17. Chapter Sixteen - Jess

Jess stared at her handiwork in the mirror.

Her face was cross-stitched shut, and the bleeding had stopped. She'd cleared the drying blood from everywhere besides a four-inch radius around her mouth. The pain in her cheeks was sharp and searing, like someone had pressed a branding iron across her face. When she touched the stitches, it got worse.

It's probably going to get infected. I probably should go to the hospital. I probably shouldn't have done this myself. she thought to herself, but there was no going back now.

It hurt to open her mouth, to speak. It put strain on her self-done stitches. She heaved a great sigh, and winced when the stitches were disturbed. She dug around in her little med bag and pulled out a thing of aspirin. She swallowed it, whimpering a little. It didn't help much.

Mom and Dad are gonna try to kill the Metropolis gang... I should keep this a secret from them...

She checked her watch. Two A.M. Of course, the pain would make it impossible to sleep, so she just collapsed back onto her bed. Someone will come looking for me, but until then, I need something to do. She grabbed her iPad and turned on a television show, which helped her ignore the burning on her face, and she slowly fell asleep . . .

She turned over in her sleep, pressing her injured face against the bed. With a pained yelp, she sat up.

It hurt worse, and the area around the stitches was inflamed and starting to swell.

She sighed heavily and checked Gotham News on her iPad.

Jessica Theresa "Jess Ter" Quinzell Nicholson, one of the twin daughters of the Joker and Harley Quinn, was reported missing twelve hours ago, at about midnight. A friend of Jess's, Deux Forest Isley Dent, claims to have seen Jess just a few hours after her disappearance. He refuses to say if he know where she is, and he claims not to know what the reason behind her disappearance is.

Jess silently thanked Deux. She looked out the small window at the Gotham skyline. She decided she'd go to a doctor or something in the morning.
