6. Chapter Five

As I sat for the Voice of Mom's signature dinner, spaghetti, I was finding it impossible to look either her or Dad in the eyes. How could I? I'd just read a letter from my dead sister that had explained that the Voice of Mom was cheating on her husband. A-D-U-L-T-E-R-Y. She'd broken one of the Ten Commandments, and the one many hold closest!

"How was your day today, Maddie?" the Voice of Mom finally asked, giving me a warm smile that made me want to scowl.

"Fine." I replied simply.

"How was your walk?" Dad asked with an equally cheesy smile.

"It was fine."

The Voice of Mom and Dad made eye contact with that funny desperate look. They both then looked back at me, totally disregarding the mess Marina and Malcolm were making.

"Have you talked to Jackie lately?" Voice of Mom asked, as if she was really so interested in my social life.

"No. Jackie and I aren't friends anymore."

"Renee then?" Dad added.

"No. I'm not friends with Renee either."

Voice of Mom was silent for a moment, trying to think of one of my former friends. "Naomi?"

I lost my temper then. "Mom, Dad, I don't have time for friends, okay? I'm busy with . . . schoolwork."

My parents exchanged a worried look. Dad asked, "Madison, do you want to talk about it?"

"No. May I be excused?"

They nodded in unison and I made a run for it.
