14. Chapter Thirteen - Jess

Jess was sick. She wasn't just faking it to avoid school. She was really sick. And hungry, too, but she'd have to learn how to ignore that.

There was a pounding on the door, causing Jess's already-aching head to pulse. She was so light headed, and dizzy...

"Jess!" her father's voice yelled. "Get out of bed!"

Jess just groaned and turned over, wishing something would just kill her. "I'm not feeling well. Can I stay home?"

Silence. "Fine. But don't come crying to me when you miss something big." the Joker had a soft spot for her, even bigger than the one he had for Jessica or Harley, and Jess knew it - and could use it to her advantage.

She didn't feel like gloating right now, though. The pounding in her head was making it impossible for her to get any much-needed sleep. So she pulled a blanket over her head and faintly contemplated suicide.

Eventually, she managed to fall into a forced sleep.

When Jess woke up, the sun had gone down. She felt a little bit better, but not much. Good enough for her to force herself out of bed, at least.

She swung her feet onto the cold floor and stood, unknowingly stepping on one of the old trapdoors and falling onto a cushion beneath the 'room' - more of an open space in the funhouse, really - she shared with her twin.

The unceremoniously rough and unexpected fall knocked the wind out of Jess, and she just sat there for a moment before getting up and dusting herself off. She hadn't realized the previous night that she'd changed into a black t-shirt and red sweatpants. She shrugged. I'm turning into Dory.

When Jess finally found her way into the main room of the funhouse, she was startled to find that nobody was home. With a check of her watch, she found that it was past one in the morning. That's weird. She thought, and made her way to the other side of the amusement park. She knocked on the door of one of the shacks in the Wonderland attraction.

Alice came to greet her. "Hi, Jess. What can I do for you?"

"Have you seen my parents and sister?" Jess asked. "I just woke up, and they're not home."

"Can't say I have. You wanna come in until they get back?" Alice opened the door wider, knowing full well that the noise of the Clown Pack returning to the amusement park could be heard from the other side of amusement park.

"Sure." Jess replied, entering the shack. It was September in Gotham, and in the state of New York this meant near-freezing temperatures at night.

A radio babbled on in the background as Jess leaned against a wall. In the entire news report, she only understood one statement . . .

"We have just received the report that the Batman has captured the Joker, Harley Quinn, and one of their twin daughters in an attempt to break Poison Ivy out of Arkham Asylum. They have been admitted to Arkham. No news on the other twin. Other details withheld."
