3. Chapter 3

"Carnival!" I shouted for my dog.

"What the hell? Why are you so god damn loud?" My mom asks.

"I need to find her. Where is Carvel and Celestial?"

"I'm not sure. Probably sleeping."

"Don't you find it weird that every living thing in this house name's start with a C?"

"We obviously tried that. And we didn't name Carnival. You did."

"Carnival matches her though. It's happy, but yet it can sound mean."

"Carnival doesn't sound mean."

"It doesn't make you want to run in screaming terror?"

"It makes me want cotton candy."

"That does sound good."

"It's late. Reaping is tomorrow.  Go to sleep."

"Fine." I walk up the stairs dragging my feet. I hate Reaping Day. I have been chosen for the past two years. Luckily, someone has always volunteered in my place. Even though District Two is filled with volunteers and Careers, this year no male got the spot to volunteer. That means if I get picked, I will be in the Games.

Not that I have problem with it. I've always wanted to volunteer when I was eighteen. I am only fourteen. If I get chosen, which I have a feeling I will,I don't have a choice. Fourteen-year-olds usually don't win. There was Finnick O'Dair. My dad killed him in the third Quarter Quell. He won when he was fourteen. I watched the Games he was in. I am way better. I can use any weapon. Maybe I do have a chance.

The next morning I hopped out of bed. I grabbed my sword. I got dressed and was about to slip my sword into it's sheer but remembered, no weapons. I threw it on the bed and grabbed knives. I hide them in my shirt. No one would find them there.

"Hey,can I bring a sword?" I asked running down the stairs.

"No. Rose is making breakfast if you want some." My mom stood in the hallway and threw knives at a target down the hall.

"How about knives?"

"Of course."

"Hide them well. We get blamed if you kill anyone."

"Who knows? They probably say we passed our 'mental illness' on to you."

"You guys are mentally insane."

"That's what I've been saying."

"Isn't the Reaping at eight?"

"It's seven forty."

"Fuck. Cato!"

I grab a piece of toast and run out the door. The Justice Building is a good ways away. I was suppose to pick up Lilly. I run to Lilly's house. She is waiting for me.

"Sorry I'm late." I say with a smile.

"It's alright." She smiles back."Ready to go?"

"Yeah." As we walk to the Justice Building, all is silent.

"I hope you don't get reaped."

"I probably will."

"Well, I know you'd win."

"Have you seen the girl who was chose to volunteer?"

"Yeah, I beat her in a fight."

"Yeah, she can only use an ax."

"How old is she?"

"If you get reaped, make sure she is the first one you kill. Just throw a knife at her skull."

When we get their, Peacekeepers take my blood. I go over to the fourteen boys area. I see my mom and dad up on stage. Harley walks out. Harley is a family friend. He was my parents escort.

"Welcome! Here is a clip from the Capitol." He says. The clip plays. Boring.

After it ends Harley walks over to the girls." Ladies first!" He pulls out a name. I've never heard of.

A tall girl with blonde hair yells,"I volunteer as tribute!" She walks up to the stage. Harley hands her the mic."My name is Veronica Waver. I'm sixteen and I'll be your next victor!" She waves. Ugh, she is annoying. She has this accent that is worse than a Capitol accent.

"Now for the boys." Harley walks over and pulls a name. His frowns."Caden Hawks."

I roll my eyes. Three years in a row. No one volunteers this year. I walk up to the stage. My mom and dad shake their heads.

"Shake hands." Harley nods. I reach out my hand. The girl gives me an evil look. I give it right back."Here are your District Two tributes! May the odds be ever in your favor."

A Peacekeeper leads me into the Justice Building and into a room. Lilly comes and visits me.

"Caden!" She runs in and hugs me.

"Please win!"

"I will,Lilly."

"At least your parents are your mentors."

"Yeah, they will help me."

"I love you,Lilly."

"No, loving is for weaklings."

"Lilly, just accept it."

"Love is for weaklings. The only thing we love is blood, killing, and weapons."

"Times up." A Peacekeeper comes in and takes her away.

Next,it's my little sister Caylen.

"Hi,Caylen." I saw.

"Hi,Caden." She replies. She looks just like my mom. I don't get to see her much. She is always with Ellnna or my mom. She is an expert knife thrower and she is only four. "Guess what I learned?"

"I can throw three knifes in each hand and hit three targets." Of course she can. She is amazing. I am good, but she is nearly better. I can't do all the fancy stuff, like spin around and hit targets. My mom has tried to show me,but I fail every time. I guess being the son of the best knife thrower to live they expect you to be awesome to. I never miss, but neither does my four-year-old sister.

"You''ll have to teach me when I get home."

"Ok! You have to teach me how to use a kukri."

"Alright. See you soon."

"Bye,Caden. You''ll do great."

A Peacekeeper brings her out and drags me away.I get put into a car and drove to the train station. The car ride is quiet.

When I get to the train station, I'm shown my car. I'm hungry so I decide to go down to the dining car. My parents and Harley are already there.

"Where's the girl?" Asks my mom.

"Who knows?" I reply.

"I'm right here." She rolls her eyes and sits down.

"Name?" My mom asks her.

"Veronica Waves."

"Ax. I'm the best  to ever live." My mom gives her an unimpressed look."Not impressed?"

"No. I killed the best. Ever heard of Johanna Mason? Yeah, she was the best."

"I'm better."

"Highly doubt it."

"I'm not stupid enough to get killed."

"So,Caden?" My dad interrupts.

"How's life?"

"Alright. You?"

"What do you use?" The girl asks me.

"Everything and anything." I reply boldly.

"I've seen you before."
"At the Training Center?"

"Yeah, you are good. How old are you?"

"Never mind."

"Yeah, you'll never mind that when I cut your head off." My dad laughs at my comment.

"Doubt that."

"I don't" I pull out a knife and throw it past her head.

"Caden! Do you want to be like your mom!" Harley shouts at me.

"I never tried to kill you,Harley. It was only Cato,Colin, and Talon." My mom sighs.

"Wait, those are your parents?" Veronica hisses at me."You are Caden Hawks! Damn it."

"That'd be me."

"Pick your mentor." My mom says.

"I have Caden!" My dad says.

"Leave me with her. Great. Appreciate it,Cato." She rolls her eyes.

"We will be in the Capitol in about an hour." Harley interrupts.

"Do whatever you want until then. Tribute Parade is tonight."

"Sounds good." I say and eat some food.

About an hour later, we arrive in the Capitol. We get off the train and go into our apartments. When I walk into a room, my stylist is waiting.

"Olivia?" I ask.

"Caden!" Olivia hugs me. "I usually get the girl tributes, but I had to get you."

"Good to see a familiar face."

"You have your parents and Harley."

"Well, I got a good outfit for you!"

"So, we are going with gods."

"Greek Gods. They are very powerful just like you!"

"You will be Zeus."

After about two four my costume was ready. It was kind of stupid to be honest. At least I didn't look like Veronica. She looked like an idiot.

"We will eat now. Then we have to o to the Parade." Harley sits us down. We all eat and no one talks.

After our meal, we go to our chariots. As I stand by mine, my parents are talking to a mentor from District One."So, you must be Caden." The man says to me.

"That'd be me."

"Everyone says you're the next victor."

"I wouldn't doubt that."

"You seem quite confident."

"Well, I have reasons to be."

"Alliance with one, correct?"

I look to my dad." Yes." He answers for me.

"What about four?" I ask.

"No. Weak." My mom answers.

"Tributes, board your chariots." A man says. I get on and Veronica follows. I am a lot taller. Even though I am fourteen, I am probably about six feet tall. "One, Two,Three."

The chariot in front of us moves. Then, we move. The crowd is shouting 'District Two!' and 'Caden! Over here!'

How do they know me already? Guess being two victors son does help you out. After the parade is over, I get off. I go over to my parents.

"Good job. Sponsors are already lining up." My dad pats me on the back.

"For me?" Veronica asks.

"No, for him."

"Why not me?"

"Are you going to be in the Career pack?"

"Ok, good. Let's go."
