The Girl With Leukaemia

(Inspired by TFIOS) Aisling Rivers has been diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukaemia since she was 8 years old, and up until now, her life hasn't sparked any fun at all. It is a constant drive in and out of hospitals and their hospital beds, a normal day is impossible. Having a life is impossible. Finally, she meets a boy that is her age and she leaves her current situation completely to befriend Jett Nolan.

Jett Nolan is a notorious vandalist and has a buzz for putting up fights. He has been to court the previous two times and he assumed that it would be the same routine for the third time. Attend a court meeting, settle out any fines and then spend hours in a youth detention centre but his punishment this time was different - community service, in a hospital, filled with sick and old people. Not what Jett had in mind... at all.

She was looking for a friend and all he needed was some company but what they didn't know was that they would become so much more.

The Girl With Leukaemia| 4

"Is she going to be okay?" I asked, I watched as the doctors got Aisling into bed while she was still unconscious. My heart felt weak all of a sudden as I continued to stare at Aisling just lying in her bed completely senseless, her needle came detached from her hand meaning whatever were in the packets and feeding her has been disrupted.

"Is she going to be okay?" I asked for the second time but it seemed as though I won't get any answers. The doctors and nurses were rushing around, making sure she was connected to all the machines.I couldn't stand watching her anymore and disappeared from the room, that's what I'm good at doing. Disappearing from people's lives, it's better for everyone that I just vanish that way they don't get the fault for my misbehaviour. Everything in the end turns out to be my fault anyway but what can I do?

I breathed out heavily and brushed through my mess of hair with my fingers, I had the urge to go run and do what I enjoying doing and what I enjoy doing is vandalising but that is exactly what got me here in the first place. I decided it was best to fight the urge and go do my job, I walked through the double doors into the canteen and then into the kitchen were I was greeted by the two hospital 'canteen ladies'.

"Jett, how is she?" Sara asked, she is the lady, who had the short brown hair and a fuller body. I didn't know what to say, was there anything to say? The doctors were ignoring me and I couldn't get anything out of the nurses. I simply shrugged and walked over to the sink and started washing up the plates and cutlery for the next batch of people who were going to have lunch.

"She's going to be okay, Jett. Don't you worry about a thing" Gene said confidently, she is a little skinnier then Sara and had long blonde hair. How can she be okay? I don't even know what's wrong with her and neither would she tell me, what could be so bad in telling me? I ignored the ladies and distrated my concerned thoughts with washing and drying the plates.

After I finished, I dried my hands and grabbed the stack of plates and came out of the kitchen to put the plates in the tray, while Sara got the cutlery and set them in the designated compartments of the two layered tray. As I turned to go back into the kitchen Sara stopped me in my tracks, I looked at her.

"Go an' see how she's doing, boy! I don't like this moody version of you" I gave some thought to what she said, I guess I am feeling miserable than usual. Almost everyday I keep a up beat sort of mood but since I met Aisling... I don't know... I really don't know why I am feeling like I am.

"Fine" I said, she gave me a tray with a plate of food and a glass of water. She gave a nod to the double doors and I cautiously turned around and started to walk out of the canteen. Would she want to see me? After I shooted her with questions that I kind of guessed she wasn't comfortable in answering. I found myself in front of the door leading to Aisling's room, There was a little sqaure window in the door allowing me to see into the room and there I saw both of her parents but I couldn't seem to see if Aisling was awake or not because her faced was turned towards the huge window.

I opened the door and both the parents turned and looked at their unsuspecting visitor. I approached them quietly but unfortunately my squeaky sneakers wouldn't have allowed that so I decided to speed my walking and laid the tray on the desk beside her.

"We need to eat honey, she's not going to wake up. The doctor said it will take a few hours" Aisling's mum told her husband. Aisling's dad was completely motionless and stared at his daugther with a worry expression, he didn't want to leave her alone.

"I can watch over her while you get your lunch" I blurted out. The parents turned to face me surprised, I surprised myself also. I have never done something like that for anyone.

"Are you sure? We won't be too long" Aisling's mum said politely.

"It's fine, you need to eat and so do you Mr..." I looked at the father, he looked at me and then turned towards his wife before taking a good long glance in my direction almost to see if he can trust me.

"Rivers. You make sure you look after her while were gone and don't leave her side" I nodded firmly at Mr Rivers and sat into the armchair beside her while her parents dissapeared from the room. I leaned my head against the back of the armchair and came face to face with the pale blue ceiling.

"I wasn't supposed to be here, you know. At first I didn't want to be here but it's not too bad now" I started to make a conversation knowing that she may or may not be able to hear a word I'm saying.

"Some people say that even though your in a coma or sleeping you can still hear everything in your surroundings but I don't find myself to believe that. You know Aisling, you're weird and crazy but for some reason I find you enticing. I don't know what's wrong with you but whatever it is I'm sure you'll get better and then we can be friends... No that's silly, a vandalist who constantly messes every person's life doesn't deserve any friends. I don't deserve any friends because I can never keep them." I breathed in heavily and looked at Aisling, who was still sleeping and that made me grin for some unknown reason. I leaned back against the chair once again and closed my eyes allowing myself to unwind.

"You're silly you know that right?" I opened my eyes and looked onto the bed were Aisling was sitting upright and smiling at me. I opened my eyes wide and stood up shocked that she woke up so soon but mostly because that she was awake.

"You heard all of that?" She nodded and looked down at the sheets. My face started to warm up but I stayed in the chair watching her closely. I can see that her lips were twitched up in a small smile even though she was looking down, her long brown hair fell down her shoulders slowly forming a curtain that started to cover her face. Everything I said, she heard it.

"You know, you're silly to think that you don't deserve any friends. If I could I would love to be friends with you but if we become friends, I would just like to point out one thing. You're a pain in the ass but it will never be enough to drive me away from you" she said quitely and I looked at her, for the first time I looked at her properly. She was willing to be a friend for me.

It's likely that I'll vent my anger on her, shout, say things that I shouldn't and say all and every mean thing but will she really go through my absurd behaviour just to be friends. Deep down I know that something will drive her away sooner or later but how soon would it be before I lose her...
