7. A Change of Heart

Summer had finally begun. Kylie and I were hanging out the beach together with our friends. From the corner of my eye, I spotted Victoria who was with her family. They were walking towards our direction and I looked the other way. “Liam, is everything alright?” Kylie asked me.

I couldn’t lie to her. “Is that Victoria?” Kim asked, looking over at the direction where Victoria and her family had settled on the beach. Everyone finally noticed. I was just hoping that we could get through this entire day without having to think about her. “She’s about to walk over.” Michaela said.

Victoria had glanced over at our spot and was now approaching our direction, along with her little sister Chloe. “What a nice surprise.” Victoria smiled. “I didn’t think I’d find you guys here.”

“It’s a public beach Victoria.” Julian said.

“Shut it jock.” Victoria spat. While the two of them were in an argument, Chloe stood there silently. I asked her if she wanted to make a sandcastle with me and she nodded. I smiled, lightly nudged Kylie to come along.

Chloe took my hand as Kylie and I walked away from the group to another open spot on the beach. While we were making a sandcastle, I introduced Chloe to Kylie. “You’re really pretty.” Chloe told Kylie and smiled.

“Thank you. You’re pretty too.” Kylie smiled. Finally the sand castle was finished and Victoria walked over. “What are you doing?” she asked me. I stood up, facing her. “We just built a sand castle.” I answered.

“With my sister?”

“You seem to haven’t spent any time with your sister. She looks up to you.”

“I’m a very good role model.”

“Really? You are? Then quit the act Victoria. You’re not fooling anyone. You pretend to be better than a lot of people, but you’re not. You’re just insecure about yourself and so you boss everyone else around thinking that they’ll listen to you.” Kylie said. “That’s not what a role model is supposed to be like Victoria.”

“How do you know what being a ‘role model’ is Kylie?”

“I was the head cheerleader at my school and we have a reputation to keep. You honestly think people will love you because of the way that you act? No. It’s who you are as a person, your personality that makes you a role model. I’ve seen Liam treat your little sister way better than you do.”

Victoria looked at Chloe who sat quietly hearing us argue with one another. “I’ve given you more attention than Liam, right sis?” she asked Chloe. Chloe didn’t know how to respond to her sister and just sat in silence. “I’m your older sister. I have every right to demand an answer from you.” she added.

Chloe still didn’t speak up and I was frustrated with the fact that Victoria clearly doesn’t understand. “Where’s the Victoria that told me everything about the reputation that she had to keep for school? The one that I wish I fell for.” I said. Kylie knew what I meant and it didn’t bother her a single bit that I said those words. She knew that I was trying to make a point with Victoria.

“Chloe, I’m sorry I haven’t been a good big sister. I promise that we can do more bonding together. I’ll even take you out to buy new clothes for school. Can you forgive me?” Victoria asked. Chloe looked at me, then at her sister and nodded. She got up and went over to Victoria, giving her a hug.

“You’ve been good to her Liam. Thanks. I hope you and I can still be friends. If you decide against that, I understand.” she said after the two sisters pulled away from the hug. “Let’s start fresh. Hi, I’m Liam.” I smiled, holding out my hand towards her direction. Victoria smiled, “Victoria.”

“Nice to meet you. If you’re free, I’d like to hang out with you.” I told her.

“I’ll let you know and thanks again Liam. You’re lucky to have him Kylie.” she smiled, then turned her attention towards Kylie. “I hope that we can put our differences aside and hopefully become friends.”

“I agree.” Kylie smiled. With that, Victoria and Chloe walked back over to their parents as we went back to our friends. “You made a pact with the bitch." Julian said.

"She's not a bitch." I said as Kylie and I sat back down in our spots. "She's just a girl with a reputation to keep, just like us."

"Never knew that she was a nice girl after all." Kim said.

"She's beautiful." Niall said as Michaela slapped him on the arm. "Ow." He rubbed his arm, looking at her. I glanced back over at Victoria and her family who were now about to leave the beach. Victoria waved a good bye to us as I waved back. It was good that some people with a nasty attitude can be changed... eventually.
