-Excerpt-
My fingers gently run over the dark mark situated in the crook of my neck. I wince at the slight pain. As I open my eyes that I didn't know I closed, I look to Leah.
My eyebrows furrow as I realise she isn't looking at me, but rather someone behind me. My head turns immediately to the source holding her attention.
He stands there, only metres from the door, staring at me. He smirks at me before dropping his left eye in a wink and vanishing out the door.
Fear racks through my body as I remember his words.
"You're now mine, Emily."
I turn back to Leah, our expressions the same.
Complete shock and fear.

Chapter 1

I sigh as I finally sit down. I grab a file from the drawer and place it on the desk in front of me. Time to do some notes. Even if there is only the one set of notes to write.

I flick through to the section I need.

Harley Brown.

Today Harley was walking around the ward freely. He says his pain is about a 1 or 2 out of 10. He bathed, and played around for a while. Harley had his aunt, uncle and cousins visit him. He is getting prepared to be discharged tomorrow. His blood pressure was in good range, along with his heartbeat and saturation levels. His blood sugar was a bit higher than his normal average but it was soon discovered that he had wandered off to the surgical ward and discreetly stole some cordial and biscuits. And with this it’s in our view that he should be discharged. The dietician gave his parents a form of what he should be eating, so he almost prepared.

I sign it before closing the file and placing it back in the empty drawer. I close it and put the pen back in my pocket.

I stand up the chair sliding backwards on its wheels. I walk out from behind the desk. And towards Harley’s room. I hear talking and I frown. As I walk in I see the next nurse, Stacey.

“Hey Stacey.” I say as I walk in. “What’s up Harley?”

He laughs at me and Stacey greets me. I frown at Harley.

“What are you laughing at?”

He laughs again. “You’re voice.” He says through his giggles.

I frown at both him and Stacey with a smile on my face. “You’ve been in here for a week now Harley.” I tease.

“It’s funny though, can you say water?” he asks excitedly.

I chuckle before doing as he asks. Only mine sound more like ‘wartah’. I’m an Australian in London. Yes, the kids love my accent.

No, I don’t understand why.

“So what are you doing here Stace?” I ask shortening her name.

“ED want you down there. There’s a kid who doesn’t really like people, they figured you could help.” She shrugs. “They asked me to swap with you until she can get settled.”

“Alright, when do I need to go down?” I ask leaning against the door frame.

She looks to mischievous Harley who is roughly turning pages in a book. She looks back to me. “They said the sooner the better. Harley be careful with that book, remember it’s not yours.” She scolds him.

He looks to me as if asking if she is right. I nod with a half smirk.

I take out Harley’s stats folder and open it. “I just finished his notes for today. You might need to do some after though.” I add. I turn to the observations section. “The last set of ‘obs’ was done at 2 and its only 3:30 now. His bsl needs to be done in about half an hour though, because I couldn’t do them earlier.” I raise an eyebrow at Harley.

“What? I was hungry.” He says sticking up for himself.

I laugh at the 5 year old. “So you go all the way to surgical to steal food?” He nods at me so I laugh again. “Anyways, his sheets might need changing before he goes to sleep. And his parents said they’d be back before dinner. Is that all?”

“Yeah that’s fine. Thanks Emily.”

I smile. “No worries, I’ll be off.” I place the folder on the foot of the bed. “See ya later alligator!” I call to Harley as I walk out.

“Don’t forget your toilet paper!” he calls back. I taught him well.

I laugh and walk out of the ward.

Time to go to emergency.
