Don't Get Too Close // Liam Payne AU

They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

Don’t Get Too Close~ Memory Lane

The car ride with Niall was long and painful. I know he knew what I did, and the fact that he wasn’t talking to me made it worse. I stared out the window, watching the trees and houses fly by as we drove down the long, almost unfamiliar country road. Something about this road was familiar though; almost like I had been down it a million times before. Honestly, right now there’s so much going through my head, I’m surprised I can remember my own name. That’s a little bit of an exaggeration, but I think I made my point.

Soon enough we turned down another road, leading us down into the woods. I really didn’t know where we were going. Nothing around us looked familiar.

“Niall, you’re not going to kill me and leave me in the woods are you?” I asked.

He laughed, “No. Do you not know where you are?” he asked, looking over me then back to the road.

I shook my head, “No, not really,” I said. We eventually made it to an old wooden cabin surrounded by trees. It was so beautiful and peaceful out here. “Where are we?” I asked, astounded by the beauty of this place.

“You really don’t know?” he asked as he parked the car. I shook my head and stepped out of the car, shutting the door behind me. “This is the camp we used to come to all the time remember? With our families?” he said and he came around the car to stand next to me, admiring the place.

A sudden rush of memories came over me. They were all pleasant memories, which improved my mood tremendously. I smiled, remembering all the crazy things Niall and I did as kids. He took my hand and led me over to the small lake near the cabin. “Remember how we would run off the dock that used to be here into the water? How we would do flips into the water and our moms always yelled at us and told us not too?” Niall asked, looking out at the lake.

I nodded and smiled at the memory, “We had a lot of great times here.” I said as I looked around. I noticed the tree that my brother Jared fell by as he chased us, making Niall and I laugh our asses off. I noticed the tire swing laying on the ground. Niall, Jared, and I decided to all swing on it at the same time which wasn’t a good idea. It ended up breaking, and our parents got so mad at us. My father always said he would put it back up, but that never happened. I noticed the two rocking chairs on the front porch. “Niall, look!” I said and ran up to them, with Niall close behind me. “Do you remember how we used to climb on top of these and pretend they were horses?” I asked and laughed.

“Yeah, I remember how we would both be cowboys and ride them into the sunset. I remember getting so into cowboys and horses,” he said, pausing for a moment. He smiled and looked towards me, “Remember that one movie we watched that had to do with a cowboy and a pretty lady who was in trouble, and how we would act it out afterwards? I remember having to save a pretty little lady from a bad man,” He said and laughed. I looked up at him with a small smile, then back to the chairs. I could feel his eyes on me, “What?” he asked.

I sighed and turned away from the chairs. I couldn’t look at them anymore nor did I want to. I walked over to the railings on the porch and leaned up against them, staring out at the lake in the distance, “I wish someone saved me from the bad man.” I said, turning my attention to my knotted hands.

“Julina,” Niall said quietly. He walked over next to me and put an arm around my shoulders, “He won’t ever hurt you again.” He said before trapping me in a bear hug. “Julina, I love you. You are my best friend, and I won’t let anyone hurt you ever again. I promise.”

He let me out of the hug and I looked up at him, “Don’t make promises you can’t keep Niall.” I said before leaning up against the railing again, looking at the water, then to my hands, “That’s probably the hardest promise to keep because this whole world is full of hurt. I’m always going to be hurt by someone, and there’s no way that you can try to stop that.” I said. I felt as he placed his hands on my shoulders and pulled me off the railing. I turned around to face him. At first, he didn’t say anything. His hands traveled down to my wrists, holding on to my left wrist. He pushed up the sleeve of my jacket, exposing my cuts. I turned away from him; I couldn’t bare the disappointed look on his face that was sure to come. I felt as he lightly traced each cut with his finger, humming as he did so.

“I’m a mistake.” I said as he traced the first cut. He stopped humming and said something that almost made me cry.

“You’re a beautiful mistake.” Niall whispered to me. I felt as he traced the second cut.

“I’m never good enough.” I mumbled, tears threatening to run down my cheeks.

“Beautiful mistakes don’t have to be good enough.” He whispered quietly again. As he traced the third cut, I looked up at him; disappointment wasn’t in his eyes. His eyes were very caring when he looked at my cuts. “Everything was my fault.” I whispered, letting the tears roll down my cheeks.

Niall chuckled lightly, “You always blame yourself for doing wrong to others, when the truth is,” he said pausing for a moment, “It’s others that do wrong to you.”

I couldn’t help the tears flowing down my cheeks. I was so overwhelmed by the possibility that he could be mad or disappointed in me. I was so afraid that he would have scolded me or tell me how wrong I was for self-harming myself, but he didn’t. He was so genuinely loving and caring. I wrapped my arms around his torso, squeezing him. He wrapped his arms around my shoulders, engulfing me in a hug.

"Julina, I want you to talk to me when things get difficult for you. I want to try and help pull you out of that dark place. I wont ever judge you, and you know that. Please don’t lie to me anymore. You can tell me anything at anytime." he said before letting me go. He placed his hand on my back and rubbed in a circle.

I looked up at him and smiled. It was the kind of smile to say "you're the most amazing person in the world, and I wouldn’t trade you for anyone." I wiped the tears away and leaned up against the porch railings.

Slowly, Niall did the same, "I feel bad for making you miss out on the fair." he said before folding his arms across his chest.

I shook my head, "Don't feel bad. Something bad would've happened anyway." I said.

"What's with being so negative today?" he smiled and nudged me gently. I giggled and we were silent for a minute or two. My eyes went wide when I thought of a perfect idea.

"Niall, what if we invite them here? Like to the cabin?" I said, smiling wide at him. I'm praying that he'll like the idea.

Niall's lips pressed into a flat line, making his eyebrows furrow, "I don’t know if that’s such a good idea." he said.

My smile quickly turned to a frown, "Why not?"

"Well, I just didn’t think they would," he said, but I cut him off.

"But it would be fun!" I said with a smile that went from ear to ear. Niall shook his head at me before giving in.

He sighed, "Alright, fine."

"Yes!" I squealed, jumping up and down in the process. I hugged Niall tightly, "Thank you! This is going to be so much fun!" I said. I was so excited for the little get together. This could really get my mind off of everything that happened this morning.

"We don’t have anything here though, Julina. No food, and no drinks."

"What if we went out to get all of that?" I asked.

Niall nodded, "How about I go and get the supplies, and you get the house ready. I'm sure there's some old decorations in there somewhere."

"Okay, sounds good." I said. Niall grabbed his car keys out of his pocket, and headed for his car.

"I should be back in about an hour or two." he said and hopped in his car. I stood there and waved goodbye until he couldn’t be seen anymore. I sighed, knowing I had a lot of work to do to get this place ready for guests. I went inside the cabin and started with dusting off all the wooden surfaces. I opened up the windows to let some fresh air in. I pulled off the white sheets on the couches, and made sure all the beds were neat and tidy.

After one allergy pill, several spiders squished, and two hands worked to the bone, the cabin was ready to be used for tonight. I searched around the cabin for the decorations Niall was talking about, but couldn’t seem to find them. They were probably up in the attic, and I wasn’t going to go up there. Niall will have to get them when he comes back.

While I was looking for the decorations, I found a radio. I brought it out, dusted it off, and placed it on the counter. I turned it on and found the normal station that I like. They were playing this really good song that I've heard a few times. It was something about the story of his life and of course its about a girl. It's really catchy.

I decided to call Analeigh to tell her about the new plans. I really hope she wants to come over with her friends. I dialed her number and waited for her to pick up.

"Hello?" she said.

"Hey Analeigh!"

"Oh, hey Julina! Where are you? We were supposed to meet at noon."

I sighed, "I know. Uh, some things came up this morning and we wont be able to make it." I said, and I could hear her sigh.

"Aw! Well this sucks. I was looking forward to you meeting my two friends." she said, disappointed.

"I still can." I said.

"I was thinking you three could come to this cabin that my family comes to all the time, and we could have our own little get together. What do you think?" I asked.

"I like the idea! Hold on, I'll ask the boys," she said. I could hear faint whispers coming from the other end of the phone. Everything sounded like it was going well. "They like the idea too! Do you want us to bring anything? Food, drinks?"

"I think we got the food covered, but if you want alcoholic drinks, you would have to bring that."

"Alright! Text me the address and I'll put it in the GPS."

"Okay! See you soon then!" I said. We bid our goodbyes and hung up the phone. I gave her the address, and waited for Niall to come back.

Not long after I called Analeigh, I heard a car coming up the driveway. I watched from the window as Niall got out of the car, and turned to go to the trunk. I ran outside to help him carry everything in.

"Hey, I got a lot of things for tonight." Niall said as he carried a handful of bags into the cabin. I grabbed a few bags and brought them inside. I started unpacking the bags, placing everything in its designated area. Niall brought in the last of the bags and helped me put everything away.

"I got chips, dip, soda, some frozen items, and other snacks," he said as he pulled all the items out of a bag. "Oh and I took some alcohol from home." he said, and chucked lightly.

I laughed, "Alright! This party is going to be great!"
