I Try

Madison Harper, 14, is going through a hard time. However, when a blizzard traps her in her house with her father the pastor for two weeks, she starts to try to recover. She tries.

10. Chapter Nine

It was the day before Christmas Eve when the power finally came back, and with it the divorce papers and a letter telling Dad he had full custody of me if she got full custody of the twins. Reluctantly, he signed the papers and agreed to the custody agreement, sending them out just before the post office closed.

That day, we saw her with her new husband. The one she'd been with for a long time.

They, apparently, had eloped before the Voice of Mom even sent for a divorce. I went for a walk. Hellsington was in shambles after the blizzard.

When I got home, Dad was packing his bags.

"What's going on?" I asked.

"We're moving. To Seattle. I saw the letter from your sister on your computer." Dad walked up to me and put his hands on my shoulders. "Maddie, do you feel trapped?"

Slowly, I nodded. "Yeah. All the time."

Dad groaned and pulled me into a hug. "I am so sorry, Madison. I had no idea. We would've moved long ago if you'd told me."

I winced and hugged him back. "What about your job, Dad? And Christmas?"

"It's only a three hour drive, and who says this can effect our Christmas? I already have a hotel room rented until we can get an apartment."

"What about money, Dad?"

"Getting you out of here is more important than money." he went to my eye level and stared at me seriously with his deep blue eyes. "Madison, there's a friend of mine down there. Her name's Lucille. I know you're struggling with depression."

"How?" I whispered hoarsely.

"Sweetie, it's written all over your face." He brushed some of my hair out of my face. "We're going to get the hell out of Hellsington, Madison."

I started crying. Not out of sadness, but out of happiness and overall relief. We were seriously getting out of here. I was going to get help.

It was all going to be okay.

It would all be okay.
