Growing Up Crazy: A Batman Fanfiction {Book V in the Kids of Gotham Series}

It ain't easy being the kid of a crazy person, and nobody can tell you why better than the kids of Gotham. {Batman X Catwoman, Joker X Harley, Poison Ivy X Two Face, Baby Doll X Killer Croc, OCs. Rated Y for mild language and violence, mainly in later chapters as the children get older. Some Superman (Lois X Clark/Superman, Lex Luthor X Mercy) incorporated}

18. Chapter Seventeen - Baxter

(A/N: This series takes place in the BTAS/Batman Beyond timeline, so Babs was never shot and paralyzed. This is a few years after BTAS, and about three years before the flashback scene of Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.)

Two days, six hours, ten minutes since he last saw Jess. Why did he let her out of his sight? Didn't he promise that he'd protect her until she could handle everything herself?

Baxter was worried. More worried than he cared to admit, more worried than he'd ever been. Bax, by nature, was not a worrier - quite laid-back, a bit like his mother but without the whole stealing bit.

He was pacing the floor as Sarah played with a doll in the middle of the room. Jess was the first person outside his extended family he could remember being fond of, especially to this level. Her sister Jessica was the second, and even then only after she'd become Motley a few weeks before.

And the first person outside his family he ever liked was missing. She'd been missing since Friday. No one except her friend Deux had seen or heard from her since then. No matter how much the guy was pressed  for information he wouldn't spill.

Not even Jessica knew where Jess was, though she did have her suspicions.

Baxter was so wrapped up into his thoughts and his pacing that he hardly noticed when his father entered the room. "Are you coming on patrol?" Bruce asked his only son, in all of his Batman getup except the cowl.

"Yeah, I'll be right there." Baxter replied with a sigh.

"Are you sure, Bax?" Batgirl asked as Bruce left for the Batcave. "You've been kind of preoccupied. I'd hate for you to get distracted and hurt . . ."

Baxter couldn't force a glare at his pseudo aunt. "I'm fine, Babs. I'm worried about Jess, but I'm not letting that get in the way of my job."

Batgirl studied him for a moment before finally giving a shrug. "All right."
