2. George's Surprise

George and I sat, gazing at the winter landscape. He turned to me, and took a great breath. "Liz, I know you've been feeling down lately and I thought you might like to hear this." He reached into his pocket, and grabbed a small, maroon-colored, velvet box. My heart stopped beating for a moment, and then began to beat as fast as a race horse. Was he proposing? My eyes fluttered shut. This was a dream come true. "Lizzy?" he asked. "Are you alright?" "Yes, yes," I said excitedly, my eyes opening again. "I'm alright." He still looked concerned, but carried on speaking. "You're the first person to hear this, so could you please keep it a secret? Please Lizzy?" This was a strange way to propose, I thought. But It's probably all part of a romantic plan. Yes, yes. That made sense.

"Lizzy, I'm planning on asking  Jessica to marry me! Isn't that absolutely wonderful!?"

A darkness I had never felt before filled my heart. He must be kidding. No. No it couldn't be true. I wouldn't have it. I looked up to see him positively beaming. The world seemed to stop spinning, the skaters seemed to freeze in place, The snow seemed to stopped falling. My heart seemed to collapse.

His ecstatic look faded away as I felt the blood drain from my face. "Liz!?" George shouted. But it only sounded like a soft whisper to me. I couldn't handle this. Not right now. I could vaguely hear George shouting my name behind me as a ran into the midst of the blizzard. I ran blindly, as long I could, the snow obscuring my vision. Suddenly, an earsplitting honk pierced through the silent storm. And then the entire world went black.
