5. Surprise

A few days later, George still hadn't left my side, making sure I was alright, and keeping me entertained. I had tried not to think about his plans to marry Jessica, they were too painful, causing me even more pain than I was currently in.

It was late on Saturday evening as we sat together watching the glistening snow drift to the ground, when a thought occurred. "George?" I said softly. He turned to me, listening intently. "What happened the night I got hit? Where where you?" I asked. His face was full of sorrow as he said "You ran off, and I tried to chase after you but...but you were way too fast, and I lost you." He said it with such sincerity that I had to believe it was true. "And the man who rescued me? Who was he?" My head had been full of so many unanswered questions, the past few days, and they all suddenly seemed to come pouring out. George answered all my questions patiently. "The man who rescued you was plowing the streets when he found someone had hit you with their car. He called an ambulance and here we are. He's actually been here to check on you quite a few times, but you've always been asleep or with the doctors. Seems like a really nice man. His name's Rich I think...."

I nodded, thinking about how lucky I was that he happened to find me. Our conversation was interrupted by a serious doctor, with a concerned expression on his face. "Could I please speak with Elizabeth? Privately?" He asked. George nodded, and exited the room.

The doctor took a seat in the chair that George had just left. "Elizabeth," He said. "I'm afraid I have some rather grim news." My mind overflowed with questions. Was I not going to recover properly? What was the meaning of his visit? The doctor continued speaking. "I hate to be the one to tell you this....Especially around this time of year..." I made a quizzical expression, wondering where he was going. He sighed, as though he didn't know how to phrase what he was trying to say. He took a moment to gather his thoughts. "Because of the car accident, the tissue in your right leg is ripped beyond repair. You....you need to have your leg amputated."
