16. Chapter Fifteen - Two Years Later

Now sixteen, Baxter Wayne sat in the Batcave, close to falling asleep with his feet on the control board. His hood was pulled over his face and he was fast asleep.

Suddenly, his father pulled the chair back, knocking Baxter to the ground with an oomph. "What?" Bax asked groggily, sitting up slowly.

"I hear you've been involved with Jess Quinn Niche." Bruce glared at his only son. His gaze made Baxter squirm. There had been a lot of tension in Wayne Manor and the Batcave since Barbara and Dick broke up, leaving them to a custody battle over their only daughter Sarah.

"Where did you hear that?" Baxter had tried to keep that a secret from everyone, his parents included, because who would approve of him dating the daughter of the most chaotic supervillain ever?

"Teenagers like to gossip, you know."

Baxter winced. "Dad, there's nothing wrong with her . . ."

"She's insane and has been admitted to Arkham at least once a year since she was born because of her various crimes." Bruce replied. "Not to mention she's a lot younger than you. Your mother isn't very happy with you either, because she's anorexic."

"Only by two years. And she's been trying to recover from her anorexia. She's mellowed out a little bit, too."

Bruce sighed. "I trust your judgement, Baxter, so I'll defend you from rumors and let it happen. But if you turn out to be wrong about her..."

Baxter nodded.

Fourteen-year-old Jess, with her untidy blonde hair in pigtails and wearing a purple tank top and green and purple shorts, walked along the street humming a lively tune. It was a very good day. A very good day indeed. Her boyfriend, Baxter Wayne, had actually chased away Whitney Carver.

Yes, indeed, a very good day.

Not to mention she'd been released from Arkham on parole after only three days in the asylum. That had to be a new record or something, especially sinced she'd gotten there after gassing the school.

As she approached the street of abandoned buildings, one of which holding her hideout, she began to all-out sing and skip.

Suddenly, she thought she heard something behind her. She froze and flattened herself against a building, noticing a gang she distinctly recognized from one of her visits with her father to Metropolis.

Max Luthor's gang.

Max Luthor and his sister, Lucy. Chris and Laura Kent, who were only occasionally a part of the gang. Electra, Livewire's daughter. The robotic Carmen. Notably absent was her old friend Alice.

Considering the gang was mostly women and teenagers, she figured she stood no danger of being taken advantage of, so she had no idea what they were here for.

One of them - Carmen - roughly grabbed her by the arm. "Hello, female child unit." the robot said casually, pushing her against the wall.

"What's going on?" Jess asked as Max Luthor approached with a knife in his hand.

"We figured that, since you act so much like your father, you might as well look like him." Electra smirked.

So that's why Alice wasn't there.

"What are you going to do?"

"Oh, just put a smile on that face of yours." Max replied cooly.

Jess struggled, and then felt a sharp pain on her head. Everything went black.

Deux, thirteen, walked down the street whistling. He almost tripped over something laying in the middle of a pool of blood. Stumbling, he straightened up and continued to walk before hearing a familiar, albeit weakened, voice coming from the figure.

"Deux . . ."

Recognizing the voice of his longtime crush, Deux froze, unsure what to do.

"Deux... bleeding... out.... need.... third.... building... on right...."

Not wasting any more time, Deux helped Jess to her feet. Her face, neck, and chest were covered in her own blood. She looked like she would faint any moment.

"Are you sure?"

"Just... help...."

Moving slowly, he assissted her to the third building on the right. He helped her to the top of the stairs and she staggered to the elevator.

"Need help?"

"No... I'll.... be.... fine...."

Thinking it over for a moment, Deux decided to trust her.

The incident quickly reached Chesire, 13. Of course, this was a mini-organization that always knew everything that happened to one another, but this reached him a little slower than normal.

A smile had been cut into Jess's cheeks, by someone she refused to tattle on. She was in an abandoned building on Ruckery Road, and hadn't come out.

All anyone knew was that the gang that attacked her was from Metropolis.

Knowing a gang like that was in his sister's city made his blood run cold.

Lacey, 12, didn't even try to feign surprise at all the surprising things that had happened lately. First, her best friend was a bloodbender. Second, there might be a doctor that might be able to help with her leg. And now Jess had an eternal smile on her face.

For some reason, none of this surprised her. She just knew she could get through it.

After all, perserverance was the most important part of living in Gotham.
