5. Chapter Four - Alice and Chesire

Seventeen-year-old Alice Kingsley Tetch shut her copy of How to Find Your Soulmate Without Losing Your Soul (A/N: Real book, I have it, it's pretty good) and smacked herself upside the head with it. She wasn't sure if Max Lutor was a problem child or a smooth criminal, but either way she was screwed.

Why did she even accept his offer to get together, anyway? Oh yeah, he threatened to kill your brother. Then why did she stay together with him? Because you fell for him. Oh great, Allie, you're talking to yourself again. She sighed.

Her eleven-year-old brother, Chesire Kingsley Tetch, joined her in the room and looked over her shoulder. "Whatcha readin'?"

"None of your business." Alice snapped, pushing the annoying little heathen off the back of the couch and turning back to the book. She knew he was aware of where babies come from, but he didn't need to know about the chapter she was on. He didn't need to know how dependent that society was on it yet.

"I thought you had a date with Luthor tonight?" Chesire asked, pulling out his annoying, nosy side.

Alice glared at him, her eyes turning into little specks of ice instead of the regular deep blue they normally were. Another thing different about her, her eyes seemed to change color with her mood.

"I thought you were supposed to be in bed an hour ago." Alice replied icily, brushing a lock of pale blonde hair behind her ear.

"I was, but who needs sleep when they have a sister to annoy? What happened that made you not go on your date with Luthor?"

"Max had to go back to Metropolis a day early. His dad needs help with LexCorp or something like that."

"Or his mom needs help being a body-guard. What do you see in that boy anyway?" Chesire was only eleven, and already smarter datewise than her.

"I don't know, Ch. I just . . . I love him."

"And his parents are richer than we've ever been."

This drove her off the deep end. Alice got up, showing anger that was rare in her. She grabbed her younger brother by the collar of his shirt. She was very sensitive to any insults to her family's situation . . . even from a member of the family himself.

She could still remember when Hatter had taken her and Chesire in as clear as if it was the previous day. She could remember how cold and hungry she had been, how difficult it had been to get the then-two-month-old Chesire to stop crying. She was eternally grateful to her adopted father, and though Chesire didn't remember why or even know he was adopted, he should be too.

"Listen up, Chesire Catticus Tetch, you should be glad that we live here instead of out on the streets. Sure, it's an abandoned amusement park we share with a family of crazy, murdering clowns, and sure, the small amount of money we get comes from a few odd jobs Dad picks up from his friends . . . partners . . . whatever they are, but we have things a lot better than some other families. I'd think you'd know that, considering you know some of them personally."

Chesire winced under his sister's glare. She'd never lost her temper at him. "Okay, sis."

"And Lex and Mercy might be rich, but they're good . . . okay . . . um . . . sort of okay people. They make Max work for what he gets. He's not a spoiled rich kid."

"Yes, sis."

Finally, she released him and he fell to the ground. "Go to bed." she demanded tiredly, sending him running.
