A Baseball Romance

Baseball. How can one sport bring two people together all by itself? Well it can. It happened to Lily and Justin. Just a country girl with nowhere to go and the captain of the baseball team.

5. Five

(Lily POV)

"Alright kids, this game was the best we've ever played. But, it was against the second to last placed team in our division as of last year." Coach says to me and Lily. "We need to step up our game and YOU guys will be figuring out how we do that. I have a bunch of tapes of past games of ours and our next opponents. Watch them, take notes, get back to me." He plops a crate of videos on the desk separating him from us. I kinda just stare at it for a minute. How could there possibly be that many videos for us to watch?

"Alright, I guess we should get to work on these tonight." Justin says lifting the heavy looking crate off the desk. "Want to come over to my house later and we can work on this?" He asks me as we walk down the hall.

"I have horses I need to ride tonight.." I mumble back. Of course I want to come over.

"Can you come over afterward? I can make us dinner if you want." He seemed disappointed as he said this.

"I don't have a car and I don't think my mom would want to drive me after working all day." I sigh, this was not the turn I had wanted this conversation to take.

"Do you have your license? Can your dad take you?" I did have my license and my dads brand spanking new hardly been used Ford truck had been sitting in the driveway for ages untouched. A plan started forming in my head.

"You know, I have an idea."

(Justin POV)

We walk in silence for awhile. Thoughts run through my head, making me wonder what in the world her plan could possibly be. While I'm thinking it occurred to me that if she was going to come over, it would be helpful if she knew where the hell I lived.

"Where do yo-" We both start at the same time. She laughs awkwardly.

"What's your address?" We stand at the entrance to the gym.

"Here I'll put it in your phone so you don't lose it." She hands me her phone and I put my number and my address in, so she can text me when she's on her way. I hand her phone back and pick up the crate again.

"Why'd you give me your number?" She asks lifting an eyebrow and looking me in the eye.

"So you can text me when you're on your way." I say. "Here text me now so I have yours and don't think you're a wrong number." She looks down and types something, quickly sending it off. Seconds later I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket.

(Lily POV)

After finishing up with my last horse I rush inside to get ready. Dumping my backpack on my bed, I hurriedly turn on the shower and brush out my gross, sweaty helmet hair. I would pick out something to wear after I showered.

Twenty minutes later, I towel dry my hair and dig into my sparse make-up collection. Mascara, some ancient liquid eyeliner, and a tiny, tiny, bit of concealer. Whatever, I'd make do with what I had and if he liked it, great, if not, that's his problem, not mine.

After applying way more makeup than I normally wear, I head over to my closet. I usually just grab a sweatshirt and a pair of boot cut jeans. But today, I dig out one of my few pairs of skinny jeans and my one and only Hollister t-shirt. I look at my collection of shoes and settle on my old pair of Sperry Top-siders. The second most comfortable pair of shoes I have ever owned.

Two minutes into looking for my dads car keys my phone vibrates in my back pocket, scaring the shit out of me. I grab it and look at the caller ID, it's Justin.

Hey, on your way yet?

No, looking for keys

Oh, that sucks :/

Yeah, haven't used them in ages

Well my mom and sisters just left, and my dad is out of town so the house is ours, let me know when you're on your way so I can start dinner.

Will do. Make something yummy!

I'll try :) lol

After that, I stop replying and keep looking for the keys. They had to be here somewhere, we didn't have very many places for them to be.

I finally find them, brand new and shiny, with lock and unlock buttons.

I sit in the truck for a good ten minutes before putting the keys in the ignition, scared to death that my mom would look out a window and see me. You see, I've had my license for ages but I rarely ever drive anywhere. My mom always sends my brother to the store, and she always picks me up or drops me off at school, so I never really had a reason to need to drive.

I start the truck, the big diesel engine roaring to life, and slowly pull out of sight of the house. I slow to a stop at the end of the driveway and turn on navigation to Justin's house and send a text telling him I'm on my way.
