Friend Zoned 2

Liam and Kylie are best friends in college together. When Liam decides to join the football team, a new girl catches his eye. Victoria - the tall brunette with green eyes and is also on the cheerleading team as head captain. As their friendship begins to fall apart, will Kylie do anything to fix their friendship or will she move to California to let Liam see what he's leaving behind?

2. Jealousy arising?

“C’mon Liam, you have to try out for the football team. You have great physique for the sport.” Kylie smiled as we walked around campus together. We have been spending a lot of time together since some of our classes had ended around the same time. There were times where she’d be in class and I’d be hanging out with Niall or Michaela.

“I don’t know Kylie. I’ll think about it.” I told her as we sat down on the benches in the quad. It was a beautiful day, almost perfect to be exact. I was getting the courage to ask Kylie the question I’ve been meaning to ask her for a while, but Michaela and Niall were walking towards our direction. “Hey guys.” Michaela smiled.

“Hey Michaela!” Kylie smiled.

“What are you two up to?” Niall asked.

I shrugged, “Just talking.”

“You should really think about joining the football team. It might be your calling.” Michaela teased as I rolled my eyes. I noticed that she and Niall have been hanging out a lot lately. They don’t seem to leave each others’ side. At this rate, they would be dating. “We’ll see.” I smiled.

After a few more minutes of talking, the four of us parted ways and headed to class. I walked to class alone and sat down in my seat, just thinking about joining the football team. I wasn’t going to back out this time. I was definitely going to go through with the decision to join the team.

The next day a guy approached me. I figured that he must be from the football team. “Hey, you should come out to the try outs this Friday. You look like someone who’d be good at throwing a football.” he said. I didn’t know what else to tell him, but to thank him as he walked away. Did he just give me some sort of a compliment? I might as well just take the advice and go to the try outs.

That Friday after school, I went to the try outs and there were twenty or more other guys there. By the end of the tryouts, I was exhausted but I hadn’t realized that football was a lot of fun. As I was heading towards the locker room, a girl caught my eye.

She was beautiful, tall, and a brunette. She was on the cheerleading team from what I could see. She was telling some of the other girls what to do, so I figured that she was also the head cheerleader. I have never seen anyone as beautiful as her, besides Kylie. No use to go up to her now. I thought to myself.

“Hey man, hope you make the team.” A guy walked up to me. It was the same guy from earlier. “I’m Julian.” He held out his hand towards my direction. I shook hands with him and said, “Liam.”

“Nice to meet you. Ah, I see you’ve taken an interest in the head cheerleader. Her name’s Victoria. She kind of has a thing for football players, especially MVP’s.” Julian said. “She’s not really my type, but she’s all yours.” He walked away in the direction of the parking lot. I made my way into the locker rooms, took a quick shower, and then got dressed.

I got home and smelled something coming from the kitchen. He placed his bag down near the door and entered the kitchen. “Hey, I decided to cook you something.” Kylie smiled, turning her head to face him and then turned her attention to the stove. “You didn’t have to Kylie.” I said, grabbing himself a drink from the fridge.

“I want to. How were the tryouts?” she asked me as I sat down on the counter, opening the can of soda. “They were good. I’m not sure if I’ll make the cut.” I answered. She put some of the food onto one plate and the other half on another. “You’ll make the cut Liam. Once you set your mind to getting what you want, you actually get it.” she said.

We took our plates to the dining table and sat down across from each other.

My parents were working late and once again, we were both alone. “Have you tried out for the cheer team?” I asked her, beginning to eat the food from my plate. She took a bite of her food and nodded. “It wasn’t so bad either. The head cheerleader is really tough, but I’m sure she has a sweet side to her.” she answered.

The next week, Kylie and I met up with our friends at the table. We had two additions to our group - Julian and Kim. We learned that Kim was one of the cheerleaders on the team that Kylie had met. “I think you’ve already made the team Kylie. You were one of the best that we’ve seen.” Kim smiled.

Kylie smiled, “Oh stop.”

“She led our cheer team to victory in high school.” Michaela smiled. The three of them were immersed into conversation, leaving us guys out of the conversation. “Do you think you’ve made the football team?” Niall asked me.

“I don’t want to jinx anything.” I told him.

Eventually later that week, Kylie and I both found out that we had joined our respective teams. “Let’s celebrate, shall we?” she asked with a smile. I told my parents the news and the four of us went out to a restaurant. My parents were so proud of us for reaching our goals.

. . .

The weeks have passed and we were practicing our plays for the game that Friday. We were trying every possible combination so by Friday, we were ready. Our coach told us to take a break and I was just grabbing a bottle of water when a girl approached me. I looked up to see that it was Victoria. I saw that she had beautiful green eyes and I was instantly captivated by them.

“Hi, I’m Victoria. I’m sure you’ve heard lots of stories about me.” she said. “I was watching you on the field earlier and I’m glad the coach chose you.”

“I’m Liam.” I didn’t know what else to tell her. I found it difficult to talk to her since I knew she was the head captain of the cheerleading team and that Kylie was watching us talk. “I really don’t go for new guys, but you’re pretty cute.” she smiled. “I have to go. Some of the girls are slacking.” With that being said, she skipped off before I could put in another word.

After practice, Julian and I walked out of the locker rooms after getting dressed. “Saw you talking with Victoria, how’d that go?” he asked. We were walking out to the parking lot to where our cars were parked. I shrugged, “I hardly got a single word in.”

“Yeah, she has that affect on a lot of guys. I mean, she’s a beautiful girl. It’s a first that she’d be talking to the new guy.” he said. We both said good bye as he walked off to his car, Kylie was walking towards my direction. “You did great out there.” I smiled.

“Victoria, the head cheerleader, is so mean.” Kylie said, rubbing her shoulders. I set my bag down and gave her a shoulder rub. “Thanks. How did practice go?”

“It was good, but tiring. It might have to take some getting used to.” I continued to rub her shoulders. She turned around to face me, looking up into my eyes. “I saw you talking to Victoria. What did she want?” she asked.

“Nothing really.” I replied, honestly. She just nodded and grabbed her bag as she got into the car. I put my bag into the back seat and got in the car along with her. We arrived home and she hardly spoke another word to me after we entered the house, closing the door behind us.

Was she mad at me? I asked myself, watching her head upstairs. I heard her close the door to her room. Was she jealous of Victoria? Why would she have any reason to be jealous? I wasn’t into Victoria.

I went upstairs, setting my bag down in my room and went down the hallway to Kylie’s room. I knocked on the door, waiting for her response. “Go away!” she said from the other side. “Let’s talk Kylie.” I said.

She opened the door and tears were streaming down her cheeks. “What is there to talk about Liam? Let’s face it, Victoria is more beautiful than I. You wouldn’t go after me unless… unless I were the head cheerleader.”

“That’s not true.” I told her as she rolled her eyes, then slammed the door in my face. My mom came up the stairs to ask me if everything was alright. “Just some… girl issues that I can’t explain.” I went back to my room and closed the door.

I wasn’t going to let Victoria come in between our friendship, but later on, I was wrong. Kylie hadn’t spoken me for days, even until after we won our first game of the season. “Can you tell her that I’m not going to be with Victoria?” I asked Kim, who was now a close personal friend of Kylie’s. “I wish I could, but she hasn’t spoken to me either.” Kim said.

Kim and I were in a class together. She was one of the few people I talked to. “But if ever she gets around to talking, I’ll tell her.” she smiled. I thanked her, grateful that Kylie has a friend like Kim around.

“Hey Liam, wanna grab a bite to eat?” Victoria walked up to me one day. I was hanging out in the quad with Julian and Michaela. “Yeah, sure.” I smiled, grabbing my back pack and walked away with Victoria. Three weeks had passed since the day Kylie stopped talking to me. I was getting worried about her.

Victoria and I sat down at a table with our food. “So, there’s this party on Saturday and everyone’s going. I was just wondering if you’d like to go with me because I’d hate to go alone.” she said.

From the corner of my eye, I saw my friends enter with Kylie. “Yeah, I’ll go with you.” I smiled, knowing full well that every single one of them was listening. I didn’t know what situations I’d be putting myself in with Victoria, but I was slowly falling for her.
