Don't Get Too Close // Liam Payne AU

They say it's what you make
I say it's up to fate
It's woven in my soul
I need to let you go

Your eyes, they shine so bright
I wanna save that light
I can't escape this now
Unless you show me how

When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide
Don't get too close
It's dark inside
It's where my demons hide
It's where my demons hide

3. Just Leave Me Alone

~Don‘t Get Too Close~ Just Leave me Alone

Today was going to be another long day. I didn’t have class until two, so I decided to waste my time at the library. I sat down in a chair and pulled out a book that I had been reading called “The Lucky One” by Nicholas Sparks. He is one of my all-time favorite authors. I got comfortable and started reading.

Every time the doors would open to the library, I would look up, hoping to see one person walk in.
Liam.

But time and time again, it was someone else. I wanted to know if he was okay. I wanted to know that he wasn’t hurt, and that he wasn’t in trouble. It would kill me if he was in trouble because of me. Even though he was the biggest jerk to me yesterday; somewhere deep down inside I know that I do care about him. I shook the thought away. I buried my nose in my book again, and continued to read.

Not long after, the doors opened again and I spotted Liam walking into the library. I watched as he sat down at a table not too far from where I was sitting. I put my book down and got up, walking over to him. He looked up and saw me coming. He rolled his eyes and stood up from his seat. He walked away hastily; his long strides leaving me in the dust.

“Liam, wait!” I called as I walked a little faster to compete with his strides. He ignored me and continued to walk away from me. When you ignore someone, it’s never a good sign. This made me grow a little more worried. “Liam stop. I want to talk to you.” I called again. I finally caught up to him and tugged at his arm. He suddenly stopped and spun around to face me. When his eyes met mine, I felt that spark again. Why does that keep coming up?

“What?” he snapped, his eyes dark with anger. I was taken back a bit by his sudden hostility towards me.

“W-what happened?” I asked. It was all I could say. I was still surprised by his hostility.

He looked up towards the ceiling, giving it that ‘why me’ look. He looked back down at me and glared, “What the hell do you think happened? I got in trouble because of you,” he spat. Those were the words that I didn’t want to hear. They literally tore me to pieces. He ran his hands through his hair and down over his face, “You know what, don’t ever talk to me again. Leave me alone.” he growled and started to walk away.

“Hey wait,” I said and tugged at his arm again. “How was that my fault?” I asked. I already knew the answer, I just wanted to hear it from him. I think it just made him angrier though.

“Are you kidding me right now? How was it your fault?” he snapped as he turned around again. “If you had just kept your nose in your own business and not have gotten involved, I wouldn’t of had to attack him for putting his grimy hands on you. Now leave me alone.” he said and started to walk away again.

“Seriously Liam? Can you stop trying to walk away from me?” I asked agitated.

He rolled his eyes and stopped walking, “What part of leave me alone do you not understand?”

“I understand that you want me to leave you alone, but I don’t understand why you’re so mad at me. I tried to help you. What did you want me to do? Sit there and watch him hurt you like that?”

“Yes! For the love of God, yes! I wanted you to walk away like everyone else always does! If you did, he would be the only one in trouble right now!” he yelled.

I rubbed my forehead, “All I wanted to do is help you.”

“You helped me get into trouble. Thanks, I really appreciate it.” he said sarcastically. I rolled my eyes at him. I wasn’t going to let his remarks get the best of me. Not just yet anyway.

I shrugged my shoulders, “I-I’m sorry.”

“Like I said before, I don’t want or need your pity. Quite frankly, I don’t want you to help me either. I don’t need help from you or anyone for that matter,” he looked at me and sighed heavily, rolling his eyes. “You’re doing it again.” he said, aggravated. I cocked an eyebrow at him. He made a circle around his face and I automatically changed my expression to a more pissed off one. I have been nothing but nice to him this whole time and he just treats me like shit.

“You know what Liam, If I didn’t care about you, I wouldn’t have helped you. I have been nothing but nice to you this whole entire time and you treat me like shit! It’s not surprising that people always walk out on you. They probably don’t want to deal with your shit!” I yelled. I looked around the library. A few people were staring at us now, enjoying the little show we were putting on for them. I looked back up at Liam, “Why do you push away people that might actually care about you?”

“It’s easier that way.” he snapped.

“How is it easier that way?” I questioned.

He shook his head, “I’m done with this conversation. Leave me alone.”

“Just answer the question!” I snapped. I watched as he balled his fists, making his knuckles turn white. I was afraid of him, thinking he could crack and really hurt me.

He got in my face, glaring at me, “Because it hurts less. Now leave me the fuck alone.” he growled. I felt a hand on my shoulder, pulling me away from him.

“Woah man, back off.” Niall growled, stepping in between Liam and I. Liam glared at me, then at Niall.

“Gladly.” he said before turning and walking away, leaving the library.

Niall turned around and placed both his hands on my shoulders, “Hey, are you alright?” he asked. I didn’t say anything. I just nodded. “Who was that and why were you two yelling at each other?”

I sighed, “That’s Liam. I met him yesterday in my English class. I tried to help him and it just kind of spiraled out of control, but I’m okay. Don’t worry about it.” I said. Niall thought about saying something, but decided against it.

“You want to come sit with me?” he asked.

“Yeah.” I said. I grabbed my stuff from where I was sitting before, and we went to sit down at a table in the middle of the library.

“So, you met that guy yesterday? That’s impressive.” he said, smiling at me.

I rolled my eyes at him, “You act like it’s not an everyday thing.”

“For you, it’s rare.”

“Yeah, yeah. Well, don’t get your hopes up. I don’t think I will be talking to him anytime soon.” I said putting my elbows on the table so I could put my head in my hands.

“Why not? You guys looked like best friends not too long ago.” he said sarcastically. I watched as he took out a notebook and a pen.

“Very funny. What are you doing?” I asked.

“My college form teacher wants us to make a list of our best study strategies.”

I laughed, “You. Study? That’s funny.”

“I know. I’m going to be sitting here all day trying to find a good strategy.” he laughed.

“Well you do that. I have to run to my Psychology class. See you tomorrow?” I ask as I get up from my chair.

“Yeah. I’ll text you or something.” he said and smiled. I nodded and walked out of the library. My Psychology class was close to the library, so it wasn’t much of a walk.

“Hey!” a high pitched voice said from next to me as I walked. I looked around to see a girl looking at me.

“Hi. I’m sorry do I know you?”

“Oh, I’m in your Child Development class. Don’t you remember me?” she asked. I looked at her for a moment. If I wasn’t so focused on Liam, I probably would have remembered her.

I shook my head, “No, I’m sorry. I was so distracted yesterday.” I said.

“It’s alright. Here, let me jog your memory. I sat next to you yesterday?” she asked, trying to jog my memory. It actually helped me remember.

“Right! Yeah, I remember now. What’s your name again?”

“Analeigh. Analeigh Porter.” she said holding her hand out.

I shook her hand, “Nice to meet you. I’m Julina,” I said. I let go of her hand and continued to walk. “So, where are you going?” I ask.

“Oh, I’m heading to my Psychology class. How about you?”

“I am too.”

“Really?! Who’s your professor?” she asked as a big smile crept across her face.

“Professor Parker.”

“No way! That’s my professor too! We have the same class!” she cheered; her smile growing wider.

I smiled, “Awesome!” I said.

“Sit with me?”

I nodded, “Yeah. Sure.”
~~~
When I got home, I went into the living room to watch TV. It had been a long day, and watching TV was a great way for me to unwind. I watched a re-run of Teen Wolf. I was barely paying attention to the TV. I was more focused on the little fight I had today with Liam. There were definitely things I shouldn’t have said to him. He may have been rude to me, but I wasn’t going to stoop down to his level and be rude back to him. I decided I was going to apologize to him tomorrow in English. That is, if he listens to me.
