2. Change is Good

Chapter one: Change is Good

"When is he going to be here?" Erin asked. I looked over at her.  Her stick straight, strawberry-blonde hair was dangling, almost hitting the ground.

"Anytime now." I said. There wasn't much enthusiasm in my voice. Erin could tell

"Oh get over it!" She said. I looked angrily at her. She rolled her eyes in response. “I’d just give up. You've been in the friend zone for three years."

"But I really like him... ugh!" I groaned putting my face in my hands.

"I know, I know." She said to me. Her eyes showed sympathy. There was a honk outside. “I guess that's him." She sat up and glanced out the window "yeah it's him."

I grabbed my purple Columbia jacket and went out the door. Grayson was sitting in his dark blue Volvo, looking in the mirror picking up his teeth. I opened the car door and Grayson jumped and shut the mirror. I laughed at him.

"Shut up!" He said. "I wanted to make sure I look nice."

"You do for once! Look at that plaid shirt! Except your collar is messed up, bad." I reached over to straighten up his shirt. He looked up at me with his light blue eyes and smiled.

"Thank you!" He said. "Oh by the way" he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small box.

"Happy friendaversery." He shouted, handing me the box. Oh my God, I thought I can't believe I am this far in the friend zone. I mean friendaversery! Guys shouldn't do stuff like that!

"Thanks." I said. I hope in the box to find a silver necklace with an infinity symbol on it. "Grayson! It's so pretty."

"Anything for you, Mel." He said with a smile on his face. I reached over and hugged him tight. "Here, let me put it on you." I turned around and he put the necklace on me.

"Is it that hypoallergenic metal stuff? Because you know I will break out and stuff!" I asked. "It’s not pretty, you’ve seen it"

"No, it's real silver." He said very nonchalantly. My jaw dropped, I turned around to look at him.

"It's what?!?"

"You heard me, real silver."

"I'll tell you later." He said smirking.

"Wow." I said sulking. "Now my present looks like crap."

"Let me see it!” he shouts excitedly.

"Fine." I grabbed my Columbia jacket off the floor, unzipped the pocket and grabbed his present. I held a $25 iTunes card and woven hemp bracelet I made. He took it from my hands. He tossed the iTunes card in his glove box then held the bracelet next to the light.

“I love it." He said.

"You do?"

"Of course! Did you make it?"

"Uh huh." I said. I was completely surprised he liked it. He turned towards me and hugged me.

"Thank you so much!"

"Yours is still better." I mumbled so Grayson wouldn't hear me. He still heard me then he rolled his eyes.

"Olive Garden ahoy!" he put his car in reverse and backed out of the driveway.

"This way please." Our waiter said. We sat in a booth in the back of the restaurant. I tall muscly boy with short curly brown hair came over.

"What can I start you off with?" He asked, his caramel eyes observing us closely and when I say caramel brown eyes I mean it. They were the exact color of caramel. They were almost hypnotic how vibrant they were.

"The salad and breadsticks of course." Grayson said.

"Drinks? Any other appetizers?"

"I’ll have an iced tea." I said.

"I'll have a Mountain Dew." Grayson said. "No appetizer."

"I'll be back with your drinks, salad, and breadsticks." He walked off. When he was out of listening range I leaned over the table.

"Now why are you doing all this today?" I asked trying to observe his reaction to my question.

"What do you mean?" he asked nonchalantly when he knew what I was talking about. I sighed out of exasperation, I hate stalling.

"The necklace, Olive Garden, plaid shirt, picking stuff out of your teeth?" I listed while making hand gestures and pointing at stuff.

All of a sudden his face got pale and he messed around with the collar of his shirt. "Well, you see I…" he paused, looking at the ceiling.”Um…” just then the waiter comes by and drops off our salad, drinks and breadsticks. “Thank you” Grayson said as the waiter walked away. He turned to me, a fake, nervous smile on his face. “Would you like me to serve you up some salad?”

“Grayson! Quit stalling!” I snapped angrily.

He fiddled with his fingers and sighed. “Sorry, it’s just kind of hard for me to tell you this…”

“Oh my gosh, what did you do? Are you dying? Did you crash your car into the neighbor’s car again because last time we had to-“

“Melanie!” he said sharply, cutting me off. “Just listen.” I shut up immediately and he looked right into my eyes... “I’ve kept this from you for a long time…” he paused and I took the opportunity to sip my drink real quick, not breaking eye contact with those light blue eyes.

“Ever since I met you, I’ve liked you.” I choked on my tea a little bit but tried to push it off as I listened to him more intently than I did before. “You make me happy, whether you know it or not and It took me until recently to realize something.” My stomach was doing flip-flops because of me just thinking of what he might say next. “Well, I lied, I didn’t realize it. My friend pointed it out actually. I have absolutely THROWN you into the friend zone.”

As I waited for his pause to end I quirked my lip to the side, like I always do when I’m thinking or impatient. He sighed with a nervous quiver hiding in his breathing then he continued. “I want to let you know that I don’t think of you that way.” He looked me straight in the eyes as I held my breathe.

“Melanie, I love you.”

We pulled up to my house and I mentally sighed to myself. I didn’t want that night to end! I have never felt a combination of happiness and relief like that. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t wipe that stupid grin off my face. Grayson got out of the car and walked around to my side then opened my door for me. He grabbed my hand and walked me to my front porch.

“Thanks for tonight” I said. “I had fun.”

“Anytime, because I had fun too.” Grayson said a smile on his face. He leaned over slowly and kissed me on the cheek. “Goodnight babe.”

“G’night. “ I said looking at my feet. I hadn’t been that shy around Grayson in my life.

He let go of my hand and walked towards his car. I sighed and walked inside of my house. My house is pretty nice given the fact that I have a single mom. We used to be poor but then my mom went to a culinary college, opened a bakery and really started focusing on life. After mom opened the bakery it was super successful. As a result she opened another and another and before you knew it we had thirteen thriving bakeries in our tri-state area. It’s pretty nice if you ask me.

I ran upstairs and barged into Erin’s room. I was pretty obnoxious about coming into her room so I was surprised when she didn’t turn around. I observed her a little more carefully and noticed that she had her headphones in and she was focused on her science textbook. I sneaked up behind her then violently shook her shoulders. She jumped up from being startled then fell off her chair.

“Melanie!” she yelled angrily. ”what the hell do you thing you’re doing?”

“Surprising you.” I stated very matter-of-factly.

“You son of a-“

“Stop!” I shouted. She looked at me, still on the floor, and raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you going to ask me how it went?”

Erin stood up then sat in her desk chair. She looked at me impatiently. “How’d it go?”

“Fantastic? Really? Why is that?” she asked with an overly sarcastic tone in her voice.

“Quit being annoyed for me scaring you off your chair and listen” I said impatiently. She sat waiting for me to talk and tapping her toe. “He told me he loves me”

She stopped tapping her toe and her jaw dropped. “He said what?”

“He said he loves me”

“Oh my god, what did you say?”

“I said that I love him too of course!”

“So is it official?”

“Yup, Grayson is my boyfriend.”

“Melanie Mae Davidson is dating a junior? Look at you go! That’s awesome!” she said smiling. “How does it feel?” she asked, nudging me with her elbow. “You know, being out of the friend zone?”

I flopped onto her bed closed my eyes and sighed out the words “unbelievably, amazing.”

“Yeah? I wish I knew that feeling.”

“Maybe you will! Don’t be so melodramatic.”  I said.

She glared at me, “yeah right! Jordan talks to me about his girlfriend! That’s the last thing you would talk about if you liked someone.”

“True, True, but keep your hopes up.”

“I’d rather not, keeping your hopes up will only give them the better chance of being knocked down.” Erin said. What she said was very true so I couldn’t really find anything to say. Erin broke the silence “ugh, we start school in two days!” she complained.

“I know!” I said “fall break ended too early.”

“Some schools don’t even get two week breaks in the fall, get over it.” She said then rolled her eyes.

“I know but it’s just a tease… my brain was all ‘yay! No school! Two whole weeks!’ but then next thing you know it’s over and it didn’t even feel like two weeks. Boom, it’s done and now my brain is all confused.” I rambled then just sat there.

“Yeah, I guess you’re right” Erin said. I don’t think she understood anything I said.

I heard someone coming up the stairs so we stopped talking and listened. Suddenly mom came in the room.

“Melanie honey, did you take your breathing treatment today yet?” she asked.

“No…” I sighed.

“Let’s go down to the kitchen and get that done, okay?”

“okay.” I said. Mentally I was complaining ant thinking God, I hate my stupid breathing treatment. Mom got out the medicine and the machine. The breathing treatments are to help my asthma. My asthma is really bad; it gets even worse when winter gets closer. Mom told me I got it from my dad but I have never met him. In high school he got in a car accident after my mom found out she was pregnant. Yeah, that’s right, I was a high school baby. My poor mom, it must have been really rough on her.

“Here’s the remote.” Mom said as I put the mask around my nose and mouth. “Thirty minutes, you know the drill.”

I turned the TV on to the news there was some stupid snickers commercial on and then the news started up. I always have to watch the weather because of how much it affects my asthma. Before the weather a reporter started interviewing this guy with curly brown hair and super vibrant caramel brown eyes. For some reason, he looked very familiar.

“Doctor Allenty, I’m Sarah Degreeves with the channel six news team. Will you please tell the viewers at home the amazing discovery you have made?”

“My research team and I have found a way to stop certain teens from having migraines as adults.” His deep voice says calmly.

“Very interesting.” She said. “And how do you do that?”

“Well it’s a long process that not everyone enjoys but it’s all worth it in the end when your kids won’t suffer from severe migraines.”

“You heard it here first folks, if your teen is having head ache problems send them down to Dr. Allenty’s seminar at four thirty p.m. tomorrow at the McGee center.” She finished. Screw this, I thought, I’m watching MTV.

Not long after I changed the channel mom made me go to bed because we had a banquet for my friend Autumn the next day. I was lying in bed when I remembered how I recognized the guy on the TV.

He was my waiter from olive garden earlier today.

Why would a doctor, need a side job as a waiter?
