Convergent (Winner of the Divergent Competition)

*One of three winners of the Divergent fanfiction contest* Lilith was never meant for Candor. The faction of truth has no place for a girl like her. So when she transfers to Erudite - the intelligence faction - at the choosing ceremony, the lack of surprise is evident. But when a mysterious cat leads her out into the city, will she discover that she made the wrong choice? And who is the strange boy in black?

7. The Serum

I visit Nixon every evening and he either takes me somewhere insane (yet strangely fun) or throws a party and introduces me to his Dauntless friends.
Soon, initiation is over, and I am named a full member of Erudite, just, my scores being some of the lowest in the class.
To celebrate gaining not only an identity, but a new apartment, me and Nixon spend the night together at his shack.
"So, Erudite, how does it feel to be in a faction?" Nixon asks mockingly.
"Fabulous, mainly because I don't have to do those hideously dull experiments and essays!" I've been assigned a Math job, which I am scheduled to start in a month.
"Was it really that bad?" He laughs.
"It sucked! At one point they made us test and improve a kind of mind control simulation drug that they intend to use to calm the mentally ill. It made me feel really uncomfortable..." I confess.
"Speaking of simulations, I took the final initiation test today; first years always do in the morning before the initiates." He explains. "I beat my fifth fear in record time!"
I hug him and give him a quick kiss.
"I'm gunna make sure that, next year, that fear doesn't even exist." I whisper.
"Thank you, Lilith." He presses his forehead to mine. After a moment or so of silence, I speak.
"So what made you so late today?" I quiz. He worried me earlier by turning up far later than usual.
"They kept us behind after we watched the initiation to inject us with this weird, orange tracker serum. In case we run off." I shudder at the thought. Orange serum, the same as the mind control drug.
"I worried so much." I admit.
"Don't worry; I'll always come back for you, Lil." He whispers.
Suddenly, I remember. The rumours passed around the initiates that the orange serum was planned for a war. The newspaper articles where Dauntless and Erudite slam Abnegation. Abnegation having main control of the city due to their selflessness. No. I'm looking too much into this. This can't be right. Erudite wouldn't do this.
"Lilith! Helloooo?" Nixon calls, waving his hands. He looks nervous.
"Yeah, sorry." I mumble.
"Did you hear what I said?" His nerves become even more evident.
I shake my head. "Sorry. Daydreaming."
"I said," He takes a deep breath. "Lilith, I lo-"
He suddenly bolts upright and his eyes become void of emotion. No! No! Please don't say I was right!
"Nixon?" I say weakly, before standing, putting my hands on his shoulders and shouting at him. "Nixon! Wake up!" His vacant eyes stare straight through me. I begin to sob. "Nixon, please! Please, wake up, Dauntless boy!" My voice falls to a whisper. "I love you."
He stands, pushing me to the ground and marches from the shack into the darkness of the city alleys, leaving me sobbing on the floor.
They've got him.
