3. The Accident

When I first awoke, I could see nothing but darkness. This darkness accompanied the coldness I felt in my heart. Why? Why was a feeling this way? And where was I? And then I shut my eyes again. And then it all came back. Everything. No. NO! It wasn't true. It must have been a dream. That explains the darkness.....But the abnormal chilliness of the air? My bedroom wasn't normally as cold as this... Where was that coming from? And then the blackness was gone, the darkness filled with brilliant light. The screech of tires on ice filled the silent air and a pair of luminous headlights were pointed straight at me. I squinted, as my eyes adjusted to the sudden change in lighting.

A quavering voice filled the icy air. "What in the world.....HELLO? ARE YOU ALRIGHT?" And then a sound of someone dialing phone. 'Hello? Yes, I'm 59th street, and there's a girl lying in the road. Yes. Yes, please come as fast as you can, she may be severely injured."

I could hear the crunch of the snow as this man approached me. "Hello?" In response, I let out a feeble groan, just realizing a searing pain spreading through my ribcage and my leg feeling as though it had been torn to pieces. "Oh god, Oh god!" I weakly opened my eyes again, to see an anxious looking face above mine. He was an elderly man, his good natured face was lined with wrinkles, and he had tear running down his worn cheek. "You're going to be alright." He said, as he slipped something soft under my head, wrapping me in a warm flannel blanket.

As I observed these things, a throbbing pain filled my head and for the second time that day, the frigid world went black.
