The machines were beeping in my ear as I waited for him to come to. I hated the Chemo treatments. The Doctors were trying everything in their power and the power of science and miracles to save his life when they saw us for the first time.

A Few Months earlier:

We were in the living room, we had just finished Christmas dinner. We were sipping eggnog and cocoa and telling funny stories about previous Christmases. The laughter was interrupted by a sound from the bathroom. I looked around Chuck wasn't in the living room with the rest of us. The symptoms of his disease started back in October, it started with heat flashes, then the weight loss, now its the itching and vomiting. A single tear escaped the corner of my eye. I wiped it away before anyone could notice, I smiled when I heard him coming cuing everyone to start talking again. I looked up at him as he sat down, I handed back his mug of eggnog, that's when I noticed the rash on his arms. He always told me when he had new symptoms, maybe it just slipped his mind, which is another symptom, memory loss. Nobody noticed me lost in the world my fiance would soon leave behind his Follicular Lymphoma deciding to finally take him from me.

Some months later yet another symptom emerged, his was going fast and I couldn't stop it. The doctors said they were close to a cure but, Chuck wouldn't make it until then unless he started radiation and chemo, he hates those treatments but he also doesn't want to leave me. I haven't been happy since before I knew Chuck had this disease. But that changed one brisk, cold March morning when I felt a twinge in my stomach, I had morning sickness. I've never experienced morning sickness before but mom said its related mostly to the time of the month, ovulation periods, and pregnancy. I hoped for the third that way I would have a piece of Chuck with me when he left me in the end.

I went for a walk to the drug store and bought the test and the clerk kindly let me use the employee bathroom. I waited for the time described on the back and I gasped in delight, I was pregnant. I couldn't wait to tell Chuck. Then I started to cry because Chuck would never see this baby born. Or see me start to show. Maybe I shouldn't tell him? NO! I yelled at myself Chuck may be dying but he deserves to know he's a father. Whether he gets sad or cries or gets mad at himself he deserves to know. I got up off the toilet and thanked the clerk on the way out mouthing the word 'positive' at him. He was extremely gay by the way and he smiled and gave me a double thumbs up. I smiled and left the store. On the way home I passed the park, it was filled with father's on their day off with their kids. I cried a little knowing that my future child would only know his/her father by a memory I fed to him/her. I quickly resumed my brisk pace to get out of the cold, it wasn't good for the baby. When I arrived home at last Chuck was laying on the couch his mother and father sitting on the coffee table, no doubt trying to get him to end his suffering and stop this treatment. I was only a girl. they said.

"Chuck I have some news and I don't know how exactly you'll take it." he sat up and looked at me then his parents.

"You cheated on me?"

"What? NO its uh good news well to me. I'm pregnant." the air was so tense I could cut it with a knife. No one spoke for a long time, I noticed that my mother was in the door way, Chuck's jello lunch in hand. Her mouth slightly a gape and she looked like she wanted to strangle me and hug me at the same time. I also noticed my father was right behind me. Chuck was the first to speak. His words were slow, deliberate as if he was having trouble thinking just the right words to say.

"That's...well....um that's...That's BRILLIANT! OH Amelia, how far along are you?"

"I'm not sure." this time my mother spoke up,

"When was your last menstrual cycle?"

"Uh October 23rd about two weeks before Chuck and I um well you know."

"Yes we do know, your about November sixth to March 28th you are 5 months 3 weeks and one day along." Mrs. Taylor said.

"Chuck you'll be able to see the baby!"

"Darling we have to make you an ultrasound appointment for how about tomorrow? The sooner the better." mom got on the phone with her OB/GYN and after she hung up she wrote something on the calendar, then went over to me lifted my shirt and felt my stomach, I should mention my mom is a RNB(Registered Nurse with Bachelor) in the baby ward. She must've liked what she heard and felt because she smiled and showed me over to Chuck who she instructed how to proceed to feeling the baby kick. She told him to talk to the baby.

"My dear Amelia your appointment is for eight 'o' clock tomorrow morning, Chuck your coming correct?"

"Yes its my child in there.(he looked at me) do you want to know if its female or male tomorrow? So we can pick out a name."

"Yes, I'm dying to know...no offense." I blushed.

"No problem darling." he said.

The next day was the ultrasound and watching my baby on that screen was amazing and when the doctor asked if we wanted to know the gender we nodded our heads so fast we have the nickname 'Mr and Mrs Bobble head'.

"Its a girl." I yelped in delight and Chuck let out a whoop again. After the doctor's we started talking names. My mom gave me her copy of "Most popular Baby Girl names'"

"Hey how about Layla?" I asked him.

"No. Um what about something simple but lovable, and unique."

"I got it! Iva Natalia Taylor!"

"I love it." we sealed it with a kiss.

Present day:

Iva was kicking violently now, Chuck just wouldn't get up. I decided not to worry and I took a nap. When I woke up Chuck was holding my hand stroking it gently so I would wake. I opened my eyes looked around and saw the time, it was around four in the afternoon.

"Why didn't you wake me sooner?"

"Your cute when your sleeping." he smiled. The doctor came in and checked his vitals and told him to get dressed we could go home. I looked at my stomach and remembered that I only have a few more weeks left. I held tight onto Chuck's hand as we left the hospital that night. It was June 23rd I was due on July 2nd.  While we were driving Chuck grabbed my hand that was on the steering wheel, I looked at him from the road a question forming on my lips, before I could ask a blinding flash was coming through the window I looked up just in time to see the eighteen wheeler crash into the car in front of us, I stomped on the brake and came to a screeching stop.

Flames shot out from every corner of the semi and SUV. Oh my god there are people in those cars! I couldn't help but Chuck could, I turned to say something but he was gone, he was running to the crash! I got out of the car and begun screaming his name. A few minutes later he emerged from the wreckage with a small child. Chuck looked at me as if to say, he's all alone. He picked the little boy up and ran far from the crash to me. When he reached me the blast of the explosion was blinding, tears filled the boys eyes and he wailed for his mom and dad. I hugged him close to me while Chuck dialed 911, when the police, firemen/women, and paramedics arrived they asked us questions and checked the boy for and injuries sustained in the crash.

They loaded Kyle into the ambulance(that was the little boy's name) and tow trucks came and towed away the wreckage. The bodies of the driver and Kyle's parents were mangled, torched, and bloody. I was glad Kyle was safely put into the ambulance so he didn't have to see his parents this way. I asked the officer if the boy had any other family and did a background check on his iPad and said no, he'd be but into the system, I then asked if he could stay with us, we could be the foster parents until they found another that would be better fitted for him.

"That would amazing thank you. He'll be there tomorrow at four." I smiled to the officer and he walked away. When everyone had been questioned and given statements we were free to go. I told Chuck about Kyle coming to live with us for few weeks, he seemed excited finally we arrived home and I bandaged Chuck's burns. When I finished we went to tell the family, they were watching the news. I was on the screen. Telling my statement.

"......I was driving with my fiance and we were talking and I saw this blinding flash and I looked in time to see this semi come crashing into the car in front of us. Then my fiance went running into the crash and pulled the little boy out from the wreckage and called 911." then the screen went black. They turned and saw us there and they all looked nervous. My father and Chuck's father were turning purple they were furious, but why?

"DO YOU REALIZE CHUCK YOU CHOULD'VE DIED? THEN WHAT WOULD'VE AMELIA DO? WHERE YOU THINKING THAT SHE WAS ALREADY LOSING YOU, SO WHY NOT END EARLY?"

"That's not what happened, Mr.Taylor, I told Chuck to save the little boy. The boy will be staying with us for a few weeks. He just lost his parents to a gruesome death so please stop!" I stormed out of the room.
