Friend Zoned 2

Liam and Kylie are best friends in college together. When Liam decides to join the football team, a new girl catches his eye. Victoria - the tall brunette with green eyes and is also on the cheerleading team as head captain. As their friendship begins to fall apart, will Kylie do anything to fix their friendship or will she move to California to let Liam see what he's leaving behind?

5. The Break Up

Liam’s POV.

For weeks I have been spending a lot of time with Victoria and now I rarely see my friends. The year was now nearing its end. I entered the lunch area, approaching the table where the group of my friends were sitting. Kylie wasn’t amongst them. “Hey guys.” I smiled as I reached the table.

“Hey Liam.” Michaela smiled. “Long time no see, you should join us.” She motioned towards an empty chair, except there were two empty chairs. One for Kylie and one for me. I was about to sit down when Victoria came up to me. Two of her friends were with her.

“Babe, come and sit with us.” Victoria smiled. I looked at her and then looked at my friends. They didn’t show it on their faces, but their eyes were telling me what they really thought. “I’m going to sit with my friends for a change.” I told her.

She frowned and I knew that she wasn’t going to be happy about it. She turned and walked away with her friends, leaving me to sit with mine. “I’m going to break up with her.” I told my friends as soon Victoria and her friends were out of ear-shot.

“Good choice man. You don’t deserve someone like her.” Niall said.

“Hey, maybe Kylie will take you back.” Julian suggested. I wanted to agree with Julian, but considering the fact that I haven’t seen Kylie in months, I was beginning to lose hope. Since the day she and I had become friends until high school, I wanted Kylie to be my girlfriend.

I’ve always been there through all the break ups that she’s been through, which was only one. I’ve comforted her when she was feeling down, cheered her up, made her laugh, and it was only to see that another guy would make her happy.

After Zayn, she hadn’t gone for anyone else and that was my opportunity. The door was opened, but it closed before I could reach it. I felt that my friendship with Kylie has been lost, gone forever.

Kylie’s POV.

UCLA. It was my first day at this school and the first time that I’ve ever left Liam’s side. I wonder if he’s thinking about me. I went to my first class and sat down in my seat. Obviously I was the new kid, but no one noticed.

“Kylie?” A familiar voice rang out. Of course, he noticed. Harry approached me, sitting down in the seat beside me. “Harry Styles, I’m surprised that you’re in this class.” I told him. He shrugged and said, “I’m surprised you’re here.”

“I came to pursue my degree and I was planning to move here eventually.” I said.

“What about Liam? Does he know that you’ve left?”

“I doubt it. He doesn’t even care about me anymore.”

“Of course he cares about you Kylie. You two are best friends.”

Were Harry.” I corrected him, rolling my eyes and then class began. After class, Harry and I walked out of the classroom where we met up with Louis out on the quad. Shortly, I learned that Louis had joined the soccer team (no surprise there) and Harry was a womanizer as always.

“Liam’s going to be devastated when he finds out that you left without a goodbye.” Louis said as we sat down on the benches surrounding the quad. “It’s for the best Louis. He has a girlfriend.” I had finally taken my phone out of my pocket to see the missed calls - Michaela (2), Kim (1), and Liam (15).

“Victoria? Yeah, I don’t really like her.” Harry said. “She’s seems to be trying to tear you and Liam apart.”

“She’s already done that Harry and Liam, he’s in love with her.” I said. Just thinking about Liam and Victoria together made me rethink the relationship I had with Liam (as a friend). But what caught me off-guard was why Liam went for Victoria.

Liam’s POV.

After school, I drove by Victoria’s house and parked the car out front. I got out of the car and rang the doorbell. The door opened and I was met with Chloe, Victoria’s little sister. “Hi Liam!” Chloe smiled. In many ways, Chloe reminded me of Kylie.

She had an energetic feel to her and the way her eyes lit up when she said my name. “Is your sister home?” I asked her as she nodded. I thanked her and entered the house as the door closed behind me.

Victoria emerged from the kitchen, putting her phone into her purse. “Hey babe, can’t talk. I’m going to meet the girls at the mall.” she said.

“No, I need to talk to you. It’s important.” he said.

“What’s more important than going to the mall?” she asked. After dating her for a couple months now, she had turned into what everyone warned me about - a monster. Not really. But metaphorically speaking. She was out of control and never really cared about her boyfriends, which were all the things I learned from Kim.

“I’m breaking up with you.” I told her, getting it over with. I wasn’t going to drag anything out. I wanted our break up to be immediate, not caring about how bad the aftermath would be. “What?” she asked me. I knew she would be furious.

“I’m in love with my best friend. I know you’re only dating me because I’m on the football team. You wouldn’t date me if I was a nobody. You never want me to hang out with my friends. It’s over.”

With that being said, I turned and walked out the door. I got in the car and drove away, knowing that I left her in complete shock. I was glad to be done with her and that left me to focus on one important task - getting Kylie to be my best friend once again and asking her to finally be my girlfriend.
