21. Chapter 20

I sat down on the couch and took out my phone. I wished a million times that his number was still in my contacts, because if it wasn't, I was screwed.

After typing in 'J' I was relieved to find that I hadn't deleted his number.

But the thing was, did I really want to do this? The letter said that it was for the best. He left for a good reason, though I still wasn't happy with it. Would he understand if I called him? Would it upset him?

With too many scenarios running through my head, I set the phone down next to me. I should really think this through.

Then again, I was desperate. And Justin said a long time ago that he regretted not being there for me and Cam. So why wouldn't be be here now?

I stared intently at my phone, then, as a last minute decision, I picked it up and dialed Justin. It only took a moment for him to pick up.

"Kat.." he sounded more sad than disappointed, which was a start.

"I can explain. I have a good explanation for this. I promise. Please, just let me talk." I rushed.

Justin laughed quietly. "Calm down, I'm not mad. Just...what do you need?"

My heart was beating fast, and my mind was moving at the same pace. How do I word all of this? "Well, you can probably guess one of the reasons I called."

"You shouldn't have."

"I know, but..." I paused, then lowered my voice to a whisper. "Why did you leave?"

There was a long moment of silence, then he sighed.

"I already told you. I'm not well enough to be around you two. Mentally or physically. It's too much and I don't want to overwhelm you." he said.

I laughed at that remark. "Trust me, I'm already overwhelmed Justin. I just need to you to come back and then everything will be fine."

"What's that supposed to mean?" he asked, sounding suspicious. When I didn't answer, he kept pushing the subject. "Kat. Tell me now."

I tapped my fingers nervously on my leg. "Well..."

"Spit it out, Katrina."

"I-I'm..." I cleared my throat. "Justin, I'm pregnant."

He sounded like he was going to respond, but nothing came out. I took a deep breath and tried not to spill tears. I shouldn't cry if he rejects me again. He'll probably reject me again. Second baby I'll have to take care of on my own.

"I'm sorry." I finally said. "I shouldn't have called--"

I was about to hang up, end it all, but he stopped me. "Wait, Kat. You know how I feel about this."

"Obviously I don't because you left me and Camryn with a note saying that you didn't think we wanted you around because of what you're going through, though you said you loved us at the same time. You seem to have mixed feelings about everything." I spat.

"I guess I can't fix that, now can I?" he sighed. "I can't believe this. The second time I let you down, you just happen to be pregnant."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

There was a pause. "It means I'm coming back. Because I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I left you alone like that again."

I felt a tiny smile form on my lips. "So is this out of pity or...?"

"I still don't think I should be with you guys, Kat. I'm not good enough for you and I'll just bring you, Cam, and the new baby down. But this is not out of pity for you at all."

"Hey," I said softly. "You're good enough, Justin. In fact, you're better than good enough for me. I need you. Camryn needs you. The new baby needs you, and if you come home I think we can all work through our problems together. What do you think?"

I heard a car door slam on his side of the line. "See you soon, Kat."

After hanging up, I could feel a smile spreading across my face. I felt safe knowing that I wouldn't have to raise two kids alone and I was happy he was coming back. He didn't understand how much we needed him. I didn't think it was going to be that easy for him to come back. I thought he wasn't going to even answer let alone agree without putting much of a fight. And I was grateful for that.

Around an hour later I hear a car turn off and then a door slam. I started to get anxious. I started to shake and bite my nails waiting for him to come in.

Was he going to look different?

What was his attitude going to be when he came in?

Will he want to talk about everything?

All these questions were running through my head as I heard keys jiggling into the lock then the door creak open. It slammed shut and heavy footsteps started to get louder as they came closer.

"Kat?" I heard his voice finally. I couldn't help but feel the pang in my heart and tears well up in my eyes. I couldn't say anything because then I knew I would start to sob. So I just looked down at my shoes hoping it would help. But not long after I saw white shoes stop before mine but I didn't dare look up yet.

I heard him sigh then sit next to me on the couch. So close his knee brushes against mine making my stomach go crazy. Then I felt his big soft hand brush my back before he started to gently rub it. And at that point I broke down. I started to sob. I was so overwhelmed with emotions my body didn't know what else to do.

"Kat, baby." He whispered before wrapping his arms around me bring my head to his chest.

"I'm so scared." I finally got out.

"Shhh, it'll all be alright I promise." He said soothingly tightening his grip around me and placing a wet kiss on my temple.
