Don't Get Too Close // Liam Payne AU

They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

5. The Closet

~Don't Get Too Close~ The Closet

"Happy Friday everyone! It's good to see that you all remembered to come to the computer lab today." Mr. Matthews smiled. He gave us instructions on what we were going to do today in our first lab, then he let us get to work.

Liam sat next to me. I really don't know why though. If he hates me so much, he wouldn't sit next to me right? But yet, he still continues to do so. It's like he's asking me to bother him. I rolled my eyes at the thought.

I turned to look at him. He continued to type away on his computer. I noticed him glance at me out of the corner of his eye, and I got prepared for a battle. Mentally of course.

He sighed loudly, "Are you looking to start something?" he questioned.

"Now that you mention it, I am," I smiled. He rolled his eyes and continued to type away on him keyboard. "If you hate me so much, why do you still continue to sit next to me?" I asked. Maybe deep down inside he really does want to be around me.

The little voice piped in, 'I seriously doubt that. It's only the first week of school and you've already made an enemy. Congratulations.' it snickered.

"Shut up!" I retorted.

Liam looked at me funny, "I didn't say anything to you." he said, glaring at me now. I just said that out loud. Great, now I'm irritating and a lunatic.

I rolled my eyes, "Are you going to answer my question?" I ask. Liam stopped typing and looked over at me.

"Will you stop asking me questions if I answer you?" he asked.

I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know. I guess it depends on your answer." I smiled. For once, since I've met Liam, he actually smiled. He has such a beautiful smile. Seeing it made those butterflies come back up into my stomach, making me smile more. Sadly, his smile quickly faded away.

He sighed and shrugged his shoulders, "Because I want to," he stated simply. I was kind of shocked by his answer. Scratch that. More like extremely shocked by his answer. 'Ha! Take that bitch' I thought to the little voice in my head. I felt my eyebrows furrow as I stared at him, confused.

"What?" he asked.

"You hate me. Why would you want to be near someone you hate?"

"I don't hate you," he said pausing for a moment. "I don't particularly like you, but I can tolerate you. You irritate the shit out of me and you are a grade-A in my ass, but I'd rather be sitting here next to you than anywhere else." he said. My eyes widened in surprise. I was shocked. Why was he being so nice to me all of a sudden? It doesn't matter. It wont last long.

Liam smiled, "Why do you look so..." he said trailing off, trying to find the right words.

"Shocked?" I asked, completing his sentence.

He laughed, "Yeah, shocked." he said. This was the first time I ever heard him laugh. It was the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. It made more and more butterflies come up into my stomach, making my giggle along with him.

I laughed, "Well, because you just complimented and insulted me in the same sentence. I don't know whether to feel hurt or flattered."

He smiled, "Feel flattered." he said. I couldn't help but blush. I turned away from him, trying to hide my face.

"Guys, back to work." Mr. Matthews says as he walks by us. Liam and I both smile at each other before turning our attention back to our work.

"Alright class, that's it for today. We'll work on this more next Friday. Have a great weekend and I'll see you guys Monday!" Mr. Matthews announced and dismissed the class. Liam stood from his chair and quickly walked out of the room. I knew it was too good to be true. He's back to his usual self again. I sighed, picked up my things and headed out the door.

I spotted Liam, not to far down the hallway. I decided to quickly catch up to him.

"Liam!" I called, walking a little faster to keep up with his long strides. He looked back at me and rolled his eyes.

"What?" he asked. I could sense the hostility in his voice.

I looked up at him, confusion written all over my face, "What happened? One minute we're having a decent conversation, and then the next minute you're giving me the cold shoulder. I don't understand you."

He scratched his eyebrow roughly, continuing to walk, "Please leave me alone. I don't want you to get hurt."

I narrowed my eyes at him and shook my head, "What are you talking about?" I asked.

He stopped abruptly and turned towards me, "I don't want to get too close to you. Now please, leave me alone, and stay away from me."

"If it has to do with that boy that hurt you the other day..." I stated, but was cut off.

"No, it has nothing to do with Louis. Please, I don't want to explain this to you. Just take my advice and stay away from me."

"Payne!" a familiar high pitched voice yelled. It was Louis. I watched as Liam's eyes widened. Liam grabbed my upper arm and started to pull me. I pulled my arm out of his grip.

"You just told me to stay away from you, and now you want me to follow you?" I asked.

"Just please, c'mon." he said frantically. He took my hand and quickly pulled me down the hallway, and out of the building.

"Get back here Payne!" I heard Louis yell as we ran into another building. We ran down a hallway, and Liam slowed down, stopping in front of a door.

"In here!" Liam said and opened the door. I hurried into the small, dark space and Liam quickly followed, shutting the door behind him.

"Liam why..."

"Shhh," Liam said. He quickly pulled me close to him, and held his hand over my mouth. "You have to stay quiet." he whispered. I could feel his heart racing. It pounded against his chest. My own heart was racing; not just because I just sprinted for my life, but because Liam was holding me so close to him. I started to panic as I felt my anxiety fill the small space we were stuck in. I just need to stay calm and everything will be alright.

I took a few deep breaths to calm myself down a little bit.

"Payne! I know you're here!" Louis' voice rang through the halls, and it made me jump. Liam wrapped his free hand around my waist, pulling me closer to him, ensuring that I wouldn't move and accidentally make a noise.

"It's okay. He wont hurt you." Liam whispered. I really wasn't going to stay calm now. My heart continued to race, making my breathing grow rapid and shallow. My hands grew clammy, and they started to shake. If I don't get away from him, and out of here now, I might pass out.

"Payne! You and your girlfriend cant hide for long!" Louis screeched. I heard his quick footsteps echo as he ran past the door and down the hallway. I let out a breath that I didn't realize I was holding, but then I remembered the other problem I had at hand.

I started to squirm to get out of his grip. I just wanted to get away from him, and out of this God damn room.

"Julina, stop trying to get away from me!" a husky voice yelled. Strong hands pulled me towards this unknown figure of a man. His hot breath traveled down my neck, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand up straight.

"No, stop! Don't touch me!" I yelled, and tried to pull myself away from the man.

"Julina," Liam's soft voice whispered. "What's wrong? I'm not going to hurt you," he said. I couldn't take it anymore. I ripped his hands off me and turned around to face him. I backed up quickly, but didn't get very far since it was a small room. Tears pricked at my eyes as I backed up against the door, making my panic attack go into full effect.

Liam walked a little closer to me, "Julina, what's wrong? Did I do something?" he asked.

"No just stop! Stay away from me!" I yelled. Liam stepped back and put his hands up in defense.

Liam laughed lightly, "My, how the tables have turned."

"D-don't laugh at me." I stuttered, calming down a little bit.

Liam cleared his throat, and turned more serious, "I'm not laughing at you. Are you alright?"

"I'm f-fine," I stated a little more harsher than I wanted. "Can w-we just go n-now?"

"Yeah," Liam said. He walked slowly in my direction. I moved out of his way so that he could open the door. "The coast is clear." he said. He opened the door and walked out. I followed him out, and quickly took a deep breath. I put my hands on my knees and filled my body with as much fresh air as I possibly could.

"What, were you suffocating?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

I nodded my head, "Yeah, something like that." I reply. I quickly stand up straight and look at him. "Where were we hiding anyway?"

"Every time Louis comes after me, I hid here." he said and shut the door.

I read the sign, "A janitor's closet?" I asked.

"Yup." he said popping the 'p'.

I bite my lip to stifle my giggle, "Classic hiding spot."

"Yeah, I guess," Liam laughed. We both looked at each other and smiled. I've never seen Liam this happy. The butterflies quickly returned, tickling my stomach, making me smile more.

Liam's smile turned into a frown, causing him to look away from me, "I'm sorry Julina. I don't want to keep hurting you like this. Please leave me alone." he said, then quickly disappeared down the hallway.

I couldn't understand him. One minute he's happy and laughing with me, then the next minute he's trying to get away from me. It was too much for my brain to handle.

"Earth to Julina!" Niall said, waving his hand in front of my face. I snapped out of my daydream and focused my attention on Niall. We were hanging out in the library again.

"W-what?" I asked.

"Did you not hear anything I just said?"

"No," I said, shaking my head. "I'm sorry Niall. There's just a lot going through my head right now." I said, rubbing my forehead.

"What's wrong?" he asked, leaning in a little closer to me.

I sighed, "Do you remember the guy I was fighting with?"

"Yeah, what about him? Is he bothering you?" Niall asked; his facial expression turning more angry.

"He's bothering me, just not in the way you think he is."

Niall eyed me with a curious look, "Care to explain?"

I shrugged, "It's just, one minute he's happy and then the next he's a jerk. He just confuses me so much." I sighed and continued, "He keeps telling me to stay away from him, but I don't know why."

"Have you thought that he is just trying to scare you away from him?"

"I did, but it doesn't make any sense. It's like he wants to be around me, but he's trying so hard to push me away."

"Julina, I'm gonna say this because I love you and you're a sister to me. I think you should stay away from him. I think it's pretty obvious that he is hiding something from you, and you might get hurt. God help him if he hurts you. I will kill him slowly and painfully." Niall said with no humor left in his voice. He was dead serious, and I knew he wasn't kidding.

"I guess you're right." I sighed. I felt a vibration from my pocket. I pulled out my phone and noticed a text from 'The most AMAZING girl ever :D'

I rolled my eyes and smiled at my phone.

I sent the message and looked up at Niall.

I smiled, "It's Analeigh, one of my new friends."

Niall frowned playfully, "Oh I see. I understand." he said and laughed.

I smiled, "No one could ever replace you." I said and my phone vibrated again.

"She's in my Child Development and Psychology classes. She's the one that invited me to the fair"

"So I'm gonna meet her?" Niall asked, sounding pleased.

"Yup! Her and like three other people. I don't know who the three other people are though." I said.

"Is your mom okay with it?"

"Yeah, last night after you left, I asked her if I could go and she was fine with it."

"Tomorrow should be a lot of fun then." Niall said and smiled.

"Yup! I cant wait!" I said smiling back.
