7. Part 6

Adriana’s body is strapped to Christian’s old-fashioned wooden operating table with leather straps tied around her wrists and ankles. The Doctor is standing next to Christian looking fascinated and trying to hide his enjoyment at something new, whilst Jonathan is sitting in the corner, tears streaming down his face. Sami is holding his hand in both of hers. Christian takes a scalpel off of the table and begins to make an incision in Addy’s hand.

Christian:
 Doctor…

Doctor:
 She’s not bleeding.

Christian:
 There’s no blood. It’s simply… Not there.

Sami:
 That’s not possible!

Christian looks into the wound:
I can’t see anything in there. It’s pitch black.

Sami:
 What do you mean?

Christian grabs a surgical knife and makes a hole big enough to see into in Addy’s hand. He holds her hand up to show Sami what he means. Inside her hand, instead of there being organs and muscle and blood, there is just darkness.

Christian:
It’s like the inside of her body just disappeared.

Doctor:
Even I’ve never heard of that.

Christian puts down the knife and scalpel and walks over to Jonathan.

Christian:
I’m sorry Jonathan, but I don’t know what happened to Adriana. There’s nothing I can do. She’s dead.

Suddenly, on the table, Adriana turns her head and stares at Jonathan with her cold, empty eyes.

Sami, freaked out:
 What the hell?!

Christian:
 What is it?

Doctor, excited and intrigued:
 She moved!

The Doctor crouches down in front of Adriana and looks her in the face.
Who are you?

Christian:
 Doctor, what are you doing?

The Doctor ignores Christian.

Doctor:
 What’s your name?

Sami:
Doctor, she’s dead, she can’t talk.

Adriana struggles against the straps.

Doctor:
 She doesn’t LOOK dead.

Sami:
 Yes she does.

Doctor, annoyed:
Oh, you know what I mean.

Christian, incredulous:
 How can she be moving?

Doctor:
I don’t know! This is new, I’ve never met a moving dead person before! Well I have, but not a hollow one.

Sami:
You’ve no idea what it is?

Jonathan:
 It’s my sister!

The Doctor’s face becomes instantly solemn.

Doctor:
I’m sorry Jonathan, but Adriana is dead. I don’t know what this is,

The Doctor signals towards Adriana
 but it’s not your sister.

Jonathan:
 What are you talking about?

Christian:
I’m sorry Jonathan, but I have to agree with The Doctor. Your sister is dead.

Jonathan, angry:
Well then explain to me what happened to her!

Doctor:
 She went into the forest.

Christian and Jonathan:
 What?

Doctor:
It’s the only explanation. Whatever is in the forest, taking people… It’s reaching out.

Sami:
Are you saying what I think you’re saying, Doctor?

The Doctor stands up and looks at Sami solemnly.

Doctor:
I should never have brought you here. I’ve put you in danger, and I promised the Brigadier I’d bring you back alive.

Sami, increasingly scared:
Doctor, what are you talking about?

Doctor, ignoring Sami:
I am not losing another one!

Looking to the sky and shouting
NO-ONE ELSE IS GOING TO DIE!!!

Sami, standing up and shouting:
 DOCTOR, WHAT IS GOING ON?!

Doctor:
 I’m not quite sure.

Sami:
Then what are you getting so worked up about?

Doctor:
Wherever I go, people die. Trouble follows me wherever I go.

Christian:
Doctor, what are you talking about?

Doctor:
I travel around, and wherever I go, death and destruction follow me, no matter how much I try to stop it.

Jonathan:
 Doctor…

Doctor, ignoring Jonathan:
And I cannot take it any more!

Jonathan, interrupting:
 Doctor!

The Doctor turns to look at Jonathan.

Jonathan:
I’ve spent enough time with you to realize something.

Doctor:
 Yes?

Jonathan:
Elijah was right. You are older and have seen much more than we could even imagine. But death and destruction, they don’t follow you. They follow evil people, and you are not evil. You’re trying to HELP us.

Sami:
He’s right. Doctor, I’ve read your file. Death and destruction don’t follow you. You arrive at the same time. You stop it getting any worse than it could be. The Sontarans, the Daleks, the Cybermen… They killed us, and you killed them. But if you hadn’t, it would have been much worse. Everyone would have died.

Sami laughs softly.
You don’t bring disaster on us, you save us from it!

There is silence as The Doctor processes what Sami has said.

Sami:
So Doctor, please. Stop this getting any worse. I’ll help.

Jonathan:
 Me too.

Christian:
 And me.

Doctor:
Let’s go then! Christian, I need you to see if anything develops. Sami, stay with Jonathan. I need to go check out the mine again.

Christian:
Doctor, I’m afraid that isn’t likely to happen.

Doctor:
 Why not?

Jonathan:
Well, first of all, The Council aren’t likely to let you anywhere near the mine again in a long while. And secondly, the sun is going down.

Doctor:
What happens when the sun goes down?

Sami:
 We sleep.

Doctor:
 Oh. Right. Yes.

Awkward silence.
Well, we need somewhere to keep Adriana overnight. Somewhere she can’t break out of and do any damage. Because until we find out what she wants, we need to keep everyone else safe. Christian, do you have anywhere like that?

Christian nods.

Christian:
I could put her in the jail overnight?

Jonathan:
You’re not putting her in jail!

Sami, softly:
It’s for the best. We don’t know what she wants, she could be here to kill everyone.

Jonathan, shouting angrily:
 BUT SHE’S MY SISTER!

Sami:
Jonathan, whatever this is, it is not your sister! I’m sorry, but you have to accept that!

Jonathan:
She’s Adriana, my sister, she’s 15 years old, she-

Jonathan is cut short as Sami pulls him down to her level and kisses him on the lips. Christian’s eyes widen, and The Doctor looks at them as if he’s never seen anyone kiss.

Sami, begging:
 Jonathan, please.

Jonathan doesn’t reply. Tears stream down his face.

Doctor:
Okay, Christian take Adriana to the cells, and Sami…

Sami:
Doctor, I’m going to stay with Jonathan tonight.

Sami mutters to The Doctor.
 He needs someone right now.

Doctor:
 Oh. Ok. Right.

Sami:
Doctor, even you need people when you’re sad. Everyone does.

Doctor:
Go with him. Check with me in the morning. I need to do some thinking.

Sami nods and walks out of the room, hand in hand with Jonathan.

Doctor:
 Oh.

Sami wakes up in the middle of the night, and sees that the bed next to her is empty.

Sami:
 Jonathan?

No-one replies, so Sami strikes a match and lights a lantern, getting out of bed and making her way out of the room.

Sami stumbles across Jonathan in the jail, sitting in front of Adriana’s cell. Inside the cell, Adriana simply stands there, completely still.

Sami:
I thought I’d find you here.

Jonathan turns, but doesn’t say anything. Sami sits beside him and sighs.

Sami:
 Jonathan, this isn’t Adriana.

Jonathan:
 I know.

Sami:
 Then why are you here?

Jonathan:
She was the only family I had left. I can’t just let her go.

Sami:
You have to. You saw inside her, there’s nothing left of your sister. This is just a shell.

Jonathan:
 Then how can she move?

Sami:
I don’t know, but it’s a big universe. Anything is possible.

Jonatha, bemused:
What are you talking about? How do you know? You’re not from another planet.

Sami:
 I’m from the future.

Jonathan:
Spacetrains is believable. But the future? That’s not possible.

Sami reaches into her jacket pocket and pulls out a pocket sized laser gun, the size of a water pistol.

Jonathan:
 What’s that?

Sami:
 It’s a gun.

Jonathan:
 But it’s so small!

Sami:
 It doesn’t fire bullets.

Sami fires the gun, and a blue laser shoots out of it and blasts the wall. Jonathan jumps back in surprise and fear.

Jonathan:
 What is that?!

Sami:
I come from the future, and I’ve seen aliens from other planets, and aliens from Earth. Most of them want to kill us. We use these to protect ourselves. So whatever it is that has taken over your sister…

Sami gestures to Adriana.
Well, chances are it’s not going to let her go. So you have to. I’m sorry, I know it’s hard, but she’s not coming back.

Jonathan’s face falls.

Jonathan:
 I know.

Sami:
Come on. Let’s go back to sleep. I have a feeling that we’re going to need our sleep tomorrow.

She leans down and kisses Jonathan.

Jonathan smiles a sad smile and follows Sami out of the jail, taking one last look at his sister, who is standing still in the same position as before, her head tilted to one side, staring at Jonathan with a dead, hollow stare.
