eaters as she went. Holly had just made her way onto the first step of the stairs to the Tower when she heard a loud BANG behind her. It sounded like the Death Eaters below her were fighting, hopefully with the Aurors that had been stationed in Hogwarts for extra protection. Holly decided that Draco was more important and hurried after him, sprinting up the stairs.

The scene that was staged before Holly when she reached the top of the Tower made her blood run cold. She saw Dumbledore, unarmed and white as parchment, standing by the railing. Across from him was Draco pointing his wand at Dumbledore threateningly. However, Draco’s face didn’t look as threatening as his wand; it was paler than usual and he looked terrified. Harry was under the platform looking up at the pair, wand drawn but silently watching. Holly decided to follow Harry’s lead and she moved quietly to stand beside him. Careful not to touch him –she didn’t want to get blasted away- she moved close to his ear.

“Hey, it’s me, Holly. I’m standing beside you. Move slowly so you don’t touch me” Holly whispered. She moved away a few inches and Harry nodded slightly, never breaking his watchful stare of what was happening above. Holly looked up as well and began listening to Dumbledore and Draco’s conversation.

“And how did they get inside the castle walls?” Dumbledore was asking Draco, referring to the Death Eaters far below them.

“The Vanishing Cabinet in the Room of Requirement. I’ve been mending it all year. There’s one in Borgin and Burke’s, they form a passage.” At Draco’s words, Holly froze. She had helped him mend it, bringing these Death Eaters to the castle.

“And the Dark Mark; is someone dead?” Dumbledore implored. Holly suddenly noticed the large glittering green skull with a snake winding itself from the skull’s mouth floating above the Tower. It was almost an exact copy to Draco’s black mark on his arm.

Draco glanced down the stairs and Holly saw how pale his face went. “I-I’m not really sure, I stepped over a body before coming up here.” Harry turned to where Holly was standing but she whispered a soft ‘I’m not sure’ under her breath. Holly wasn’t certain if she had seen/stepped over a body or not, her only concern was following Draco.

Dumbledore’s voice brought her back to the conversation, “Draco, you are no assassin.”

“I’ve got to! If I don’t kill you, he’ll kill me” Draco’s voice went shrill, sounding of pure terror. His wand was shaking badly at this point.

Holly’s eyes grew wide at the thought. She let out a faint whimper, loud enough that only Harry could hear. So this was the danger Draco was talking about. She was on the verge of movement- perhaps fainting; Holly wasn’t sure- when suddenly Holly felt a slight pressure on her hand. She realized Harry was holding it, squeezing it slightly. Holly slowly regained her composure and was thankful Harry was there to support her. A loud cackle of a laugh was heard on the stairs to the Tower. All four figures turned to see Bellatrix and some of her Death Eater friends join Draco on the platform.

“Ahhaha! He’s disarmed him! Good Draco, kill him so we can leave.” Bellatrix told her nephew, “Do it! Now!”

Draco’s face lost all its blood, his wand now shaking to the extreme. Holly was surprised he could still hold his arm up. Out of the corner of her eye, Holly saw a swish of a black cape and her eyes widened in surprise at the figure of Snape on the platform with the group of Death Eaters.

“Good Snape, you’re here.” Bellatrix said, “Now get Draco to kill the old man so we can leave.”

Holly flinched, and Harry, still holding her hand, suddenly tightened his grip. Holly turned to see his face turned mutinous at the sight of Snape with the Death Eaters. A lone voice was heard, feeble, but still recognizable.

“Severus,” Dumbledore whispered, to the point of begging, “Severus please.”

Holly never heard the words of the curse. The only sound she could hear was a roaring in her ears as she saw the flash of green light and Dumbledore’s body falling off the Tower. Holly was completely disoriented; she felt like she was underwater and didn’t know which way was up or down.

Harry and Holly stood motionless, both in a state of shock.  The noises of the Death Eaters feed running down the stairs shook both of them out of their trance. Dropping each other’s hands Harry and Holly sprinted down the stairs. Neither twin said a word while they raced after the Death Eaters. They reached the end of the stairs and saw a battle was being fought between Order of the Phoenix and Death Eaters. Neville, Luna, Ginny, Ron and Hermione were joined by Professors McGonagall, Flitwick and Sprout and Aurors Lupin and Tonks. They were locked in battle with some of the Death Eaters.

Holly spotted Snape and Malfoy fleeing the scene and her and Harry quickly followed. Their progress was stopped momentarily while they flung spells at the Death Eaters.

“Stupefy!” The twins yelled in unison, hitting at Death Eater at point blank. They had no time to admire their handiwork as the chase for Snape and Malfoy continued. Holly could see that the figures of the fleeing Death Eaters were well in front of them, almost to the boundaries of Hogwarts where they could Dissaparate. Harry, driven by some internal force, kicked into another gear. He pulled ahead of Holly, whose legs were too small to keep pace with him. Holly decided to let Harry deal with Snape, her concern was Draco.

She stopped a few hundred meters from Hagrid’s hut and whispered, ‘Expecto Patronum’. A wispy light appeared from the tip of Holly’s wand. She whispered something to it then sent it soaring in the night’s sky. Holly didn’t have time to enjoy the sight of its progress as the black, starless sky was suddenly full of light. Holly turned to see that Bellatrix had set Hagrid’s hut on fire! The roaring sound of flame masked all but a few voices. Bellatrix’s cackling laugh was soon drowned out by Hagrid’s bellow.

“Fang’s in there you evil witch!” Hagrid roared. He sent spells after the Death Eater’s from a pink umbrella.

Holly reacted quickly, without thought of consequences or danger. She sprinted down the hill and burst into Hagrid’s hut. She searched the one room and quickly found Fang, curled up under the bed and obviously petrified. Holly could feel the heat of the flames surrounding her and quickly summoned Fang from under the bed using the spell Accio. Fang immediately recognized Holly and followed her lead out of the house. They ran together to where Hagrid was standing. A few feet away from the half-giant, Holly saw Harry with is back to the ground. He didn’t look to be in any immediate danger so she turned back to the hut.

“Aguamenti!” She cried. From the tip of her wand came an enormous steam of water. With Hagrid, and eventually Harry’s help, the flame on the hut vanished. Holly turned to Harry and saw that he had already started the trek back to the castle. She felt knots in her stomach when she remembered what lay at the bottom of the Astronomy Tower. She prepared herself for the emotional turmoil she was about to face. The death of Dumbledore would affect them all; in more ways than one.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Somewhere in the Forest, just before the boundaries of Hogwarts ended, Draco Malfoy paused slightly to take a breath. The Death Eaters in front of him kept running, he wasn’t a concern for them; the little school boy who couldn’t kill Dumbledore. Draco knew he’d only have a few moments before Snape would realize Draco was lagging and tried to savor these last few moments of being alone.

Out of the corner of his eyes, Draco saw a bright wispy light travelling through the air. He turned and saw a great eagle, similar to his own Eagle Owl, soaring towards him in the sky. The Patronus made its way to Draco and went through him. He alone could hear the message it brought to him.

Five words were whispered. Though small in length, the words meant more to Draco than anything. He vowed to hold those words in his heart as he braced himself for what was to come.

“I will always love you”
