Midnight Run

One month after her 17th birthday, Kaila Woods meets a girl named Kylie in the forest behind her house. Kylie brings her to The Heart of the Forest where she meet more people, all claiming to be werewolves. They tell Kaila she's one too. They say her Change will happen on the next full moon. But Kaila doesn't believe them.

1. Chapter One

I awake to the early morning sunlight filtering through the windows in my attic bedroom. Today is May 17th. My seventeenth birthday.

This is the day I've been dreading for months. Today is the day I leave my home and move across the country to from California to Tennessee. I have few friends here but I still don't want to move away from my tall, beautiful trees.

I get out of my wood bed with the green blankets and dress in black leggings with a green tank top and a necklace with a small wolf charm I carved out of wood last year. Throwing up my reddish brown hair in a ponytail, I walk to my window and stare outside at the Cali beach. Girls tan in the sun while the guys run in the waves. Typical early morning California.

I walk down the stairs to where my mother is standing in the kitchen finishing packing up the plates before the truck come to collect our stuff. Everything of mine is already in boxes either in my room or down here, ready to be moved. I trip over a short box on the floor and almost land on our pomeranian, Bear.

"Sorry, baby" I say as I get into a more comfortable position on the floor to pet the brown fuzz ball.

"Good, your awake." My mother turns around to me sitting with Bear. "Our flight leaves at two, it's eleven. Go get the rest of your stuff and bring it down here. We have leftover food from last night for when you're done." She's turns back to her last minute packing. "Oh, and feed the dog too."

"Okay mom, come on Bear want your food?" At the word food he wags his tail and leads me into the pantry where his bowls are. I fill his food bowl with dry food, I pick up his water dish and walk back into the kitchen to refill it.

After I know that Bear won't die of dehydration, I go back up stairs to get the last two boxes out of my room along with my suitcase and carry on for the plane. My zebra striped suitcase waits by my door while my black coach purse sits on my bed with my laptop, phone, wallet and MP3 player beside it waiting to leave. The largest of the two boxes stands in the middle of the room filled with my books while the smaller box is on my dresser. It's a white box with tiny black paw prints on the sides. A black envelope sits beside it.  It's the last thing my dad have to me before he died, eight years ago.

Open this on the day before the full moon a month after your seventeenth birthday. It will explain everything, I promise. Remember, I love you.

I've had it since I was eight. Two days after my birthday he left us. After he left I would dream about him coming back to us and showing me what was in the box. My dreams somehow kept the secret of the white box, there was always a just a shadow inside.

I carry both boxes down the stairs only tripping twice, and drop them beside a box labelled 'living room'. Bear almost has a heart attack and tries to kill the bottom box while I move more boxes towards the door for the truck to take.
