12. XII. You Mean We're Fighting . . .

I woke  up to a person screaming. I rubbed my eyes and looked around. I immediately recognized that Beth was missing. I looked below us and found her falling through the clouds.

     "Help!" she yelled.

I said nothing and jumped off Speedy.

Thanks to the winds, I dropped faster. Not sure if that was good or bad, but I had to save Beth.

The wind was strangely . . . well, not calm. It seemed to be furious at something or someone. I felt like I was flying through a pile of needles, while usual it feels smooth and nice.

I shook he thought from my mind and went down faster. As I got closer to Beth, the ground seemed to get closer as well.

Finally, I managed to grab her hand. I summoned the winds and held us in midair. I knew that flying back Speedy would be hopeless, so I decided to just land on the ground and call him.

I descended us slowly toward the ground. We placed our feet on the round and I allowed the winds to return to whatever they were doing before I summoned them.

"Are you okay?" I asked Beth.

As I got a closer look at her, I realized that she was bleeding on her right cheek from a cut. I immediately assumed that the winds had done this to her. I knew something was definitely wrong here.

Then Beth saw that she bleeding. She smiled and took something from her pocket. It was square and looked like it was made with flour with white power on top.

She saw me staring at it and said, "I guess you don't know what this is. Well, this is called ambrosia. It is also food for the gods. If you eat it, you can be healed."

Then she took bites out of it until it was gone. Suddenly, her wound on her cheek began to slowly close up. After a few seconds, you couldn't believe it was ever there. Only the blood remained.

I stood there wide eyed at what I just saw.

When I recovered, I remembered about calling Speedy. I turned toward the direction he had flown off to and before I could whistle, a voice stopped me.

     "Hello there," said a voice.

I turned around to find a woman standing before us. She was wearing a black robe with matching boots. She had on dark sunglasses and a cloth covering her hair.

"What are you two doing all alone here?" she asked in a gentle voice.

"Hi," I said, "We just lost our way and wandered into this place."

She made a worried look. "That's not good. You need a good place to stay." she pointed at her right. "Why don't you come over and I'll treat you?"

     "No thank you-" Beth began.

"That will be great, thank you." I interrupted.

Beth looked at me with an angry expression.

What are you doing? she mouthed.

     I smiled and shrugged.

     "Follow me," said the woman.

She turned around and began walking toward where she pointed. I followed. I saw Beth sigh and then follow me.

I thought that it was going to take five-eight minutes tops to arrive to where she was taking us. Unfortunately, it took way longer.

Fifteen minutes later, I was exhausted. Then, I recognized something weird about this. I looked around. I was sure she had passed here before. I had gotten suspicious and put a stone every time I recognized a place and it was the seventh time I had placed a stone in this area.

     Finally, I stopped.

The woman turned around and asked, "What's wrong?"

"May I ask where we are going?" I asked.

"What do you mean?" she asked back.

"Here," I said in annoyance. "We've been here seven times already. Are you sure this is the right way?"

She pointed ahead. "We're actually here."

In the distance, I could see a greenhouse.

I stood up straight and gestured toward the greenhouse. "Ladies first."

The woman smiled and headed toward the greenhouse. Next Beth, and then I followed behind them.

We followed the woman inside the greenhouse when we arrived.

Inside was was, if you aren't stupid to have already guessed, plants! Four rows of plants I cant name. There was also statues inside the greenhouse. Some were smiling, and others looked shocked and scared.

"Do you make statues?" I asked.

She nodded. "Yes, as you can see."

I walked to one of them and examined it. It was incredible! The statue looked so real. The eyes, cheekbones, hair, everything!

     "You're incredible!" I exclaimed.

She blushed. "Why thank you. I try."

After a few minutes of me examining other statues, the woman called, "The food's ready!"

Then she walked in with a giant plate filled with hamburgers, fries, chicken, rice, and soup.

My eyes immediately widened and my mouth began watering. I wiped the drool off from under my mouth with embarrassment. Luckily, no one recognized.

She set the plate in the corner of the greenhouse where there was a table. Around the table was three seats. Perfect.

I was the first one to sit down and begin eating. As Beth sat down, I heard her mumble the words, "So much for manners."

I ignored her and continued eating.

Minutes later, my stomach was full. I felt as f I had just gained fifty pounds after the meal. I laid in my chair a bit and relaxed.

"Hey, we never did get your name." I said to the woman.

She smiled and said, "Oh, my name is Mel Madison. My friends like to call me Aunt Em. Feel free to call me that if you wish."

"Thank you for the food, Aunt Em." I said.

"I really love you guys," Aunt Em said as she smiled. "Hey, do you mind if we take a picture together really fast?"

"I'm sorry, but we should be heading off," Beth declined.

"She's just being modest," I said. "We'd love to take a picture with you."

"Fantastic!" Aunt Em exclaimed. "Go ahead and stand against the glass."

Beth and I stood up and stood against the glass of the greenhouse. Just then, dark clouds began to gather in the sky, making this a little darker.

Aunt Em made a worried look. "That's not good. We can't have the clouds blocking the light."

She looked and made a gentle smile. "Since you're Zeus's son, would you mind making the clouds go away?"

     I smiled back. "Oh, sure-"

I froze stiff and slowly looked at her. "How did you know that?"

"That was just a joke," Aunt Em said in a nervous voice.

Then she quickly began untying the cloth covering her hair. I could have swore I saw something moving in there.

"Just let me get rid of this thing and we can take the picture," Aunt Em said.

Just before she could pull it off, Beth grabbed my hand and began running. She pulled me behind a row of plants. She had a scared look on her face.

"I think I know who she is," Beth said.

"A kind lady who offered us food and a place to stay?" I said.

She shook her head. "How dense are you? Don't you see that there's something wrong about her?"

     "Her sunglasses?" I asked.

"No!" she yelled at me. "something else."

"The part when she said that I was a son of Zeus and to make the clouds go away?" I asked again.

     "Yes, but-" Beth said.

"She said it was a joke though," I interrupted.

     "That's not it!"

     "Then what?"

"I've had a suspicion about her ever since we met her and I think I just found proof to confirm it." she said.

I sighed. "I think you're just thinking too much about this."

She shook her head and placed her hands on my shoulder. "Please tell me this isn't actually happening."

I made a confused look. "Are sure you're okay?"

Suddenly I heard hissing coming from where Aunt Em was.

"Does she own a pet snake or something?" I asked.

Beth slapped me in the face. "Are you stupid!?"

"Okay, guys," called Aunt Em in a slithery voice. "I'm ready for the picture."

"Coming!" I called as I was about to step from the row of plants.

But before I could, Beth's hand grabbed me and pulled me back. She spun me around and looked at me in disbelief.

"Do you want to die or something?" she asked while trying hard not to hit me.

"Die? What are talking about?" I asked.

"She's a monster, Jake!" she yelled.

"But she's so nice." I said.

     "She's trying to deceive us."

     "Oh. That make sense."

I took out Lightning and took a deep breath. "So do you know what monster she is?"

"Take a look around," Beth said. "The statues. Who do think is capable of making lifelike statues? I'll give you a hint. She a gorgon and has two other sister."

I froze cold along with my insides.

"You mean were fighting . . ." I gulped. "Medusa?"
