7. Chapter 6

"Okay," I said. "Hold still. Just one more second."

Camryn stomped her feet as I buttoned the last button on her jacket. I gave her a look then handed her a hat, which she took from me while sticking her tongue out.

"Come on Cammy," I sighed. "Why haven't you been cooperating lately? You usually love dinner at Greg's."

"I don't wanna go!" she yelled and ran away. I groaned extra loudly, and started to go after her, but before I could there was a knock on the door.

"Camryn! Get back here right now! He's here!" I called out. Sure enough, Camryn came running back, heading towards the door. She opened it, and almost started to cry. She turned back to me with an angry face.

"You lied! Liar!" she screamed.

I rolled my eyes. "Sorry, sir."

Greg smiled. "No, no. It's okay."

I lightly grabbed Camryn by the shoulders. "She's just having a tough time today, aren't you sweetie?" I bent down to her ear and whispered, "Be on your best behavior."

When I stood up again, Greg was still smiling. "Really, it's okay. I understand. Carson was having a hard time today, so if you hear him crying in his room, he's still in time out."

"Right." I nodded. "Should we go?"

Greg opened his mouth to speak but Camryn interrupted him. She pointed at me and looked up at Greg. "Mommy lied!"

That was when I'd had enough. I put my hands on Camryn's back and ushered her out of the house. Greg followed and kindly shut the door behind us. We all piled into his car and were on our way to his house, finally. I kept my eyes on Camryn during the ride, who had her arms crossed and was staring out the window.

I sighed. Well, this dinner was going to suck.

When we got there, I gladly got out of the car to avoid an awkward situation with my boss and quickly took Camryn out as well. She immediately ran to the front door. I followed, with Greg behind us, yet again.

"I'm really sorry about her," I tell Greg as we walk to the front door. He shakes his head with a smile and opens the door for Camryn. She runs in as fast as she can.

"Honestly, it's okay." he said.

I nodded. I always hated when Camryn acted that way around other people. It bothered me a lot.

But it absolutely could not compare to what was in front of me right now.

My heart sank as I looked at Camryn. She made a quiet squealing noise in the back of her throat as she ran up to Justin and wrapped her tiny arms around his legs. He looked down at her, momentarily confused.

I almost pulled my hair out. "Camryn." I snapped. "Come here."

She ignored me. I groaned.

Justin looked up at me. And smirked. "Problem, Kat?"

I glared at him. "Camryn, I bet you want to play with Chloe, right?"

"No." she mumbled. "I like Justy."

I angrily clutched my jacket in my hand after I'd taken it off. Justin noticed how angry I was getting at this point, so he gently pushed Camryn off and squatted down. He whispered something to her, she hugged him again, and ran off. I sighed.

"Great. Glad to know that there won't be any tension between you two tonight," Greg said, hinting. He raised an eyebrow at me as if to say: fix this.

I gave him a curt nod, then turned around and hung my jacket up.

Justin cleared his throat. "So, how's it goin?"

I turned and shot him a glare. "How's it goin? Everything's wonderful, Justin."

"Awesome," he smirked. "Glad to know you're doing alright."

I continued to glare at him.

"I don't know about you," he said. "But I'm seriously so starving I could die right now."

"Please, do." I said sarcastically and rolled my eyes, causing Justin to laugh.

I crossed my arms and there was a moment of awkward silence between us, until Chloe, Carson, and Camryn all ran by us, practically running us over. I made a sound of annoyance in the back of my throat and Justin gave me a look.

"Something wrong?"

"Oh," I mumbled. "Now you care."

Justin raised an eyebrow. "Seriously, what's bothering you?"

I looked at him for a moment. Maybe he actually cared. But at the same time, maybe he was just pretending to care just to get closer to Camryn. I decided to answer him by saying, "Nothing", then I walked past him into the kitchen.

Sadly, dinner was already done.

So, I helped Greg's wife bring food to the table, and I called everyone into the dining room, making sure that when Justin walked in I didn't make eye contact. He was talking to Greg, anyway, so I was good for the moment.

Once everyone was there and seated, my boss decided to make conversation.

"Everyone enjoying themselves?" he stared straight at me.

That was when I broke. Everything inside of me seemed to fall apart because I was so exhausted.

"You know, I'm actually feeling kind of tired," I said firmly and started to get up, even though I had just sat down. "I think it would be best if I left. You know, to get some rest."

Greg eyed me suspiciously as I glared at Justin. "Are you sure?"

"Absolutely positive." I answered through clenched teeth.

"Katrina, I'm not really fond of your behavior tonight. You can go home, but we're going to talk when you come to work tomorrow." he said.

I paused. "I don't have work tomorrow."

"Now you do."

I inwardly groaned and ran a hand over my face. Why do I always have to make things so complicated? "Okay. Well, thanks for inviting me over. Um..I don't want to push my welcome any further, but do you mind if Camryn stays the night? I can bring her stuff."

Greg sighed, knowing that I was going through a hard time with Justin here and I just wanted to be alone for one night. "Yes, that's fine."

"Thank you sir." I made sure that I thanked his wife, too, before I left. Then, I told Camryn that she could sleep over and that I'd be right back with her stuff.

I said goodbye one more time and when I'd gotten to my car, I sighed with relief. Thank god, I was away from Justin.

Sadly, when I had finally gotten home, and when I had finally changed and sat down in the quiet with nobody to worry about except myself, the silence didn't last long.
