1. Mea Culpa

Minie ran towards the temple of the sibyls for she had news of great importance to tell, she entered and collapsed at The Grand Sibyls feet. “Oh great sibyl I have foreseen a vision of great destruction upon our land”. The Grand Sibyl snickered at this remark.

“Silly child for I, the great sibyl of masterful amount of beauty and pride would have predicted such great devastation upon us many a year before it come. For you, a mere ugly duckling upon your kind should know only sibyls of great beauty and wisdom can make true predictions and have faithful premonitions. But just so I can laugh at your stupidity tell me what you have foreseen child”. Minie brushed the dirt off the knees of her homemade pants and caught her breath before she spoke “The legend of the jewel that is the Phoenix Heart is the cause of the future destruction of our land. For I fear it is not a legend and someone is misusing it”.

The sibyl shuddered as a drip of sweat fell from her youthful brow “……Absurd for…um …everybody knows that…um it is only of legend and nothing more…n now away with you child”.

Minie could easily tell The Grand Sibyl was hiding something but without hesitation she left knowing that if she hadn’t she would have her food supply cut. When Minie arrived home she thought about the legends and tales she had once heard.  The Phoenix Heart was meant to grant the user eternal youth and beauty. Other stories once said there was a powerful phoenix in the land and many grew jealous of its beauty and knew the only way to destroy it was to take out its heart, for if the heart was not taken out the phoenix would simply regenerate from its ashes.

The very next day Minie decided not to return to The Grand Sybil for further reasoning and questioning for she knew of other people just as wise in her land. One of these wise people was the Grand Master Tenach, who was young in age but as wise as the elders in mind. He was said to have taught many of the greats before he was at the age of eleven. He lived in one of the western style houses and many times he had left for America to visit family. Tenach did not live far from the village but the sibyls restricted him coming any closer for it was their land.

It was a matter of minutes before Minie arrived at Tenach’s house; it was clean cut with many windows and ornaments something a young man in his twenties like Tenach would have. Minie lurched forward to ring the bell but just before she could, Tenach opened the door, and lent against the doorway and gave a friendly smile “I’ve been expecting you”. Minie gave a confused but awkward look, for she knew he was wise but could not take him seriously because of the way he was dressed, he was wearing blue stone washed jeans, a plain tee and some sort of bed hair. Minie thought someone of such great wisdom would at least wear respectable clothing.

“What do you mean you’ve been expecting me?” Tenach laughed under his breath, “I dunno, just knew you were coming, so what did you come here for”.

Minie rubbed her sweaty palms on her trousers, and then spoke. “I came here to learn about the phoenix heart”. Tenach stumbled backward in shock and tripped over his newly polished coffee table and landed with a thud. “I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to frighten you”. Minie could feel tears building behind her eyes; she didn’t mean to frighten him to such extent.

“No, no it’s not your fault; it was just one of some things that no wisdom can predict. But why do you want to learn about …it”

Minie could tell this was an uncomfortable subject for Tenach, but answered anyway “I’ve had a vision, and the phoenix heart was the centre cause of future destruction.”, Minie’s hands began to sweat, “When I asked The Grand Sybil she didn’t say a word except go away, …so I have come to you, but really I don’t know what I want to learn, maybe the location if you could.”.

Tenach still shaken from the shock of earlier nodded his head slowly. “Walk this way”, Tenach lead Minie through a curtained doorway and entered a room filled with ancient books, perfumes and in the centre some stones and crystals.

Tenach walked in soon after Minie, and seemed to have transformed out of his casuals and into a fine suit and robes. “I will use the technique of the ancients to find the phoe…it, now please if you may walk to the centre of the room and sit”. Minie did as she was told and sat in the centre near the stones and crystals, soon so did Tenach. He picked up the stones and crystals, and sorted them into a pattern. Minie had noticed he hadn’t said much since they entered the room but did not disturb him in case his silence was intentional.
