"In Victorian-era Europe, a young boy loses everything he once held near and dear to a vicious plot. In his moment of death, he strikes a deal with a demon: his soul, in exchange for revenge. Ciel Phantomhive is now the head of the Phantomhive corporation, handling all business affairs as well as the underground work for the Queen of England. His new partner is a demon butler, Sebastian Michaelis, whose powers as a butler is only surpassed by his strength as a demon.

The story follows the two along with their other servants, as they work to unravel the plot behind Ciel's parents' murder, and the horrendous tragedies that befell Ciel in the month directly after."

This series took me a long time to watch considering the interruptions provided by schoolwork, but it was certainly worth it.

It is certainly, in my opinion, one of the best animes out there, with fascinating characters and an excellent storyline, which also allows for the inclusion of other side-stories.

And let's not forget the humour.

The story is set around the young Earl Phantomhive, Ciel Phantomhive. He is an aristocrat tasked with keeping the "Underworld" (in other words, the criminals) of the British Empire under control, and bears the nickname of the "Queen's Guard-Dog".

Everywhere the Earl goes he is accompanied by his Butler, Sebastian, who harbours supernatural abilities and is, in fact, a Demon (not much of a spoiler, in all honesty).

There are a number of recurring characters, such as Tanaka, Mei-Rin, Finny and Bart, who serve as the staff at Phantomhive Manor.

It is difficult to say a whole lot about the story without spoiling it, so I will jump to my favourite things about the series.

1: Sebastian is just glorious. He's the kind of guy you would want serving you. And that iconic line: "I am simply one hell of a butler."

2: The humour is amazing. In the later episodes things get a little darker, but they lighten up again a couple of times. The character of Grell (below) is certainly there for comedy.

3: The story is fantastic. You find yourself questioning the who, how and why, as well as being drawn into the events and caring for the characters.

Like Death Note, Black Butler is for those who like Supernatural and Mystery genres, but also for those who love comedic elements.

I find it hard to find any downsides to this series, though perhaps I could say that a few things get a little repetitive. Not so much as to detract from the experience, but enough to make you think: "Yeah, saw that coming."

My Rating: 4.5/5

Recommend? Without a doubt. The graphic novels are also worth reading, as they differ from the anime. If you love demons and supernatural mysteries in Victorian England, this is for you.
