8. Christmas at Hogwarts

The days after the Winter Wonderland Ball were a confusing time for Holly. On one hand, her love for Draco was stronger than ever, after his sweet gestures. On the other hand, the entire school knew about her screaming fit with Harry. The majority of Harry’s friends kept a distance from Holly but didn’t send her evil glares or mock her while she was around them. It seemed that they had gained a slight respect towards her; she had shown them that she couldn't be walked on. The awkwardness Holly felt in the Gryffindor common room, around students who were more Harry’s friends than hers would soon end.

The winter holidays were almost upon them and Holly had decided to stay at Hogwarts. Mrs. Weasley, included in a letter to Ginny, had invited Holly to The Burrow for the break. With the tension between Holly and Harry being at its peak, Holly had regretfully declined. She was somewhat disappointed on not spending Christmas with an actual family, decorations, and presents but her mood lifted when she asked Draco what his plans were for the break.

“Ugh, well my mother really wants me to go home, since my Dad’s arrest it’s just been her and my aunt at my house.” Draco said during one of their study breaks in the library, “But I really don’t want to go. It’s gloomy and I feel like I’m always being watched; everyone’s just waiting for me to screw up. It’s a big house with a lot of empty rooms, I get very lonely.”

Holly brightened as an idea started forming in her head, “Why don’t you stay here, at Hogwarts, with me?” She asked.

Draco was slightly taken aback but then nodded in agreement, “I’d like that very much, and no one will be here except for the teachers and a few loner students!”

Holly laughed, “We would be classified as ‘loner students’ as well hothead.”

“My head isn’t the only thing that’s hot”, Draco winked. Holly laughed and pushed him away. She pointed to his paper for Professor McGonagall, indicating him to finish writing it.

And so, when the majority of the students traveled home for the holidays, Holly and Draco spend their time roaming the castle, discovering new passageways and hidden secrets, or building snowmen and skating on the frozen lake. It was a wonderful time but the worst part of the arrangement for Holly was sleeping in a completely barren Gryffindor tower. Knowing she was the only one there made every creak and bumps in the night much more terrifying.

On Christmas Day she woke up to a small bundle of presents at the foot of her bed. Curious who would give her anything besides Draco (they were exchanging presents later) she crawled to the end of her bed to open them. Examining the closest one for any sign of who it was from, she tore open the wrappings. What she found was peculiar: a small box-like object that resembled a small pocket radio. Holly pushed a small red button that she supposed was the on/off switch and suddenly an antenna with a disk on the top rose from the box. It turned right and then left, pausing for a few seconds here and there until it stopped for good. Suddenly, a woman singing –very badly- came from the radio.

Oh, come and stir my cauldron, And if you do it right. I'll boil you up some hot, strong love, To keep you warm tonight.

The voice stopped and the antenna sunk back into the ‘radio’. Perplexed, Holly searched the wrappings for any clues. She found a note with scrawly cursive writing that read:

Use this to find your way. The light will guide you to your journey’s end. Keep this to yourself.

Even more confused than she had been before, Holly decided to tuck the radio in her trunk and move on to her other presents. She discovered that Mrs. Weasley had sent her a sweater with the initial H on it. Holly gasped to herself; if appeared to be hand knit. After making a mental note to send Ron’s mum a letter of thanks she saw that Hermione had given her a book Understanding Wizards; What goes on in those thick heads! and Ginny had given her new Chaser gloves. Holly hoped the girls would like gifts she had given them as well.

Wearing her new knit sweater, Holly met up with Draco in the Entrance Hall and they spent the day playing Wizards Chess and a Muggle game called Rumoli. Holly had learned the game when she spent some time in Las Vegas with Arthur Abbott. After a walk around the castle they returned to the Great Hall for Christmas Dinner. Seated at a small table were the Heads of Houses Professors McGonagall, Snape, Sprout, and Flitwick, Professor Dumbeldore, the caretaker Mr. Filch, Professor Trelawney, and two first year students in Gryffindor and Slytherin. The feast of Christmas foods including ham, potatoes, turkey, and sausages was enjoyed by the company as they pulled their exploding cracker jacks, and talked about various subjects.

“So Draco, I see that Holly has been an excellent tutor for you in your Charms class. Professor Flitwick has told me you are almost top of the class, quite near Ms. Granger.” Professor Dumbledore said, inclining his head at Draco.

“Uh yes Professor,” Draco said, slightly taken aback, “I’ve come to enjoy the subject much more since she’s been helping me.”

“And Ms. Tate how are you liking your Charms classes?” Dumbledore addressed the small brown-haired Gryffindor sitting beside him. She jumped slightly, surprised that the Headmaster was addressing her.

“U-Uhm I like it a lot sir, I just have some trouble with the wand movements sometimes.” She managed to squeak out. Dumbledore nodded in agreement, as though he too had trouble in that area. He turned to address the first year Slytherin boy sitting beside Draco.

“And yours Mr. McCormack?”

The Slytherin first-year blushed slightly as he said, “I-I’m ok with the wand movements but sometimes I don’t pronounce the words right.”

“Ah yes, many have this problem don’t you two fret. If ever need some extra assistance I’m sure Ms. Peters here wouldn’t mind lending a hand.” Dumbledore nodded at Holly who smiled back.

“I’d love to,” She said, “What better time to practice than over the holidays. We can use an empty classroom if the teachers don’t mind.”

Professor Flitwick piped up, “You can use mine,” He squeaked, “All the objects needed for first year enchantments are in a cupboard behind my desk.”

“Perfect,” Holly said, lending a smile to the two first-years, “Would you like to start tomorrow after breakfast?” They both nodded in agreement.

“Wonderful, wonderful, now Minerva as I was saying…” Professor Dumbledore and the rest of the company finished their dinner and dessert, and slowly they group left the table in pairs or singularly. Holly and Draco excused themselves and started to follow the two first years out of the Great Hall.

“Thank you again Holly, I’m looking forward to tomorrow,” Miranda Tate said to Holly. Miranda smiled at Justin McCormack as he walked past but he ignored her and made his way down to the Slytherin common room. Holly and Draco saw as Miranda’s hopeful face crashed down into a look of sadness.

“Oh don’t worry about him,” Draco told her, “I’ll talk to him tonight about his treatment of Gryffindors.” Miranda blushed slightly when Draco talked to her and giggled. Holly rolled her eyes as Draco wished her a good night’s sleep and as she tripped slightly as she went up the stairs.

“You’re a menace you know that right? Now she’ll be dreaming of the handsome sixth year who bid her goodnight.” Holly winked at Draco, teasingly.

“Ah well, as long as she thinks about that and now how rude McCormack was I’ll sleep happy.” Draco replied. “Now, it’s time for your present. Come with me.” Draco led Holly up flights and flights of stairs until they were in a seventh floor corridor facing a blank wall. Holly looked at Draco questioningly.

“Close your eyes and hold my hand,” Draco said extending his arm. Holly clasped his hand, winding his fingers with hers and closed her eyes. “Now open them” Draco’s voice said.

Holly opened her eyes and saw that the blank wall had suddenly sprouted a wooden door. Draco opened the door and led her inside. The room reminded Holly of a grand living room; complete with comfy couches, a roaring fire, bookcases, and a coffee table.

“What is this place?” Holly asked.

“It’s the Room of Requirement,” Draco replied, “If you wish for something, besides food, it will give it to you. I thought it was a more comfortable place to exchange gifts than some cold classroom or hallways.”

“It’s wonderful!” Holly exclaimed, “So, if I thought ‘I need a bathroom’ it would-“ The room shifted so suddenly where there used to be a bookcase, was now a door to a bathroom complete with shower and  bath. Holly’s eyes grew wide at the amazing magic. Draco led her to a loveseat and withdrew a small wrapped box from his pocket. He placed it in Holly’s hands and told her to open it.

“Oh Draco, it’s beautiful!” Inside the box was a small necklace. Silver and gold delicate chains intertwined their way in a loop. At the bottom of the necklace was a pendant of a heart in both silver and gold metals. Silver and Gold. Slytherin and Gryffindor. Draco and Holly.

Holly turned around so Draco could fasten the necklace on her neck. His hands held her shoulders after he was done and turned her gently towards him. He leaned in and softly kissed her lips. Holly melted into him, surrendering herself to his touch. After a few moments she pulled away, eager to give Draco her present. She pulled out her wand and tapped his hand. A box appeared, similar in size to the one he had given her. He opened it and his eyes lit up when he saw what was inside. He withdrew a silver ring, engraved with a symbol of a dragon. The initials DM were inscribed in the body of the dragon for Draco Malfoy.

Draco looked up at Holly and was speechless. “T-This is amazing” Holly smiled and leaned in for another kiss. They spent the rest of the day cuddled on the couch in front of the fire, talking about their pasts, wildest desires and what they wanted to achieve in the future. Draco opened up to Holly about his dad’s arrest. It was a major shock for him to go from being part of a respected family to one lower than Squibs because of his father’s crimes. Holly eventually fell asleep curled up to Draco on the couch. He thought of a blanket and one appeared next to him. Draco pulled it over Holly’s figure and kissed her forehead, sending tingles down her spine. That was the last thing she could remember before she drifted into nothingness.
