22. Chapter Twenty One - Jess

Jess was so heavily drugged that she couldn't be trusted to think straight, let alone get up and leave. She knew that a certain amount of pain meds were required, but she was beginning to suspect that the heavy and lethargic feeling was more than what was necessary.

She barely noticed when a nurse came in until she spoke. "We're going to have to move you to Arkham."

Jess tensed up, the word Arkham sending shooting fear through her. She hated it there. She hated the psychologists and the psychoanalysts and the doctors and the patients that looked at her like she was something to eat. "I can't go there," she slurred, "I haven't done anything wrong. And I'm sane. I have the papers to prove it."

Yes, Jess was terrified of Arkham, though she would never admit it.

The nurse looked at her sympathetically. "Don't worry. It's not to keep you in, but to keep some people out. If your parents decide to break in to see you, we can't defend ourselves, but Arkham is a little more adept at that."

It didn't help much. She still felt like she was going to cry.

"And you'll be kept in another wing." The nurse was now desperate to calm her down.

Nope. Wasn't working.

"And if she wants your sister will be there the whole time."

Okay, that got her. "Jessica? You can get Jessica?"

Relieved, the nurse relaxed and the grin returned. "Yeah. And your boyfriend will still be able to visit."

That's half the people she loved. "And my parents?"

The grin disappeared.

"Will my parents be able to see me?"

The nurse did not want to trudge into that territory, that much was obvious. "We have to leave soon. Batman and Darkwing will be escorting you, isn't that exciting?"

Her heart dropped when she heard the B-Man and his stupid sidekick mentioned. "Yeah. Exciting. Woo." She muttered.

Some quality time with the Batman and his annoying sidekick going to the center of misery.

That would be just buckets. Of. Fun.
